Is God male, female or both?

Good afternoon,

Is God male or female? That question is begging the question why would it be asked in the first place. We all know God is spirit, but why would God present Himself male? God is referred to as Father. Jesus took on the form of a man.

What if Jesus had been a woman?

This is not such a banal question as you might suppose.

First century Palestine, like many countries today, was strictly patriarchal - men own everything including women. Women did not count apart from having children. They were even barred from the inner precincts of the Temple and are still segregated at the Western Wall, the most holy place for Jews in Jerusalem today.

So there is little wonder that God was perceived as masculine.

wayseer,

We do have a sinful past, don't we, but God presenting Himself as male shouldn't be attributed to man, nor should the ill treatment of women. Correction: But the ill treatment of women can be attributed to man. Sorry about that.

Speculation is sometimes fun, but unfortunately in theology it gives a false basis to build, and in the case of Mormons they will use speculation to trap the opponent to make their heresy "legitimate". There ARE speculations which are banal, such as "how many angels can fit on the head of a pin?" or "if pigs had wings" .

But when we take a situation that is in the Bible, and reverse it, that speculation ALWAYS results in one sort of heresy, or another. The reason for my stating that is for the Bible-believing Christian, anything that is not supported by Scripture is heresy. (Yeah, there are other definitions, but this is a simple, and functional definition.) Reversing a Bible situation and tinkering with what God clearly stated in His Word is also "playing God" because we are dealing with what IS NOT instead of what IS.

That is why such speculation, such as you propose in changing the gender of Jesus is really not a trivial matter. You can speculate about the changing roles of men and women during span of time humans existed, but that has no bearing on the decreed plans of God, made before the foundations of the earth. Such a reversal would also invalidate MANY Messianic Scriptures, from Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel to Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

I hope that this answers your question, and I am NOT calling you a heretic of any sort, OK?

Jesus Christ is Lord!

Jesus Christ is the only Way, the only Truth and the only Life!

And? What has this to do with the topic?

I was on post 665, so I did a couple of quick posts to blow on through.

I figured this thread was dead anyway.

Why do we have gender? We are made in the image and likeness of God? Therefore, based on your reasoning, we should not have gender, right? How about you answer my question. Was Eve created in the image of God? A simple direct Yes or No.
Can you do that? Can you answer the simple question? JLB

Due to the questions you ask, it seems that when you quoted me, you may not have read this:
Try to understand this:
That we are male and female in the image of God says much about God’s purposes with us, His human creatures. We are created to reflect His own nature so that we may represent Him in our dealings with others and over the world He has made. Our goal is to fulfill His will and obey His word. Yet, to accomplish this He has established a framework of relationship. Male and female, while fully equal as the image of God, are nonetheless distinct in the manner of their possession of the image of God. The female’s becoming the image of God through the male indicates a God-intended sense of her reliance upon him, as particularly manifest in the home and community of faith.
Biblical foundations for manhood and womanhood. 2002 (W. A. Grudem, Ed.). Foundations for the Family Series (92). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Books.

The fact that eve was created female does not lessen or alter the degree of the image of in which God created her.

Seriously brother, why is it that you seem to be fixated in the "gender" of God? It really is a non-issue.

If you ask me, they ought to change the name to Blasphemy Foundations For Womanhood. In God's Word, God has often been called "He". God has never been called "She". Take a closer look at Genesis 1:27:

"So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them."

You can clearly see in the Word of God that before the semicolon, He is talking about making man in His image. After the semicolon, He is simply stating that He created male and female. The "image" portion is set aside for man only. The Lord elaborates further on how this is done:

"And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.."-Genesis 2:18-23

The Good Lord wasn't done laying down the Law on how subservient women shall be in this universe either:

"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean. And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled. But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days."-Leviticus 12:1-5

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing."-Ephesians 5:22-24

"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."-1 Timothy 2:11-14

I'm not so sure that the use of the word "man" prior to the semi-colon is gender-specific but might be more species-specific. I don't know the original text but is it possible the word "man" in this place could mean "mankind?"

That's a good question. I tried to take the Hebrew version from biblegateway.com and translate it with Bing Translator, but it wasn't translating. It just kept repeating the Hebrew characters. Even so, the fact that Adam is created first, gets to be called a "man" even when you break the species into two genders, and all the verses in the Bible that reveal a woman's status in the Eyes of God make it a knock-down argument.

God the Father: Never referred to as "Mother"; Referred often as "He" but never "She"; often referred to as "King" but never "Queen":

"Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah."-Psalm 24:7-10

Referred to as a "man" but never a "woman":

"The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name."-Exodus 15:3

Referred to as "husband" but never "wife":

"For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called."-Isaiah 54:5

Jesus Christ: Whoever says anything feminine about The Son might have to answer for it on Judgement Day, unless he/she was extremely mentally handicapped while on this earth, or he/she only received their information from false prophets.

The Holy Ghost: He impregnated Mary.

Three Males in One Trinity is the most masculine entity that has ever been known to exist. It's not that big of a deal, as long as men and women all get to go to Heaven. Ladies, this life on earth is extremely short, so just behave as the Lord told you to and you will be rewarded in Heaven.

Interestingly, the Shekinah in traditional Jewish writings is generally regarded as the feminine aspect of God.

That is interesting . . . interestingly wrong.

Your claim is not wrong. Their theology is what is wrong.

Was Eve made in the image of God?

Was Eve made in the image of God? That's the first time I've ever heard that question asked. Is there a specific denomination that teaches this?

Not that I know of.

What is your answer?

Females are made in the image of God every bit as a male. We have different roles, and we are anatomically different. But that's it.

Galatians 3:28

New King James Version (NKJV)

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

If there is a denomination that teaches that, I'd like to stay away from it as far as possible. Who knows what else that denomination is teaching. Muslims my agree with that statement as poor as many of them are treated.
