She was only on a ship once, I think.

I think the base was near Mt. Vesuvius? We also lived in Sicily while over there, though.
its near Pompeii? wow, what a horrible location as far as that threat but its beautiful. man to see that place. that volcano is a super volcano.

I'm not sure. My mom did say that there was always some ash floating around in the air. Or something like that.
Or maybe it was Mt. Etna...I'd have to ask my mom.

Too bad I remember so little about living there. lol Most of the stuff I remember from living there revolves around domestic life, so I don't remember much about how beautiful some of the locations were. We did get to see the Roman Colosseum and have photos from that trip.

the only base I know of in Italy is in the mountains. I didn't know we have a navy base.

Well, US military/intelligence involvement in Italy goes back a long way, and was influenced by the way Donovan and Hoover acquired the cooperation of locals in Sicily, in order to get the Nazis out: reach an accommodation with the mafia. (This is one reason why the mafia were so annoyed with RFK for going after them so hard; one interpretation of JFK Dallas 1963 is mafia blowback.)

La Spezia is a big naval base.

Well, sounds like you have at least the beginnings of great memories of places a lot of folk have never been to, anyhow...

Blessings.

The US Navy has a large presence in Naples, which is actually where the 6th Fleet has its headquarters. There is also (or was when I was in the navy) a navy intelligence gathering site near Brindisi....which is where I was stationed, and a naval aviation facility at Sigonella.

I know that. one of my optional combat patches that I refuse to wear because I didn't serve with that unit, is the Italian army base(vincensa, Italy) it has a name I cant remember it now and it looks like a sword with wings at the hilt.

Maybe in the bowels of Langney there are award badges stored from secret ceremonies 60 years ago which say something like: 'Lucky Luciano and I did this together'.

(PS: Actually in some ways I quite like CIA, they get a bad press often.)

lol the cia didn't exist then it was called the oss. but that is off topic.im trying to remember that patch.its a weird name and its the only patch in the army that isn't subdued.

Same crowd, though: Dulles (Allan Welch), Colby, Helms, Casey...I actually think that in various ways they served the US well, even though they got a bad press from the touchy feely constituency...

(I better get back to topic, though...)

I've lived around the basic area I am now for most of my life. Once my mom left the Navy we quit moving around and have only moved twice seen then--it wasn't all that far relatively speaking.

Would you like maybe one day to live outside the US again, for a period at least?
