Books from the Dark Side

Thanks CatholicXian... I am sure you realise I am a bookworm as well. The list I gave was a PARTIAL list of the Roman Catholic books I have... but thanks for the advise. For instance, I know I have some of John Paul II's writings... I must see where the books are in the piles/shelves. I did enjoy your posts on the moral issues. Also a pet topic of mine.

I will respond fully sometime later.

But one quick answer. The CCC I have is ISBN 0-225-66868-8 (Printed in GB) Bath Press - revised adition 1999. I have several other CCCs but that is the best x-referenced one.

Thanks again.
Anytime.

I be interested in knowing what else you have as well (I had a problem with a few of the other authors you listed, but was very curious about the Catechism). I'm still not sure about it and am trying to find out if that's the UK's "official" translation of the Catechism. Do by chance have one with a green cover? Mine is actually bigger than the one which you reference. lol. But, in the back it has an index of citations--references to Scripture and goes through each book of the Bible. In all, the citation index runs from page 689-720, and it's usually really helpful. What do you mean by cross-referenced?

I read and listen to the bible - the one with 66 books. To me it adds light and confirms the truth revealed by the Holy Spirit.

I must confess to reading only a very small number of books cover to cover since being born again. I really have no desire at all to read anything else but my bible.

I had the same problem, using only a dispensational system to study, instead of reading cover to cover. To help with that, I started reading the NT about 22 days ago and should [God willing] finish it in 8 days. It's been a blessing! Anyone who feels they need more Bible reading time should try the NT in 30 days.

Peace.

Yes, I think it is the UK "official version".. probably has UK spelling (I have got so used to US spelling that I sometimes miss that small point).. as for colour/color of the cover, it is RED. Inside it does say "English Translation for United Kingdom." Geoffrey Chapman is the PUBLISHER! Sorry if I misled you there.

The additional cross-references I refer to are (1) Index of citations (pages 611-648. OT and NT citations, Ecumenical councils, Pontifical docs, etc etc... also by writers (very useful) (2) Subject index. Pages 649-707 (3) Readers Guide to Themes in the Catechism Pages 711-778. Those are more extensive than the other CCCs I have.

I also scratch around in second-hand bookstores... I have picked up some wonderful books on Judaism this way.

One Roman Catholic book I have from a 2nd hand bookshop is "The Christian Faith in the Doctrinal Documents of the Catholic Church" edited by J. Neuner and J. Dupuis published in 1973.

Some damning evidence against the RCC in "Unholy War - The Vatican's Role in the Rise of Modern Anti-Semitism" by David Kertzer.

I have enjoyed "Great Souls - Six Who Changed the Century" by David Aikman which talks about Mother Teresa's compassion, Nelson Mandela's forgiveness, Billy Graham and salvation, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and truth, Pope John Paul II and human dignity and Elie Wiesel and remembrance.

I happily loan out books to those with similar interests.... so I often spend hours looking for a book "I know I have" .... but which now probably is on someone else's bookshelf!

Enough rambling...

:)

Thanks for that JM - that looks like a good plan. Speaking of reading a book cover to cover - that is not my approach to scripture. But it is to those other books that have to be read in sequence to be understood. What I am finding particularly helpful these days in my assimilation of scripture is to use 'audio books'. I can drive and listen, travel on public transport & listen, turn the lights out & listen. I'm redeeming the time so to speak.

I find this audio to be great, the music in the background keeps my attention. http://www.audiotreasure.com/indexKJV.htm

Yes as a matter of fact I have downloaded a bit from that site. I prefer not to have the music background though. What I find with some of these free downloads is that intonations of the (american) voices are quite different (and to me distracting) compared with a well rounded english accent - and more especially when it's the KJV ;-)

Spoken like a true member of the Commonwealth! Now all we need to do is to get the American's spelling right!
