Worry

Worry. How do you define it? My dad defines worry as: worry is like 'a man carrying a basket of feathers on his head ...and his head is bent.Worry is just nothing. Be anxious for nothing.

One of our associate pastors gave a message on emotions. He said God gave us emotions because He has emotions. But our sinful nature can distort them. Jealousy/obsession is the sinful side of love, rage is the sinful side of anger and worry is the sinful side of concern.

Worry, in the form of anxiety, is still a concern for me. However, God has changed me from a Valium-popping worrier into a somewhat troubled Christian man.

I think worry, for me at least, is related to 2 things: 1) power and 2) lack of faith. Power because you worry when you can't control a situation (at least, I do). Lack of faith because its true...faith eliminates fear, worry, anxiety, all that. Of course, none of us have perfect faith, we live in a fallen world, etc. etc., so worry is probably still a problem for most Christians, no matter how steadfast.

My counselor--a Christian himself--gave me solid advice. In your intense moments (right now, this would be WRATH for me), pray. I imagine you can do it silently. I can't focus my thoughts enough to pray silently, personally. Anyway, you pray and you offer it up to God and ask Him to help you do what He has called for you to do.

Brilliant, CE. :thumbsup

If we worry or become anxious are we really trusting God?

Philippians 4:6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Luke 12:22Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.
23Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
24Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifeb?
26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27“Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
28If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!
29And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
30For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.
31But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

1 Peter 5:7Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.

Psalm 55:22Cast thy care upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall not suffer the just to waver for ever

I used to worry a lot. Now I pray a lot. As we realize how great God's LOVE is for us as well is for other people we are concerned about, and we realize how powerful He is, we come to comprehend that He is best equipped to handle the situation. So we are able to pray and entrust it to His hands. Then we can praise Him for His great love and power. We can thank Him for the outcome even if it is not what we hope for because we can trust Him to do what is best. Thanksgiving and praise are more important for us than for Him. It helps to lift us above the circimstances.

The other important thing to do is to retrain ourselves to dwell on the positivel We are still aware of the negative, but we focus on the positive. Let the world say we are looking through rose colored glasses! They are blues blockers.

Philippians 4:4-5,7-8 NKJV Rejoice in the Lord alwaysl Again I say, rejoice! Let your forbearance be known to all men The Lord is at hand. (He is standing by, eager and waiting to help when we ask. But He is not our servent. We are His children. Carolyn's version)

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethern, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy---meditate on these things.

Very good!

Worry, to me, is dwelling (thinking) on something too much, especially something you do not have any power over.

It is these things that we are to leave at God's feet and relenquish control.

They say most things people worry about will never happen. And like you mentioned things they can't do anything about it anyway, so why waste time and energy on worry? It won't change a thing, except maybe change you for the worst. Mentally, physically.

But praying in faith changes things :D
