Did the Old Testament Speak of Jesus?

well i see you imply a lot of things it is a song and a song has a message in it . the song came out over 20 years ago . but i will go out tell my dead horse he really needs to move . while watching m mule look at the new gate :horse:horse:thud

It seemed like you were applying it was only a song and I apologize if I misunderstood you. My intent of posting this song was only to show who Jesus is throughout the whole Bible so everyone could go study all these books to see Christ in them. Let us be mature adults and move past this. Thank you.

Since He is God I am sure He always knew He would be the Messiah, as God knew what would happen even before the earth was formed and time began.
Hi K,
Don't you think Jesus was limited as being also 100% man?
Didn't He state that even HE did not know the appointed time for the end....

Mark 13:32
"But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. "

Do you think He knew He was the Messiah when speaking to the Rabbi's in the temple when He was only 12 years old?

Scripture says He grew in stature and wisdom....

Luke 2:52
And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

What about at the wedding at Cana...Jesus said His time had not come yet. Which time: The time to begin His ministry or the time for Him to go to the cross?

Could it be that as He got older He saw Himself more and more in the O.T. scriptures?

Jesus was born in Bethlehem
Micah 5:2

He was born of a Virgin....Perhaps Mary told Jesus the story of the Angel Gabriel and the announcement?
Isaiah 7:14

He lived part of His childhood in Egypt., before they returned to Jerusalem but then decided to go back to Nazareth. Surely He knew this...
Hosea 11:1

His way was prepared by His cousin, John the Baptist.
Isaiah 40:3-5

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

The enmity, which means a hostile enemy, was God putting Jesus between us and Satan. The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world was given to make intercession for the transgressors. Adam and Eve received the first blood sacrifice when God made them coats of skins, and clothed them, Genesis 3:21.
This verse can also be referenced to Rev 13:8 of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Isaiah 53 is another prophecy about Jesus being the arm of God revealed to us

Galatians 3:16 is a good place to start

Unless you count Genesis 1 when God says, "Let there be light". Which John's first chapter attributes to Jesus.
Galatians 3:15-18
15Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.
16Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
17What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.
18For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.

In the above verses, Paul is speaking to some Jews that were converted to belief in Christ, but were not going back to the law. Paul tells them that if the continue in their current path they will certainly have learned the "new way" for nothing and it will be of no use to them.

Paul says in chapter 3 that persons who put their trust in Jesus are like those persons that put their trust in Abraham. God would accept all nations based on faith,,,,just like Abraham was made righteous in God's eyes through his faith.

Rule-keeping does not bring to faith....
But faith does bring to rule-keeping.

Verse 15: Because a covenant had already been made, it does not abolish the covenant that comes after it. A previous covenant is never abolished....but made better, or added to, or changed in some way. God does not abolish what He had promised previously.

Verse 16: The covenant of Abraham states that THE SEED, singular, will hold the promise of saving all nations....that seed is Jesus...through HIM all nations will be saved, and not only the Jews through Israel.

Verses 17&18: The Law was temporary until Jesus came.
It was added to the Abrahamic Covenant to show how sinful man is and that following the laws alone will not be possible and will not cause a right relationship with God.

This would require true faith in God with the help of the Holy Spirit. John 16:7 Jesus went away so the Holy Spirit could come.

And so, we could say that JESUS is the foreseen SEED in the Abrahamic Covenant.

great thread : here are some of the OT prophecies about Jesus

thinking about the answers to the questions - will post when i have thought it through
Have you thought it thru yet?

There are some verses in the O.T. that are so clearly about Jesus.

Was He present in Genesis?
I see Jesus all over the O.T.

Since Jesus is the eternal and only begotten Son of God (God the Word) He is revealed throughout the OT, and He knew before His incarnation the prophecies which would apply to Him. He knew He would be the Messiah before the creation of the world. There are dozens of prophecies pertaining to His first and second comings. Isaiah 53:1-12 is a well-known prophecy. So is Micah 5:2.
I find this interesting:

Jesus knew He would be the Christ from the beginning of time (or should I say from "forever") as the 2nd person of the Trinity.

But at His birth in Bethlehem and his becoming as we are, in human form, did He always know He was The Christ?

I'm sure this can only be opinion....I can't think of any scripture that would tell us with certainty one way or the other....

I have been doing a study where I go through all the books of the OT and find Christ in every single book!

Christ is what the entire Bible is about!
What about the tabernacle?
Is Jesus the BREAD placed on the altar of the tabernacle?.....
Just a few years ago did I notice this.
We miss so much when reading....
Thus this thread....
We each catch Jesus in different places in the O.T.

Like the Kinsman redeemer in Ruth,,,one of my favorite O.T. books.

He is our kinsman.
He is our redeemer.

FK,,,,post a few you think we might never have thought of????

Or even some we all know...
We don't all know the same things and shouldn't assume we do.

Without having read the entire thread, here is my off the cuff response of what I know and memory will permit me to remember.

The short answer is yes, Jesus is on almost every page of the OT. You know that there are many scriptures which speak of, before the foundation of the world...right? He already knew what was going to happen and what He would have to do.
The Lamb slain before the foundation of the world ring a bell?

Now (this is my speculation here...) Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us...He had to do this fair and honest, ok? For our God is a just God. So...when Jesus was first born, I believe that He was born with a blank tablet (knowing nothing) as we were (are)...But! His mother Mary, knew better, knew who He was and so forth because the Angel came and told her...So Mary raised the boy Jesus up to know God, and Jesus drew close to God as a child...nd Father God drew close to Him. So Jesus learned who He was and walked in it.

I have heard stories about Jesus when He was a child, things that He did and so forth (I don't know if the stories are true so don't normally go around repeating them...) Like one where His earthly dad Joeseph was having some difficulty with a carpentry project one time, and had cut a few boards too short...and the boy Jesus supernaturally stretched out the boards for him...andf stuff like that. I believe those could be true...

But I digress, you wanted an example of Jesus in the OT? Ok...

Genesis 5...that super boring genealogy chapter that everyone likes to skip, because it doesn't seem to really teach us anything...But it does.

Here, Chuck Missler can explain it more succinctly than I can.
and that is Jesus in the OT!
There is tons more...
Hi Ed,,,,
Can't see it here.
Could you post the title so I could get it right off YouTube?

Yes...
The SEED of the woman who was going to crush the head of the serpent. (Genesis 3)
Thanks John.

Genesis 3:14-15
14The LORD God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you will go,
And dust you will eat
All the days of your life;

15And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;

He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel.”

Thanks John.

Genesis 3:14-15

“Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you will go,
And dust you will eat
All the days of your life;

15And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;

He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
It's one of those things that is a theme running throughout not just the Torah but the entire Tenakh.
When a blind man was hollering "Son of David" it could have been (and probably should have been) translated as him crying out "Seed of David"...

Because the SEED had been promised to David...he was the last one to whom God promised it to.

""I love to read the New Testament and see the ways in which the biblical authors read their Old Testaments in light of Christ. I love that Matthew depicts Jesus as the true Israel, who escapes from a wicked king like Moses did (Matthew 2:13-18; cf. Exodus 1:15-2:10), who passes through water and is declared God’s son like Israel (Matthew 3:13-17; cf. Exodus 14, 4:22-23), and then is led by the Spirit through the wilderness to be tested for forty days (Matthew 4:1-11; cf. Exodus 40:34-38). But unlike Israel who failed the test (Deuteronomy 8:1-3), Jesus succeeds (Matthew 4:3-4), triumphing over temptation and returning to launch the invasion of Canaan (Matthew 4:12-25), a new Joshua ready to remove the seed of the serpent that is polluting his land and his people.""

And from my own typing:

  • Offering of Isaac by Abraham, where God says He will provide the Lamb, which figures Jesus.
  • Jonah in the belly of the fish for 3 days, like Jesus was buried for 3 days.
  • All the FEASTS of Israel are fulfilled by Christ:
*Passover fulfilled as Christ was our passover Lamb for our sins
*Feast of unleavened bread symbolizing Christ's sinless life, since leaven represents sin
*Feast of the First fruits representing Christ being the first fruits of the resurrection (1 Cor 15:21-23)
*Pentecost obviously representing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost Acts2
*Feast of trumpets being fulfilled at the "last trump" (1 cor 15) which is the resurrection
*Day of atonement being fulfilled on the last day when mass number of Israelites convert
*Feast of tabernacles being fulfilled when Jesus shall live with His people on earth.

AND MANY MORE!

Great post!

Deuteronomy 8:3 also reminds me of how Jesus is our bread.

The manna fell from heaven....each day that day's manna.
It had to be eaten fresh or it would go bad.
The bread of Jesus endures forever....

John 6:27-35
27“Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.” 28Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”
29Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
30So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform?
31“Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.’” 32Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33“For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.”
34Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.

And during the Last supper Jesus gave His very body because HE is the bread of life...

He broke the bread...as His body would bed broken the very next day.

Luke 22:19
And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
