I'm switching Bible versions,

I've decided to switch to ESV for two reasons. I have beautiful black covered ESV Bible in that I own. Also, I think KJV is too poetry like with words, too complex. The Word of God was written to be simple in understanding. Has anybody switched versions in their lifetime, if so why. Is there any favorite scriptures you would like to share too. This has always been one of my fav's, now with ESV..John 14:18 I will not leave you as orphans; <SUP class=crossreference value='(A)'></SUP>I will come to you.

I switched from NIV to NASB, though there was a time I used NKJV because I liked the language, which was a little easier to understand than KJV. The reason I put NIV away was because of the inordinate amount of assumptions and errors in translation. NASB, I have found, is quite a bit more accurate.

BTW, I have used esword in the past, which is software where you can download many different versions of the bible and compare them side by side. There are other awesome tools included, but the biggest benefit is being able to compare versions.

I had read and studied with the KJV for years and do find that other versions are easier to understand. I'm still having trouble because when I can't remember where a scripture is exacting I can't just go to where I know it is physically. I have to go to my KJV with handwritten notes, etc. It's funny, I remember John 16 is on the right hand page, right hand column, about half way down, and color coded green, etc.

But now I use mostly ASB and sometimes the NIV. They are easier to read. I still read Psalms in the KJV.

Hi K, the NASB is in the line of the old ASV; the NKJV is nearer to the KIng James minus some of the archaisms.

I'm fine with the King James myself, but I guess I would go with the NKJV otherwise.

Hehe, I can feel your pain. For non native English speakers King James verses are nigh impossible to understand.

I never "switched versions" because I've always been using different versions. There are very literal German translations like the Elberfelder Bible, and paraphrasing ones like Hoffnung für Alle (Hope for everyone) and of course Luther's translation for traditional and poetic wordings. I think many christians use various Bible versions parallel. There's no "This translation only" doctrine among German speaking christians.
My favourite Bible version at the moment is the English "The Message". It's strongly paraphrased and modernised, and thus very alive and "fiery", and at the moment it's inspiring me more than the "traditional" translations.

I agree sometimes it's hard to understand the KING JAMES VERSION but I stick with it anyway.. the reason I stick with it is because the KJV is the one which is the closest word for word translation to the original Greek & Hebrew scripture. I want to get the exact same message from the Word as was given to the saints in biblical times.
To me, the other versions are just other people's opinions of what the KJV is saying. I don't want to read man's opinion, I want to glean from God's word as it was meant to be read.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying the other versions aren't somewhat helpful, I'm sure they are... except for the NIV. The NIV has deleted too many important scriptures from the bible. The NIV is also published by the same publicists as the satanic bible! something smells funny there.. *plugs nose. lol

It's pretty poetic, and most of those Bible verses that are frequently recited in church (like The Lord's Prayer or Psalm 23) are usually quoted in Martin Luther's version.

To me, the other versions are just other people's opinions of what the KJV is saying. I don't want to read man's opinion, I want to glean from God's word as it was meant to be read.

I don't think it's other people's opinion's per say, but at the same time it is. The Bible was written by 'people' who were indwelled with the Holy Spirit. Rather it's 'people' who twist the Word of God to fit their lifestyle or beliefs, but there is only one God speaking through us. That's why we should stay close to the Holy Spirit when discerning truth. Blessings.

I always used the KJV myself, that was until it fell apart on me from that point my beautiful lady went out and bought me a gorgeous NKJV and I love it..

Now I'm very HUGE fan of "The Word of Promise" NKJV audio Bible. I'm a truck driver and I always have one of the many CD's in my player. This week I went through the entire New Testament. It is AWESOME because it has sound effects and different actors and actresses. So the Bible comes alive and it helps you understand it A LOT more!

Never could relate to those who had a hard time with the "thus, thy's, etc." language. I started reading the KJV at the same time I started attending Church, and haven't had too much of a problem with it. Of course, the Church was (and still is) highly centered on understanding and teaching the Word, so that could be a reason I haven't had a problem.... Don't know...

I'm not criticizing anyone who switches from the KJV... Just stating my experiences with it.

If you read the King James you might want to consider keeping it, I've never used another version, oh I've looked at some of them but i like the poetry in the King James as well as the authenticity...

while im kjvp type. I don't like the septuagiant lxx nor the niv. I call the former the niv of the old testament.i understand why you say that but come time to study the Word deeply then you will see that you have to go to a fe. thanks free.

The ESV is one of the best translations out there. It is a formal equivalence, "word-for-word," translation that is easy to read. The KJV is a good version but is dated in that much more manuscript evidence has been found since it was written.

Maybe you have the poetics ear. It is very pretty, sometimes I have trouble with certain words that are not used anymore but a good concordance can cure that.
Certainly if you are in a good teaching church that too is a help.

OH I have this too. I LOVE it. Listening to the OT while doing (brainless) chores.
It is so well done and some of the actors are Christians and talk about it on the DVD that comes with it. I kind of wish they hadn't shown how they did some of the sound effects, kind of took away from my visuals.

Ty for this post Free. I'm a writer, I've been writing poetry for 12 years and songs for the past 6 years and even the KJV is at times complex to me. I find the ESV simple and fun to read. For me it is simplicity in Christ. Blessings.
