They have a vaccine for the flu, and a treatment (Tamiflu). Also most people have some antibodies for the flu, which tends to make cases milder.
More should be done to protect the elderly from the flu though.
I think in the USA the flu season is from around December and can go till about May. I think it was estimated near 500,000 people were hospitalized over last couple years 2018- 2019 with influenza, this year so far I haven't heard of a single case. There seems to be lots of talk about 19.
There are many illnesses still going around besides Coronavirus - trust me. There have been kids at my husband's work that parents have sent in regardless of having the flu and yup, we've all had it. Husband tested negative for Coronavirus when he felt too ill to do anything. No treatment besides anti-nausea medication because of the viral-ness of it.
Although, I'm not sure what's honestly stopping them from calling it Coronavirus if it has all the symptoms, but no proof. I remember getting a bad viral flu, and I had all these strep symptoms years ago. Doctor said, "Test says negative for strep...but your symptoms...your symptoms....." He prescribed me antibiotics anyway, which I ended up having a first time reaction to and then called, got a different script. Antibiotics didn't do a thing...it was a waste of money. He called it strep because he wanted to call it strep due to the symptoms even though the test said I was negative (he assumed false negative without proof).
Also, they are probably so focused on Coronavirus that the flu numbers aren't as out there as normal. I remember a hospital where we used to live would have their Flu/RSV season from March to May or June (this is when the most cases would come in) so they would only allow visitors if they have their temperature checked and such to be sure they aren't exhibiting symptoms and this was back in 2018, but I suppose they did it every year.
Here are the most recent flu numbers I see from the CDC from October 1, 2019 - April 4, 2020:
Preliminary In-Season 2021-2022 Flu Burden Estimates
CDC's weekly cumulative in-season estimates of flu cases, medical visits, hospitalizations and deaths in the United States.www.cdc.gov
-39,000,000 – 56,000,000
flu illnesses
-18,000,000 – 26,000,000
flu medical visits
-410,000 – 740,000
flu hospitalizations
-24,000 – 62,000
flu deaths
As of now in my country we have 0 cases of 19, and 0 new cases in weeks. It's apparently now let's say eliminated.
I'm not a bio scientist so I am not in anyway claiming a fact but I am thinking if 19 has been eliminated then also the common cold and flu should also have been eliminated. Maybe a bio scientist can explain more. Maybe it has, maybe not, I'm just guessing no one should get any type of flu now as 19 is suppose to be more severe than any common flu or influenza.
-410,000 – 740,000
flu hospitalizations
I know Coronavirus we're only beginning to understand and that = scary. Although, the flu has taken more lives and Tamiflu only works as a preventative or if taken within the first few days, otherwise it's not as effective.
From what I'm hearing none of the new vaccines are going to be that effective.
Meaning that a cure antiviral like Tamiflu or the antibody shots is going to be our thing to get out of quarantine.
Wow, that's insane. It's a good thing, though. Low flu rate...can't complain about that!
I'm not a bio-scientist, either. I suppose this Coronavirus thing has a lot of different outcomes. Not sure how much in common is has with colds or flu, but mutations and all that are something. I suppose it's a matter of waiting and praying this gets better.
Hello.
Has anyone here heard of the "SmartNews" app for phone and pc?
It has fairly extensive news covererage on the Covid virus, and it updates frequently during the day, notifying thru the icon on phone.
It constantly shows daily amount of infections and deaths world wide. It is a fairly good news site covering numerous different topics.
First thing I read when I get up in morning.
I live in central Tx and we are under virtual lockdown once again with mandatory facemasks with no end in sight for the forseeble future. HEB is once again setting limits on certain items. No, but I still spotted this in the regular news this morning
