thanks Lewis,
It's been years since Id an article from PC Mag but this article is indicative of why I ran screaming from, both them and Micro Soft. To this day I am not aware of how MS bought PC Mag's integrity but it is clear in this article they still own it.
Except for the bold face lie of how disks become defragged, it is an informative article. I was already aware of most of it but still good reading. But if I may for those of us that have not been Nerds for forty years or better, I would clarify the lie told in the article.
It is perfectly illogical that the author of this and all of the editing staff, keeping computer geeks up to date did not know the truth about how a Hard Drive in a windoze driven computer become fragmented. The author mentioned, in passing, contiguous writing of the drive but the is a very large difference in the formulas used by the different Operating Systems. The system used by Unix, Linux (better than 1500 different systems now I believe) and I believe by the BSD operating systems is contiguous, meaning in one long string or in common English, continuous, you know geeks.
The formula used by all of the MS junk, I'm not certain has ever been fully understood but check your drive with MS's own tool for defragging, of the shelf with five or six programs installed the harddrive is fragmented. Not ready to be defragged but already it is not being written contiguously.
When Bill Gates stole DOS from Joe and the Mac people and renamed it MS DOS he upset the day lights out of the Unix/Linux people and waged war with them until he left MS in the hands of his conspirators. If anyone can ever explain the math used in writing the in the illogical MS Disk Writing System, please do. But remember, I do not even do trig.
