Can we talk about anger?

Some people like being angry. They like to let others know they are not easy going. They like the "difficult" label. Because sometimes the difficult person gets more than the easygoing one. Take the difficult customer for instance. As long as they don't get openly abusive or too angry, they can get what they want.

ESV
3 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

Why was Jesus angry?
In other words, what service were “they” in verse 2 tasked to do per Torah?
I would say “they” were more concerned with keeping their interpretation on how to keep the Sabbath than healing or helping others aka doing their religious duties as God intended them to do. We see “they” many times confronting Jesus in regard to “working” on the Sabbath.

When we look at “why” Jesus healed, it was a teaching moment. It teaches us that we do what is right, even if we get persecuted for it.

Jesus didn't 'heal' for a teaching moment. He healed. How empty that is to the one being healed to say it was for a teaching moment. He healed because He had compassion on those who needed it. And He was angry at those who opposed Him on such legalistic basis.

No. As to why Jesus healed, doesn't teach us to do right even though we are persecuted for it. It teaches us that Jesus is the Son of God with power to heal. It teaches us that to be angry at those who oppose Jesus is justified. It teaches us there is no room for this old mother hen form of pacifism that has infected the Church today. Milk toast Christianity. Nauseous.

I am not convinced the Bible is enough to help us with anger management though. Or anger policy. I turn to guys like Albert Ellis at the moment, a psychologist who was indirectly responsible for the creation of CBT in counselling.

Key words with you here is "not convinced the Bible is enough".

And I am not surprised.

The Bible answers all your questions but have you really questioned it enough?
I find a lot of the meanings are not articulated clearly enough so debates will occur over its essence. You and stove here an example. You can't agree. Who is correct? Maybe neither.

No, the Bible doesn't answer all my questions. But it answers the ones I need.

Oh, yes, I question enough. Long before I am satisfied with a question or answer to present on a forum, I must first be satisfied with an answer.

If you don't see the Bible as the Word of God and sufficient for all answers the believer needs, then we have no place to go to.

For many (not all), they are taught through secular norms that anger is bad. They are not taught how to express that anger in a healthy way
Good psychology and counselling encourages people to express anger when appropriate and in a healthy way. They encourage assertiveness. Saying our preferences instead of stating what "must" happen. Not raising ones voice for example. Also prevention being better than cure.
But a lot of our anger is not good. When we become angry people. Angry by habit. I know I have to monitor my own anger when driving. I am easily stirred up just by a driver not using their indicator light. Slow drivers can irritate me. My anger is not good. I just spoil my own day.

This kind of help and advice on anger I didn't find in scripture by the way. Fortunately God created psychologists like Ellis to help us.

I believe the Bible has an answer to all of life's questions!
Here's one:
The [arrogant] fool’s anger is quickly known [because he lacks self-control and common sense], But a prudent man ignores an insult.
Proverbs 12:16 AMP

How far is Pluto from planet Earth?

Don't you think?
Of course I believe doctors and psychology can be helpful. But the Word is better :)

As to anger it depends on the subject matter.
A good reason to be angry is right but should not last.
A bad reason should not be part of a Christian.
Walk in love and keep the body under.

Also ask and seek wisdom and understanding.

We all have to constantly be aware of our minds and our own egos taking the place of Christ.
I know that I do. And I have to remind myself like Mr humble said about driving.. the flesh is always saying that I'm right and everyone else is not as good as me.
And sometimes it's visa versa..

This is what I know: my spirit seeks to be more like Jesus.
My body and to some extent my soul or in other words my mind wants to do it it's own way.
As a Christian, born again believer I am to let my spirit dominate! To renew my mind (my way of thinking by the Word of God)
And to keep my body under (under total control)
I am convinced about that. Jesus and the apostles taught me.
Now... To act on what I believe is not always that easy, but this is my goal. And I really know it's right and it's the best way for me to go!
Shalom
