Yeah, that's exactly how I see this. My Dad is a (long) retired HS music teacher, retired from the Newark NJ school system. That was the original car theft capital.
While he never had to do this, it was common for music teachers to fix school instruments with their own money. That on top of doing everything they could to maintain and repair stuff themselves. This in an environment where pay was ridiculously low. (Benefits were good though)

The poverty that exists in this Nation precludes foreign aid, IMHO. Yet our last budget is 2/3 foreign aid?!?

Less than 1%. Most Americans think its 26%:

... on average, Americans say that spending on foreign aid makes up roughly a quarter of the federal budget.

Foreign aid is mostly about providing health care to third world foreign countries. Mostly on stopping AIDS from spreading. Stopping things like Ebola from becoming a pandemic helps protect the US.

Ok I only saw the 2/3 figure here, but a lot of other people saw that and no one challenged it. Looking it up, I'm not finding anything for the last budget, passed 3/23/18. Of course no one read it before passing it, which might have something to do with it. Lots of other info on that budget.

I wonder where the person claiming 2/3 got that number from? I also wonder if what's reported is a solid, all-inclusive figure. What I did find was 6%, but that was for a previous budget, that didn't really make it for FY 2018.

Its $56 billion in total for state and foreign operations. That's about 6% less than last year, as funding for the UN was trimmed. The article lists what projects were funded, and dollars going into those projects.

Decide for yourself which projects are worthy, and which should be considered foreign aid. Some of it is designed to fight enemies (terrorism), which some might consider to be self defense rather than aid.

No one knows, because no one is keeping track. Maybe it was all spent sensibly. There is no way to tell. No paperwork is available to trace it.

Exactly my point. It's rather murky the way they give us those numbers, and what you're quoting here is exactly what I found which is NOT from the budget most recently passed. Glad I can ignore the comment made about 65% of that budget going to foreign aid as it seems to be a closely guarded secret, whatever the number might actually be.
