2 witness

Then pay close attention to this Scripture:
And they asked him [John the Baptist], What then? Art thou Elias [Elijah]? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet [Christ]? And he answered, No. (John 1:21)

Matthew 11:13-14

It is most likely that the 2 witnesses will be ordinary humans on the earth today who have learned to put Jesus first in everything. Perhaps they will have the spirit of Moses or Elijah and not even realize it. Their lack of recognition or knowledge of their own greatness is exactly the kind of humility that will make them qualified to handle the kind of power God will give to them.

Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, Genesis 18:1-2

Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”
Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom,
but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Genesis 18:16-22

The two “men” went on to Sodom, but the Lord stayed with Abraham.

Abraham begins to intercede before the Lord on behalf of Sodom.

Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. Genesis 19:1

Here we see that the two men with the Lord, who ate and drank with him, are n fact angels.

And he said to him, “See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.”
Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
Genesis 19:21-22

Key Phrase: The angel said to lot...

  • I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.

The angels, the “men” who were with the Lord and Abraham, who the Bible called “men”, who ate and drank with him, were in fact angels who destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah by fire.

We know the fire came down out of heaven from the Lord, but we also see it was these two angels who were with the Lord, that had the authority to bring down destruction upon that city.

It’s interesting to note these facts as we study who the two witnesses are.

I finally got a chance to watch that movie. This man is very informative as he has researched this the same way I researched it. Once you understand what the two olive trees and the golden candlestick represent as you read Zechariah Chapter 4 and Rev 11:1-14 then you will understand the two witnesses are two groups of people preaching the Gospel during the time of the first six trumpets of God's great wrath being poured out into the world.

The Disciples (Jews) were sent out to preach to the lost sheep of Israel, Matthew 10:5, 6 and Paul to the Gentiles, Acts 22:21. This is the same with these two witnesses throughout the generations as being two groups, one taking the Gospel to the lost sheep of Israel and the other group taking the Gospel to the Gentiles until Christ returns.

Revelations is full of symbolism and when you understand that of what was given John in his visions by searching the scriptures and also Jewish and Roman history then you get the full context of what has already been written and there is no more guessing, but knowledge revealed through the Holy Spirit.

Please pay close attention to this Scripture:
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. (Malachi 4:5,6)

Then pay close attention to this Scripture:
And they asked him [John the Baptist], What then? Art thou Elias [Elijah]? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet [Christ]? And he answered, No. (John 1:21)

While John came in the spirit and power of Elijah (replicating the ministry of Elijah) he was NOT a reincarnation of Elijah.

Enoch, Moses, Abraham and Elijah were not taken up to the third Heaven as some teach as when they were seen (not Enoch or Abraham) of Peter, James and John in Matthew 17:1-9 it was only a transfiguration like a vision that they saw Jesus transfigured as was Moses and Elijah. There is no one in the third heaven except God, Jesus and the angels, John 3:13. Everyone that has ever died is asleep in their grave and when Christ returns they will hear His voice as He calls all of them to come forth, they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation, John 5:28, 29. It is only our spirit/breath/soul that goes back to God who gave it, Genesis 2:7; Ecc 12:7.

Genesis 49: 30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a burying place. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.

Deuteronomy 34:5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.
Deu 34:6 and he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulcher unto this day.

2Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. (Heaven here means atmosphere, first heaven)

Elijah, having ascended into the air by a whirlwind was carried away out of sight beyond the horizon. Several years after he was taken away King Jehoram received a letter from him. How long after? There are some difficulties in figuring the exact chronology as it varies from 2 to 10 years or more. A note in Josephus (a Jewish historian of the first century A.D.) says 4 years, while the JEWISH ENCYCLOPEDIA figures it at 7 years.

Regardless of the exact number of years there came writing to Jehoram from Elijah the prophet, saying..." (2Chron 21:12). Now the wickedness of Jehoram, for which he was being rebuked in the letter, took place after Elijah was taken away, yet the letter speaks of these things as past events, and the punishment to come upon him as yet future. So the idea of some, that Elijah wrote the letter before he was removed by the whirlwind, is proved wrong.

Elijah was taken up by the whirlwind into the first heaven and transported to another location on Earth. God did not see fit in His purpose to reveal his whereabouts. What some people do not know is that there are three heavens. The first heaven is the Atmosphere, the air surrounding the earth. Birds fly "in the heaven" - certainly not to God's throne. We read in Genesis l:2 of "foul that may fly above the Earth in the open firmament of heaven." Jacob, when blessing Isaac, said: "God give you of the dew of heaven," and Moses was joyful that the "heavens shall drop down dew" (Gen.27:28; Deut.33:28). The dew comes from the first heaven - the atmosphere. The second heaven is the expanse of this awesome universe - where the stars, moon and planets are. The Psalmists often wrote about the "Heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon, and the stars, which you have ordained" (Ps.8:3; Gen.1:15-17). The third heaven is where the throne of God exists, where the heavenly temple is found and the heavenly Jerusalem.

2 Chronicles Chapter 21 - Jehoram, being the son of Jehoshaphat, was 32 when he began his reign in Israel. He married Ahab's daughter and was a wicked king who reigned for eight years. According to scripture Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind, 2 Kings 2:11-13. The heaven Elijah went up to was only the first heaven being the atmosphere as there are three heavens described in scripture as the throne of God is in the third heaven. A whirlwind can only happen within the atmosphere of the first heaven. During the reign of Jehoram he received a letter from Elijah, 2 Chronicles 21:12-15. How could he receive a letter from Elijah if he was with God in the third heaven? Elijah being caught up to heaven is the same as Phillip being caught up in the first heaven and carried thirty miles away, Acts 8:39, 40. The only difference is that when the fifty men searched for Elijah they could not find him as he was translated further than their search. Phillip was found within the thirty mile radius where he was translated to.

Elijah lived during the time of King Ahab in 9th century B.C. Some people thought that Jesus was Elijah come back, but Jesus made it clear that John the Baptist is the Elijah that was promised to come before the great and terrible day of the Lord, Malachi 4:5, Luke 1:16, 17.

Those are angels. Gabriel is not called an archangel, but Michael is. So very powerful angels, but definitely NOT the two witnesses of Revelation 11, who are called "prophets" and killed by the Antichrist for their faithful Gospel ministry to the Jews.

According to the miracles described therein, they are none other than Moses and Elijah, both of which met with Christ at His Transfiguration. We know without the shadow of a doubt that Elijah will come back to the earth before the great and terrible day of the Lord. But since the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah) always go hand-in-hand, it will be Moses and Elijah, both of whom were prophets.
Just like Elijah, that it rain not, just like Moses, turn water to blood, smite the earth with plagues, Rev.11:6

Rev.11:8-12
Their dead bodies shall lie in the streets..
They shall see their dead bodies, 3 1/2 days, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

As far as Moses,
In Jude 9, Michael was contending with the devil, disputing about the body of Moses.
Deut.34:6, The Lord buried him, but no man know-how his sepulchre unto this day.

That's right. And it really does not say that they will be two individuals. Most people (including me) just assumed that for a long time.

Two witnesses, Jews and the group of gentile believers...the blood and the water...and a cloud of witnesses, lol! Which I believe to be the believers from earth who have passed on to be with the Lord...

Don't anyone misunderstand what I wrote there, I'm not saying there are more than the two witnesses as we are discussing, those are specific witnesses, with a specific mission. I was just thinking out loud...there are more witnesses on earth beside the "Two" witnesses

Two witnesses, Jews and the group of gentile believers...the blood and the water...and a cloud of witnesses, lol! Which I believe to be the believers from earth who have passed on to be with the Lord...

This reminds me of Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

This is the race of he two witnesses of Rev 11 as being Jew to the Jew and Gentile to the Gentiles like the Disciples and Paul who were called of God.

Were we differ is that these two witnesses have not gone up to meet Christ in heaven, (that's another topic) but are those who are alive during the end of days that have a special seal/anointing on them as God has called them to preach the Gospel in a greater urgency during the time of His great wrath/tribulation during the seven trumpets.

And yet he appeared with Elijah at the Transfiguration. So everything was in its proper sequence.

The transfiguration in Matthew 17:1-13 was a demonstration to three earthly witness, Peter, James and John, that Jesus was who He claimed He was. The three heavenly witnesses were the spirit/breath of Moses and Elijah and the voice of God. Moses and Elijah are still a sleep in their graves as I already gave scripture for that, but it is their breath and Spirit that were transformed into glorified bodies for Peter, James and John to see with their eyes. In Deuteronomy 19:15 the law required three witnesses were required to attest to any fact was satisfied in earth and in heaven.

I forget who said it, but someone had said something about scripture says that Elijah is coming again so he might be one of the two witnesses...Well I thought that I had read somewhere that Elijah had already come. I just found that accidentally while looking for something else. Jesus Himself said that John the Baptist was Elijah.

It is in Matthew 11:11-14

Moses and Elijah are still a sleep in their graves...
Soul sleep is false doctrine. No saints -- OT or NT -- are asleep in their graves. It is the body which presents the appearance of repose (at the time of burial) hence "sleep" is a metaphor for death in the Bible. But all the saints are very much alive and awake in Heaven (Heb 12: 22-24). To be absent from the body i to be present with the Lord (in Heaven).

Regardless, there will be two faithful prophets on earth during the Tribulation (3 1/2 years), and from the description of their miracles, it would appear that Moses and Elijah are those two witnesses or prophets. Elijah most certainly is one of them according to Malachi. And because these are the two who appeared at the Transfiguration, there are the most likely candidates.

That is exactly how I understood it for a long time Brother. But how can we reconcile Jesus's words in Matthew 11 with keeping to that presumption?

Matthew 11:14
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.../

??

Matthew 11:14

The answer is found in Scripture (Luke 1).
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias [Elijah], to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Since the Bible rejects the concept of reincarnation, we need to be clear that John the Baptist was not a reincarnation of Elijah but another prophet exhibiting the same traits and power as Elijah. So the words of Christ must be interpreted as a "metonomy" (metonymy is a figure of speech in which a thing or concept is referred to by the name of something closely associated with that thing or concept.)

Scripture never contradicts Scripture, so here is what John said when asked if he was indeed Elijah:
And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias [Elijah]? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. (John 1:21)

So if John was not Elijah, then the prophecy regarding Elijah coming just before the Day of the LORD must be fulfilled in the future:
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. (Malachi 4:5,6)

The "great and dreadful day of the LORD" is none other than the Great Tribulation (the last 3 1/2 years of Daniel's 70th week) , which comes only after the reign of the Antichrist and the setting up of the Abomination of Desolation. But the first 3 1/2 years are assigned to Satan and the Antichrist. And that is precisely when Moses and Elijah preach the Gospel to the Jews and are killed because of their testimony (which is a torment to the unbelieving world).
And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth... And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. (Rev 11:3,10)
(1260 days/30 = 42 months/12 = 3 1/2 years)

I'm not talking about the false doctrine of soul sleep. I am talking about all those who are in the grave that will be resurrected on the last day when Christ returns that have believed on Him before they died as they will raise to eternal life, John 6:40.

Hebrews 12:22-24 is part of the teaching to endure God's chastisement beginning at vs. 5. It is only their names that are written in heaven and not they themselves per vs. 23.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord is explained in 2 Corinthians 5:1-8.

2 Corinthians 5:1-8
vs. 1 is speaking about the tabernacle of God that is within us as we are the Temple of God, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17, and when we physically die we will have eternal life with Him in the New Jerusalem
vs. 2 we desire to be in our new home, the New Jerusalem, that will be ushered down from heaven at the end of days, Rev 21
vs. 3 we are clothed in Gods righteousness as we will not be found naked, Isaiah 61:10
vs. 4 We are the Temple of God, but yet we do have burdens as we still live in this fleshly body waiting for immortality when Christ returns, 1 Corinthians 15:51-54
vs. 5 basic as we have Gods Spirit dwelling in us as we need to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh
vs. 6 we are confident knowing that if we are walking in the flesh we are absent from God because flesh and Spirit can not mix, Galatians 5:17
vs. 7 we walk by faith, which is Christ Jesus as we seek those things from above and not the things of this world, Colossians 3:1-4
vs. 8 we are confident if we are walking in the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) we are no longer following the lust of the flesh, 1 John 2:16

I already explained who the two witnesses will be as Moses and Elijah are both in their graves according to the scriptures I already gave. It's only mans theories that say it's Moses and Elijah as they only guess that it will be Moses and Elijah, just as many think it will be Abraham and Elijah or Enoch and Elijah as they misinterpret the scriptures.

The great and terrible day of the Lord comes on the last day according to the prophecy of Joel in Joel 2:1-11 and what Jesus said in Matthew 24:29-31. The great and terrible day of the Lord is when Christ returns on the last day and gathers His bride to him which is a great day for the saints, but a terrible day for those who have rejected Him, John 5:28, 29; 6:40, Rev 19:11-21.

Malachi 4:4 is a prophecy fulfilled in Matthew 11:10-15 for John the Baptist who was called of God came in the Spirit of Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord as he called all to repent.

The great and terrible day of the Lord is when Christ returns on the last day and gathers His bride to him which is a great day for the saints...
You are combining God's wrath for the ungodly with His salvation for His saints. That's not how God works. He first shut Noah and his family into the Ark (along with all the creatures) and then He poured out His wrath. He first caused Lot and his family to be dragged out of Sodom, and then poured out His wrath on Sodom and Gomorrah. God is a God of order, not confusion.
Malachi 4:4 is a prophecy fulfilled in Matthew 11:10-15 for John the Baptist who was called of God came in the Spirit of Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord as he called all to repent.
Since I have already shown from Scripture that John was NOT Elijah, that is completely incorrect. Furthermore the Day of the LORD did not come after John preached. Instead Christ initiated the Day of Grace (which is still in effect). Which makes your statement doubly false.

First I apologize for the length, but full context is important for learning truth.

The Disciples who sat with Jesus on the Mt. of Olives in Matthew 24:3 asked Him three questions, when shall these things be, what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? These three questions are now revealed to us as the Spirit of God has revealed them to John who told him to write these revelation visions down and give them to the Church for instruction and understanding. Matthew 24 is an outline of all things that will come to pass that is revealed in full in Revelations before that of Christ return for His Bride. Those events are called the great and terrible day of the Lord.

There was a question asked in Revelation 6:17 about the great day of His wrath is come and who shall be able to stand? Part of this question is answered in Nahum Chapter One for one example as there are many scriptures detailing Gods great vengeance against His enemies and His mercy on those who are called by His name having the seal of God on them, Ephesians 4:30. Matthew 24 gives us an outline and Revelations gives us the meaning of the outline.

The spirit of Jezebel runs rampant throughout the land spreading lies from the pulpit that seem pleasing to the ears as many would rather believe their Pastor instead of searching and Spiritually discern what they are being taught, Matthew 7: 21-23, John 3-3-7; Acts 19:1-6; Romans 10:9, 10; 1 John 4:1-6.

The first four seals in Revelations are the beginning of sorrows described in Matthew 24:4-26 before that of Christ return. There are three woes to come after the beginning of sorrows. The first woe is found in Rev Chapter 8-9 with the first six trumpets. The second woe is that of the two witnesses in Rev Chapter 11:1-14 as the preaching of Gods word will have come to an end as the time of the Gentiles has been fulfilled in the last person repenting and turning back to God. The third woe begins with the seventh trumpet in Rev 11:15 and will end with the Great White Throne judgment in Rev 20.

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb comes in Rev 19 as at this time we have only prepared ourselves to be His Bride, but not yet caught up to Him. It is not until Jesus returns with His army of angels and destroys the beast and false prophet casting them into the lake of fire and, Rev 20, sends and angel to bind Satan for a time while all who are in the grave will at that time hear His voice calling both Saint and sinner to come forth as all will be resurrected at the same time as some will resurrect to eternal life and others to damnation, Rev 20; John 5:28, 29.

Those who are Christ’s will be gathered with those who are still alive at His coming and all will be given their new glorified bodies as they will be with the Lord forever. Satan will be loosed for a time as he deceives the nations as he gathers his army to go up to surround the camp of the saints of God, but are destroyed by fire that God sends down on them. Those who were called to come forth from their graves that are not of Christ will stand in His judgment and as their names are not written in the book of life will be cast into the lake of fire after Satan is cast there.

The Church, which represents the bride of Christ through the Spiritual rebirth of John 3:3-6 by that of Romans 10:9, 10, are sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption, Ephesians 4:30, either asleep in their graves or alive at Christ coming. That day of redemption comes on the last day, John 6:40, when Christ returns and makes an end to all abominations (end to sin) as all Gods enemies will have then become the footstool of Christ, Psalms 110:1; Luke 20:42,43 as they are destroyed forever and remembered no more and then Christ will reign here on earth with all the saints of God forever.

Many teach that the Church will be Raptured out of here before Gods wrath (tribulation), but according to these scriptures the body of Christ who are still alive at Christ coming will be here on earth during the time of the greatest tribulation this world has ever seen nor will ever see again, Matthew 24:21.

Act 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God

Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Rev 3:5; 19:8 Jesus is showing us to look for the signs of his coming

Rev 5:13; 6:16,17 On earth and under the earth are those who are still here until the end of days

Rev 6:9-11 Note where John says fellow servants and brethren that should be killed as they were and we are in the midst of the seven seals right now heading towards the seven trumpets

Rev 7:13-17 Which came out of great tribulation; fulfillment of the gentiles

Rev 8:13 Three woes are war, earthquakes, and meteors

Rev 13:11-18 Here John is showing us about the beast out of the sea that gives power to the beast out of the earth as we are warned to not take its mark

Rev 14:14-20 The harvest of Gods Children

Rev 16:11,15 And they repented not. If Christ returns in pretrib rapture then at that time the door of Salvation will be closed.

Rev 18:23, 24 We have now come out of great tribulation as mystery Babylon has been described and destroyed as we have not yet been caught up to be with the Lord until the last day.

Rev 19:7,8 We have made ourselves ready by enduring through Gods mighty wrath and refusing the mark of the beast

Rev 20:4-6 These verses show that we went through much annihilation and endured all things before the coming of the Lord.

I know i would hate to be in thier shoes for doing the exact opposite of what Jesus told them to do.

The smoke of thier torment shall rise forever

It is most likely that the 2 witnesses will be ordinary humans on the earth today who have learned to put Jesus first in everything.

This makes so much sense. But, the way the scripture reads, there's nothing to really indicate that it's talking about two individuals. It could be two groups of people. Are we not His witnesses?!

The way the scripture reads to me is two prophets. They will witness in the City where their Lord was crucified for 1260 days. When they are overpowered and killed their "bodies" will lay in the streets for 3-1/2 days while those who took joy in their killing celebrate. Then God raises them up and they stood on their "feet".

Its beyond me how anyone doesn't see them as two people.

This is what the Spirit has revealed to me regarding Rev 11. "A sign that can't be mistaken"

Those that take joy in their killing will be deceived and believe the lie of the beast and false prophet who acts in his behalf. And so be condemned. There is no further repentance for them. That is judgment. If fact that not only don't they repent but they curse God as He pours out suffering on those people. Even though God has their lives in His hands.

As Paul wrote concerning the End.
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness
