Is it Necessary to Keep the Law?

What does being dead to sin mean?
Having the devil's temptations banished from your mind, living by the Holy Spirit, pursuing God given purpose with all your heart and no distractions. You need to discover this purpose - what you really love to do, you know, when you're doing it, it brings you a joy; when you succeed, it makes you proud; when you finish, you feel peace, grateful and content. you do it with desire, skill and dedication, being fully present and intentional, meanwhile the whole whold fades away into the background; and most importantly, it must be a net positive that improves your life and others'. This could be your job, hobby, voluntary or missionary work or merely house chores, the point is, you do it as a service to God, not men. For me, it's cooking and baking, which not only feeds my stomach, but my soul.

Folks around here would lecture on your in archaic Christianese such as "the life of Christ manifests in every greater degree in how I live", that doesn't mean anything to you unless it's translated into your own personal life by you knowing what exactly you're meant to do and how you're meant to live with absolute certainty and confidence. Once you reach that level, you'll understand that sin is a counterproductive, destructive force that competes with your purpose and eats away your resources, being dead to sin is being alive in your PURPOSE.

Is it important to God that Christians keep the Law, as this is a question which many false ideas and beliefs have created confusion for many Christians. Now, if the works of the law cannot save a person, is it therefore necessary to keep the law? Paul hits on this in Romans 6..

Romans 6:1-2
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

In other words, does grace give us a license to disobey the law of God? And we see his answer, 'God forbid.' especially if we ' that are dead to sin'. And if we look we find many ways that Christians try to invent their own definitions which allow or condone lawbreaking. The Bible says sin is violating the Ten Commandments, the law which has been described as done away with or abolished or not applying to Christians. Is this true or are the moral precepts just as needed today as they were when God wrote them on the tables of stone. If you think about it, nothing has happened to make them less binding than they were when God gave them. In fact, scripture shows that Jesus came to magnify the law and to open up its spiritual meaning and application, making it more comprehensive than the legalistic Pharisees ever imagined. From Christ's perfect life of obedience, we can see the spiritual essence of keeping the law which many wouldn't recognize, nor made possible apart from Him.

Even though the law points out sin, it has no power to save from sin. There is no justifying, cleansing grace in it. All the works of all the laws would not be sufficient to save a single soul, for the simple reason that we are saved by grace through faith, as a free gift.

Romans 3:20
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

The law was not made for the purpose of saving or justifying. It was made to show us the 'knowledge of sin' and our need of cleansing and to point us to the great source of cleansing, Jesus Christ. And it also tells us...
James 1:23-25
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

I think one thing to keep in mind that we are children of the promise God made to Abraham. Not the children of the law given through Moses.
We are no longer under the Mosaic law, however the Mosaic law shows the heart of God ( if humans would see it). When Jesus expounded on the Mosaic law for instance during the sermon on the mount the heart of God becomes even more clear. God doesn't want us following rules God wants hearts that are surrendered to Him.
No, Christians do not have to follow the law. Christians follow the spirit of the law out of love for God.
It may not seem like a huge difference but it's the difference between being a Pharasie and being a follower of God.

Jesus has dealt with sin.... the issue of sin is done and over with. Jesus just wants us to draw close to Him and have His heart for people. Don't focus on avoiding sin focus on drawing close to God.

Sin is like disease, law is like diagnosis, grace is like treatment. Diagnosis only reveals and identifies disease, it's the treatment that actually deals with it, but obviously, you can't have a correct treatment without a correct diagnosis.

The 4th commandment law (3rd if you're RC) says that the 7th day of the week is to be kept holy by not doing any work on that day. So, what is the spirit of that commandment?

You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

The Sabbath was a day to remember what God has done for you.

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Do what you think is right in regards to the Sabbath.

My thoughts. If God worked 6 days and rested for one. What makes us think we can work more than God without suffering ill consequences?
Or
Are we so lazy or self indulgent that we in America require more than one day off a week?
I ask these as genuine questions. I am not saying that either are true just things that come to my mind as I think about it.

"The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

To all those who think that all the laws have been fulfilled in Christ you are very wrong as below are the laws that are written upon our heart and can only be fulfilled when Christ returns and makes an end to sin by throwing it into the lake of fire with that of the beast and the false prophets. The only laws that Christ has fulfilled so far are that of the Temple and its sacrifices. Someone please show me in scripture where Jesus has fulfilled all the laws, because in Matthew 22:35-40 and Matthew 5:17, 18 Jesus does not say that he has already fulfilled all of them, but that love was the greatest of them all.

There are laws (commandments) of God that were especially written just for the Hebrews pertaining to the rituals of the Temple, sacrifices, festivals, Torah, Kohanim and Levites, the King and the Nazarite. Then there are the existing moral laws (commandments) for all of us to still follow as in prayers and blessings, love and brotherhood. The poor and unfortunate, treatment of the Gentiles, Marriage, divorce and family. Forbidden sexual relations, business practices, employees and servants. Vows, oaths, swearing, Court and Judicial procedures. Injuries and damages, property and property rights, criminal laws. Prophecy, idolatry and all its practices as the moral laws (commandments) keep us in line with the will of God.

We need to present ourselves a vessel of honor that God delights in as we allow the light of Christ shine in us and through us. This is a testimony of Gods grace and mercy as it is not ourselves that do any good thing, but Gods Spirit working in us and through us as we surrender our will to that of Gods will to be done.

Morality in God is His greatest commandment of love as we treat others as we want others to treat us. God is love and wants us to love and treat others as He loves and treats us.

Matthew 22:
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

>>>Is it Necessary to Keep the Law?

<<<Good question,
I think the right person to be asked this question is: Jesus, and his father, do we agree?

Matt. 5:17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Deut. 30:16 Obey the Law.
Proverbs 19:16 Keep the Law.
