What does the Bible say about retirement? ;)

That's a good question. A literal plan should be implemented for retirement. When we need wisdom for planning, many times, we find ourselves in the book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 13:22
22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.../
(Any retirement plan must include something extra to pass down to the kids/family.)

Proverbs 21:
20 There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.../
(this translates to me as, have some cash on hand, save some at home, don't spend it all.) (towards retirement)

Proverbs 15:22
22 Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.../
(You hardly ever see a successful businessman on the news or whatever, alone. They're always got a few guys with them...Advisors)

So, Proverbs indicates that retirement includes having something to pass down to family, (Not only that, but a prophecy about a wealth transfer in the last days from the wicked to the righteous.) The other scripture seems to advise us to save. Don't live paycheck to paycheck and spend it all up. Put some back that you don't get into. Even 10 bucks a week or whatever. Something.

There's also Proverbs 13:4, Proverbs10:22, Proverbs 28:19, Proverbs 22:9...all speak to financial planning. Jesus gives us some financial advise in Matthew 6:19-21. That tells me, don't keep all my eggs in the same basket, and to actually be mindful of retirement includes some planning towards...(wait for it)...after Jesus comes and it's all over and we go to heaven. He said He went to prepare a place for us. For me, for you. They're probably putting the finishing touches on our new houses. Some will be mansions! We'll be living there. Think eternal, plan for it. Lay up some treasures in heaven and include that in the retirement plan.

How do we lay up treasures in heaven? It's simple. I don't the reference handy, but it says, by doing good works. Helping people. It's as simple as that. Among other ways too, but that's the foundation of it.

What bites for me, is that here I am, 55 years old and I didn't plan for retirement. Was married for 26 years and was self employed. We went through so much cash without setting anything aside that it's embarrassing. On the plus side, I learned how to live on nothing through the slow times. (being self employed is either feast or famine). On the down side, I broke my back in two places in an auto accident. That took a lot of wind out of my sails. and I still need a plan. Because all of this is still before me.

That wealth transfer that is spoken of in scripture, for the last days...I hadn't really heard of that before. But I've heard it mentioned a couple times now I presume it's something real which is going to take place in the last days. I'm not sure yet, when it's to happen though. Is that millennial reign talk? Or could it be pre-trib? Anyone know?

My heart says yes cuz I could then afford good medical care and other things like my mom wanting to start a homeless shelter since there isn't one in our area, but logic says I would also end up buying a lot of material things like video games and I have enough issues with being overly material and obsessive already. If there was an opportunity, I would take it because of the good I could do, but spiritually it may be dangerous.

I don't believe that. That was a good direct answer you gave to WIP. IDK, maybe it's rhetorical to you and perhaps God used you to write it for His purpose. Scripture does speak of retirement. It might not say that word, but when you take the wisdom provided and apply it to life application, then it does.

What are you saying? That WIP should not look to the bible for advice in this area?

After the Gov gets it's 1/3 & then all the new friends/relatives I haven't seen in years shows up with their hands out, & our 4 kids either currenttly in college or other expenses like weddings, might not be much left so would need more moola $$$

That's how I feel. I'm not money driven and have no big ambition to be rich or anything, but if I were to become a millionaire, I may just be a philanthropist and try to give most of it away. The way scripture describes helping the poor and needy, and that if we give a stranger a glass of water that it's just like giving it to the Lord Himself...it makes me think that, that's the way we're supposed to be to everyone.

If someone asks you to go a mile with them, then go two with them, and so forth...that, that's how it's supposed to work. This is how we build up our treasures in heaven. When God blesses us, then we are to take that and bless others with it. Freely we have been given, so freely give.
Scripture describes a river of life flowing through us...so when we get blessed...pay it forward and bless others. We don't receive blessings and then hold on to them like a reservoir, but to give it away so there is a flow rather than a pond. Does that make sense?
