No, not proud but realistic. It's up to us to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps, so-to-speak, with God's help. We are also called to work for our livelihood.
He who has a slack hand becomes poor,
But the hand of the diligent makes rich.
Proverbs 10:4 NKJV
The desire of the lazy man kills him,
For his hands refuse to labor.
Proverbs 21:25 NKJV
The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing;
But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.
Proverbs 13:4 NKJV
Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
Ephesians 4:28 NKJV
But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; nor did we eat anyone’s bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-12 NKJV
I think too many believe they are victims and society owes them a handout rather than a hand up. Of course, this is not true for everyone but I honestly believe it is more common than people want to admit. I also think that when we feel sorry for them we reinforce that belief. I've seen it myself with neighbors living on social welfare programs. Some were even my friends. "Woe is me," they said all the while doing very little to help themselves out of their situation.
I see it around me right now. There's a cry for more help from and for people that have been laid off due to the Covid pandemic and yet take a drive around the city of Alexandria, MN (pop. ~10,000) and there are wanted posters everywhere. Just a quick online search of industrial manufacturers in the Alexandria area and I found 239 listed career opportunities; 3M (30 opportunities), Douglas Machine (31 opportunities), Brenton Engineering (137 opportunities), Massman Engineering (19 opportunities), Aagard Group (11 opportunities), LGC (11 opportunities). This isn't all of the major employers either so there are likely quite a few more. Yes, some of them require a certain level of education or past experience but not all of them. I know for a fact that Douglas Machine, my former employer, will consider training in some cases. Walmart, Mills Fleet Farm, Menards, Cub Foods, Elden Foods, Target, and many other local small businesses too are all looking for help and they are offering $14.00/hour and up plus benefits in some cases. That's 50% higher than the current minimum wage. Some are full time and some are part time.
Yes, it is discouraging to have to start over. I know. I've been there and done that more than once in my life but such is life. Jesus told us life would be hard and God told us it would be hard as early as Genesis 3:17-19 (NKJV)
Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”
