How do we know that the Bible is the Word of God?

MarkT said:
And the Bible is supposed to be what in your mind?

I have already explained this to you.

Well the scriptures are the law and the prophets. Rightly they should be included. Obviously they are more ancient than the gospels, and the letters of the apostles. And what does 'written separately' mean? Paul's letters were written separately? I don't know what you mean. Paul wrote a number of letters to the churches he founded. It makes no sense to say his letters were written separately and therefore they are artificial. Of course he wrote them separately. They were written to the leaders of the churches to share with the members. Anyways, the writings that were being used by the early churches were collected, and the ones that we have are the ones that were included. Mysteriously, they are the 'book' Isaiah predicted. What does, 'put together by men other than the original authors' mean? Of course. There were twelve apostles. Paul's people had Paul's letters. Peter's people had Peter's letters. After centuries of quarrelling, the 'book' was put together.

*sigh*

You're still not getting it. Just read my post again.

Thanks,
Eric

No, it shows your pride and contempt for the truth, and how the natural man cannot understand the spiritual things of God for they are foolishness to him.

  • 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
    1 Corinthians 2:14

All you have is opinion with no substance or evidence of backing much like the blind man cannot describe or define what the color blue looks like; or like the deaf man trying to defend his position on what Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 should sound like.

When you can humble yourself from atop your self-built mountain of pride, then you have a chance to learn the truth. Until then you are just treading time, and will be in the same condition that I was in. I do know that if you want to fight a war of words, you will have to come with much more ammunition than you have at your disposal. I know because I was once in the boat that you are adrift in.

May God give you His wisdom and understanding; and may you be bright enough to not allow your heart to harden beyond reach.

Michael

PS I am a lot nicer than God is going to be to you if you continue in your rejection of Him. You don't have to choose to fear him now since all is fine, but know that one day you will remember my words with pain and sorrow as you find out that these words are truth.

Just as I said: threats, ad hominem, and special pleading.

Wavy;
I am very rarely here but wanted to post this answer to your query to give you something to think about at least. I do not know if this has been covered in thhis thread or not: I do not have the time to read such a lengthy thread.
However, in answer to your question, "How do we know the Bible is the Word of God?" I offer the following.
Although it can be argued that using the Bible to prove the Bible is a circular argument, one must consider testimony within its pages as well as testimony historically concerning the prophecies of Jesus' First Advent. Every prophecy concerning Him and His life and birth, His death and manner thereof, His followers actions, His Resurrection, etc, came true. Every single one of the more than 600 prophecies came true.
Secular history records the existence of this Man From Galilee. Jewsih writings record details about "This One Who Shall Not Be Mentioned". Roman documents mention this Man Who caused trouble in Judea and His followers' devotion to Him.
For even 6 of these prophecies to come true in a single man's life, it would be like if you stacked silver dollars 3 feet deep all over the breadth of Texas, painted on yellow and hid it in the pile somewhere, then parachuted into the state and found the ONE single yellow coin purely by chance.
The odds are astronimical that you would be successful on the first try, yet this is a small comparison to the 600 prophecies ALL coming true in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
Based upon fulfilled prohecy alone, it is apparent that only a Divine Being caused this Book to be written to reveal Himself to us. One would do well to take heed to what this Divine Being has to say to us if He can tell us the future with such accuracy.

This might be somewhat compelling if it were not so easily refuted by the NT's literary dependence on the OT. The prophecies, morever, when examined in their original contexts in the books where they are found are almost always totally unrelated to their recorded 'fulfillments' in the NT.

I have addressed every line of argument in your post that started this dialogue and exposed its flaws. You respond with many an argumentum ad biblica, et al, and accuse me of not posting anything of substance--though you have yet to respond to any of the points I made.

I'll let the reader decide who has defended their claims with reason and who's burying their head in the sand and trying to save face.

You have closed your eyes and ears to the truth, and only see and hear your wisdom which is foolishness to your creator. Now go back to sleep and stop trying to have intelligent conversations about subjects that you are blind and deaf to. If you ever get to the point of humbly seeking the truth, PM me and I will teach you.

Exactly!!

  • 13 Therefore speak I <JESUS> to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Matthew 13:13-15

  • 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Acts 28:25-27

  • 16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. 19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Matthew 23:16-32

The fruit I am referring to is the fruit of the Spirit which is: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.

Because the Church Christ established canonized it by its Christ-given authority.

Uhm...im not sure if your aware, but Christ did not establish the roman catholic church that cannonized "the" Bible. Augustine and Rome did...hence ROMAN catholic church.

and I guess im not remembering the part where Christ gave authority to Rome to cannonize his "perfect word"

(note:I do believe in the Bible lol)

just some FYI

I'm not challenging the assertion, just asking for opinions. I mean, the Bible claiming that it is the Word of God doesn't prove that it is. It's a circular argument. So why do you believe in the Bible as the Word of God? Please don't flame me  I'm just wondering.
LD,

The Bible testifies to the Word of God. The Bible is a record that points toward the Word of God, the Lamb of God, the Son of God, the High Priest of God. The Bible is the same as a brazen serpent on a pole. Except the Spirit of God in Jesus Christ cut you to the quick you will not look and live. Only those who are hurting are benefited by the Word.

We know when we are circumcised in heart.

Unfortunite to say but Muslims, Mormons and Buddhists and the like would make the same claim...yet they will somehow be punished "forever" for not understanding that they were wrong

it all comes down to faith at the end of the day

And when such a one who has no love, joy, peace, longsufferning, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance towards the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they should be called out for who and what they are just as Jesus Christ did to the unbelievers in Jerusalem as recorded in Matthew 23.

To condone such behavior on a Christian forum as this instead of rebuking, reproofing, correcting, and instructing is worse than not saying a word!

  • 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Ephesians 5:9-11

  • 1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Eric,

If numerous predictions made by a theory prove true, that is compelling evidence in support of the theory. Could you expand on your 2 points please?

Best wishes,

Actually, it's worse than that, dad...

The Bible tells us that there we are NOT to follow the Scriptures alone...

No such verse regarding Rome and it's authority.

Quite the contrary. It seems that the Scriptures have something to say about Peter and his particular and singular leadership of the flock, as well as historical precedence before the beginning of the second century regarding the leadership at Rome. We don't have that for "sola scriptura".

The silence permeated for some 1500 years until invented...

Regards

This is the dividing of time. This is the taking away of the words of the prophecy of Christ's sufferings and the glory which should follow.

This the famine for the hearing of the word of God. This is the Judas time, kissing of the Lord in betrayal for the sake of the bag.

Faith comes by hearing (not reading) and hearing by the Word of God. Today is the day if you will hear his Voice, harden not your hearts as in the provocation.

The written word is a schoolmaster to lead us to hear the Voice of the Lord, daily. When we hear the Voice of the Lord we feel the sentence of death first, then the Voice lifts us up from falling on our face and the Voice gives us to speak, not to please man but to please God in Jesus Christ, to the praise of the glory of His grace in Jesus Christ and not to the praise of man. Daniel 10, Revelation 1:10-17, Acts 9:1-6.
