Do we still have quality music today?

I love blues (my favourite). I prefer calling it Deep Blues.;) I also love jazz. R&B is quite superb, hip hop etc


Music in the 70's and 80's and 90's -97 (and also in the 60's ...though I wasn't born in the 60's:)), particularly the blues (plus a little of Country and few other styles/genre) are a lot better compared to what we play today. I am quite more comfortable listening to them than listening to most of the songs and music people play today. Everything has changed.


Although most of these musicians are still living and are still good...but, Where are our today's Abba, Jim Reeves, Don Williams, Whitney Houston (a goddess), Boys 2 men, Phil Collins, Diana Ross, Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey (adorable), Celine dion (does any pitch), Tony Braxton etc in our today's music?

I prefer their music to (most of) what we have today.

Some of our musicians today are still very good. Just to kind of balance it:lol
 
The old people would always say, the rythm, the tempo, the speed;)

We can't dance:shrug:dunno
Stamp your feet and nod your head won't do
 
I went to a New Years Christian concert.

It was geared more toward teenagers and college students.

I was surprised how much "rap" type music there was. That was the worse part...actually it was horrible.

My teenage son didn't like it either.

The normal (Tenth Ave North, Switchfoot, Skillet, etc) definitely made up for it.

Of course those are each Christian bands, maybe not the right thread to post in since this says "secular music". LOL

My brother does rap.
My uncle just had a music concert, and my brother and my little cousine did a mouth magic.
 
I'm not too familiar with a lot of the contemporary secular stuff, but I would say a lot of current music is much better and more intelligent than a lot of older stuff. I grew up in the 70's, and there were great bands (like Pink Floyd) that I loved. But let's face it. There were a lot of cheesy bands out there.

I don't watch much TV, but similarly, I would say the shows on TV today are made with much more quality. I know this goes against all the knocks on TV, but if you ever watch old TV shows, they were not realistically made. The sets were a joke, and they weren't very deep.

Music today has great quality, but I'm not into the genres that are popular. I love Toby Mac! :yes

By quality I mean beauty in wordings, style, mood etc...

My friend calls today's music nonsense. Do we have decent musicians today? Yes! But we had more in those days.

They are like rain, they should interfere in every sea - all of them.

Whitney Houston, C Dion, Boys 2 Men, Maria C., D Williams, Phil Collins, Diana R, T Braxton, Michael B etc - let them rain the sea and give life to the beds.

We still have good musicians today - aye.

Music should be such that old women can dance it;)
 
check out Johnny Lang a blues musician, he also does some gospel music but mostly known for blues, AMAZING guitar work by this young man.

Technically....music has gotten "better"....but people have nothing to say these days. There is no originality anymore!

When one compares the talent that was around then to what is now considered "talent", there is little comparison at all!

True talent, musicianship and artistry has, for the most part, been traded for $$$. :sad Technically, the quality is there, but that and $2.00 may get you a cup of coffee.

You really couldn't drag me to most contemporary secular concerts, but if you're not careful, I'll steal your Steely Dan or Allman Brothers tickets in a New York minute! :toofunny
 
For every criticism of modern lyrics, I can give you a Yellow Submarine. :)

There were great lyrics that kept us Comfortably Numb, but I think we forget about the Doo Run Run! :lol

Realizing this is a Secular Music discussion, I'll only mention that contemporary Christian music is FAR FAR better than it was 10, 20, 30... years ago! We are living in a golden age of this ministry. :yes

When it comes to secular stuff, my wife always says I'm a guy who went into a music coma in the 80's, and all I know is 70's and 80's music. She's right about that, but our oldest child listens to a lot, so I try to stay tuned. There are some hacks out there, but I really believe there are some brilliant lyricists today. I'm "not a poet, so I might not know it" when lyrics go from nonsensical to brilliant (as an artist studies a painting), but I know I like something when I hear it.
