The Post Crucifixion Prophesied Events never happened:
When the people were asking Jesus Christ if he was going to show them a sign, He replied by saying that the only sign that they should expect is the sign of Jonas. Jesus also made sure to specify what exactly this sign was. The details are shown in the following verses: :
Matthew 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
Matthew 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Jesus here emphasized what will happen to him by specifically saying that he will be like Jonas in terms of the number of days and nights he will be in the heart of the earth, " For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." (Matthew 12:40). Now let us see if this prophecy came to pass. .
Jesus was crucified on Friday, this is certainly known among all Christians, and that is the reason for calling that Friday by "Good Friday". Jesus was buried on Friday night. Now let us start counting: :
1.Friday night Jesus was buried. This is night number 1. .
2.Saturday day Jesus was still in the grave. This is day number 1. .
3.Saturday night Jesus was still in the grave. This is night number 2. .
Mary Magdalene, very early in the morning before sun rise and after the Sabbath (Saturday), went to the see Jesus, and he was not there. The following verses relate this event: :
Mark 16:1 And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
Mark 16:2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
Mark 16:3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
Mark 16:4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
Mark 16:5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
Mark 16:6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
The number of days and nights that Jesus had spent in the heart of the earth is 1 day and 2 nights. This clearly challenges what Jesus had prophesied. When I tell this to my Christian brothers, some of them responded by saying that what Jesus wanted to really say was that he will be gone for a while, and not that he will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. This is clearly not the case. Had Jesus meant that, he would have said it, but it is clear that he wanted the people to know that this was a sign (miracle) and that it will be like Joans' sign, and that he will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. These were his own words.reply pls!!!

I'm not too smart but I think I have your answer. For the Jews, a new day begins in the evening at about 6pm. Early in the morning is mid day for the Jews. If Jesus was placed in the tomb on a Friday, it could have been on the eve of Thursday for us, Friday for them. This would account for 3 days & nights in the tomb & rising on the first day, still on day 3. Get it ?

Although Matthew Jesus will arise in 3 days, Luke claims on the 3rd day. So Jesus must have stayed in the tomb for 3 nights & part of the 3rd day. So since the day begins at sundown around 6pm. a day for the Jews was from 6pm until 6pm the following day. So if Jesus was crucified on Thursday, then it became Friday on the night of Thursday when He was placed in the tomb. This is the first night Jesus spent in the tomb even though it's still the first day. Remember, for the Jews, the evening comes before the morning until 6pm. The next morning is still Friday there until 6pm that evening, then it becomes Saturday at 6pm. So that's 1 day Jesus has been in the tomb. Now Jesus spends the 2nd night in the tomb until morning of the same day Saturday. Later that evening, the Saturday becomes Sunday & now Jesus has been in the tomb 2 days & 2 nights, going into His 3rd night. In the morning will still be the 3rd day, Sunday, the day of the resurrection. See ?

A Friday Crucifixion - Jewish people in the First Century considered a portion of one day to be an entire day. Since Jesus was in the tomb for part of Friday, all day Saturday, and a portion of Sunday, this is considered to be three days. Mark 15:42 says that Jesus was put to death "the day before the Sabbath." If this is referring to the weekly Sabbath (which is Saturday), then Jesus would have been crucified on Friday.

A Thursday Crucifixion - A Thursday view suggests there were too many proceedings that happened between Jesus' burial and the day of His resurrection (Sunday) for Jesus' death to occur on Friday. This view holds that the only full day between Friday and Sunday was Saturday, which is the Jewish Sabbath. One or two more days takes care of that problem. Consider this example: Suppose you haven't talked to your co-worker since Monday evening. It is now Thursday morning. You say, "I haven't talked to you in three days" even though it has only been two and a half days (60 hours). This example illustrates how Thursday to Sunday could be considered three days.

A Wednesday Crucifixion - A Wednesday view suggests that there were actually two Sabbaths on the week of Jesus' crucifixion. The first Sabbath occurred on the evening of the crucifixion (Mark 15:42 and Luke 23:52-54). Following this Sabbath, the women purchased spices (Mark 16:1). The Wednesday point of view holds that the "Sabbath" mentioned here was the Passover (see Leviticus 16:29-31; 23:24-32, 39 for examples of high holy days (Sabbaths) that are not necessarily the seventh day of the week).

On the week of Jesus' death, the second Sabbath was the weekly Saturday. Luke 23:55-56 says, "The women who had come with Jesus. . .went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment." Unless there were two Sabbaths that week, the women would not be able to purchase the spices after the Sabbath, but prepare those same spices before the Sabbath. If the crucifixion occurred on Thursday, the Passover would have started Thursday at sundown and ended at sundown on Friday, at the beginning of the weekly Sabbath (Saturday). If the women purchased the spices following the first Sabbath (Passover), they would have purchased them on Saturday and would have violated the Sabbath.

A potential problem with this view is the disciples who walked together with Jesus did so on "the same day" that Jesus' resurrected (Luke 24:13). Not recognizing Jesus, they share about the crucifixion (Luke 24:21). They say "today is the third day since these things happened" (Luke 24:22). How can this be if there are four days between Wednesday and Sunday? A possible explanation says that they may have been counting Wednesday evening as Christ's burial, (Wednesday evening begins the Jewish Thursday) and Thursday to Sunday can be considered three days.

Is it really essential to know the exact day of Jesus' crucifixion? If it was, God would have told us in His Word. However, it is important that Jesus died, and that He physically rose from the dead. He did this to take the punishment that we deserve!

The number of days and nights that Jesus had spent in the heart of the earth is 1 day and 2 nights.
By western standards. The Jews did not reckon by western standards.

Count in Reverse?

Now let us start counting: : 1.Friday night Jesus was buried. This is night number 1. . 2.Saturday day Jesus was still in the grave. This is day number 1. . 3.Saturday night Jesus was still in the grave. This is night number 2. .

Try going in reverse and start with...

Matthew 28

1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave.

6 He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.

Mark 16

1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of <sup class="footnote" value="[<a href=" http:="" www.christianforums.net="" "#fen-nasb-24875a""="" target="_blank">a]">James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, they *came to the tomb when the sun had risen.

(*came is a NASB past tense translation of the Greek present tense usage)

Luke 24

24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

Count in reverse, three days and three nights...

Saturday Evening (Sunday Morning Before Dawn Resurrection?) (1)
Saturday Day (1)
Friday Evening (2)
Friday Day (2)
Thursday Evening (3)
Thursday Day (3)

To fulfil a LITERAL "three days and nights" period, Christ would have been crucified on...

Wednesday? Thursday?

Perhaps if you calculated the year of Christ's crucifixion, and then calculated which day the Passover (high sabbath) started that year...?

My calculations are purely speculative to be sure...I don't really know, I wasn't there.

It does seem likely however, that from a literal standpoint the crucifixion was not on Friday.

Another thought that just occurred to me, if the Passover is 7 days long beginning and ending with a sabbath, and Christ spent 3 of those days in the earth...?

Leviticus 23

4 ‘These are the appointed times of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at the times appointed for them. 5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight is the Lord’s Passover. 6 Then on the fifteenth day of the same month there is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord; for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall not do any laborious work. 8 But for seven days you shall present an offering by fire to the Lord. On the seventh day is a holy convocation; you shall not do any laborious work.’”

Hi Rick:

You are correct. If Jesus (Yeshua) died on a Friday, then what he said about 3 days and 3 nights in the tomb would make him a false prophet. However, he did not die on a Friday, but on a Wednesday. It's tradition that has him dying on a Friday. Each year I go thru this over and over again like a broken record regarding

1) You cannot fit 3 days and 3 nights from Friday evening until Sunday predawn. (Even a child knows to ask that much and can see the nonsense in it)
2) That Yeshua followed and fulfilled the Hebrew feasts, namely Passover Lamb slaughtered late on Nisan 14, Buried for the first Day of Unleavened Bread (the 15th) and arose 3 calendar days later (For Firstfruits) on Nisan 18. Firstfruits by Law was the "morrow after the Sabbath" thus on a Sunday. If the 18th falls on a Sunday, just count back to the 14th and see what day of the week it falls on. Simple as that.

3) And then in spite of the mathematical and prophetic pattern I laid out that explains it to a T, you will still have people with it going in one ear and out the other and then try to fit 10 pounds of fudge in a 5 pound bag hoping that Friday to Sunday is somehow 3 days and 3 nights. And then instead of listening, they ask the same question over and over and over again...... such is the mental hold and power of tradition because that's what they were told, not derived on their own.

That's not exactly what Luke says. If you read carefully, Luke is consistent with the other three gospels in that when they went to the sepulchre, Jesus was already risen. Sunday is when they went there, that is the event that happened "the same day". Not that Jesus rose, but that they went to the sepulchre and found him missing.

Later, Cleopas unwittingly tells Jesus that it's been three days since these things happened (the crucifixion). That is indeed what we would call Sunday afternoon. 3 full days had indeed passed since then (with a few hours added). Since it is not prophecy Cleopas was giving, it doesn't have to be exact. However, since part of the day had passed, he didn't say "it is the fourth day since these things were done." So I doubt that the Jews really considered a part of the day a full day.

You also mentioned:
Following this Sabbath, the women purchased spices (Mark 16:1).

That is true, but Luke 23:56 says they prepared the spices before the sabbath. How is it possible that they bought them after the sabbath and prepared them before? It isn't unless there were two sabbaths separated by a non sabbath.

Just a wisecrack (as I am always the jokester type), but what always amazes me about people is they frantically try to fit 3 days and 3 nights into a Friday crucifixion, or even a Thursday one and swear their math makes sense. But if they did anything else by the calendar, say go on a cruise, and they were promised a 3-day cruise and the captain had them home in that same time period, they would certainly know that was not 3 days and gripe soon enough! :toofunny

I seem to recall somebody tracking the Jewish Calendar back 2,000 years ago and within the period of the life of Jesus, Passover fell on Wednesday and Thursday. Do you remember that study from years past?

True Tim... But let's keep this Biblically... The Jews thought enough to get Jesus buried before 6 PM. They think enough of time to start the sabath at 6 PM. Down to the minute! Yet, aww 1 hour or 2.... We'll call it a full day!
But back to your example.... Wish my employer saw it that way.... Work a couple of hours and get paid for a full day! :)

Well, actually grace works that way, but time and my employer and 3 days and 3 nights and prophecy don't!

Hi Stovebolts:

To be honest, I was not exaggerating when I said this topic comes up every Easter, so if you are referencing something from years ago, there's no way I'd remember any of it. It becomes a blur there's so many. I think there's 2 similar threads going on right now.

All I can say are two things:

1) We can only approximate when Passover was 2000 years ago based on lunar calculations, but we have no idea when the moon was actually sighted so it may be off a day, maybe more. We only have general ideas.
2) Even if we knew the exact day of the week, it would do no good. Why? Suppose Passover was on a Friday 30AD, and on a Wednesday say 31AD. Then the Friday folks will select 30AD as the year of Yeshua's death and the Wednesday people will select 31AD since historians don't have the exact year pinned down anyway and there's acceptable room for believing any year within a reasonable range. Typically 26-36AD are the lower and upper end years accepted by historians. Heck, I'm old enough that I don't even remember what year something occurred in my lifetime let alone what happened 2000 years ago.

I seem to recall somebody tracking the Jewish Calendar back 2,000 years ago and within the period of the life of Jesus, Passover fell on Wednesday and Thursday. Do you remember that study from years past?
Actually, for the two most common years believed to be the ones in which Christ was crucified -- 30 and 33 AD -- the Passover Sabbath and the weekly Sabbath coincided.

Actually, Only the blind go with that what is common. The enlightened and those that seek the truth go with what is true.

Actually, Only the blind go with that what is common. The enlightened and those that seek the truth go with what is true.

And that's why I selected 34AD based on my calculations, the same year Sir Isaac Newton, the guy in my avatar believed. However, ol' Sir Isaac believed unfortunately in a Friday crucifixion, but the lunar month one month earlier began such that Passover probably was on a Wednesday, assuming a cloudless sky. Of course NOBODY knows when Passover occurred on any year Yeshua died because they went by eyesight. And don't let anyone claim they do. So, even I admit my belief is just a theory, albeit a plausible one.

My calculations are based on astronomy, knowledge and proficiency in the calendar, knowledge of gnomonics, the prophecy in the Great Pyramid, and the astronomical position in Revelation 12. Plus, I take historical knowledge into consideration to prove it's also possible (such as testimonies of eclipses).

This is why I get impatient with those who would "correct" me and act like I don't know how to count to 3, and correct me when I reject their idea of "inclusive reckoning" just so that the calendar fits their idea of a time line.

I have yet to meet someone who displayed a knowledge of the calendar and time like I do in these forums. If I did, I would respect their position, but just the way they debate I can tell they don't know the first thing about it. They are more interested in defending their tradition they were spoon-fed and telling me how to keep a calendar because they don't want to admit they were rooked and believe a lie. They forget.... I once was like them believing in the stupid time lines the church teaches, but I later rejected it for good reason. I don't believe in something without a good cause. But I know this for sure... they did not arrive at their position with the calculations the way I did. They are just parroting what they were taught but act like they know all about the calendar and what 3 days and 3 nights mean.

Tim from PA,

LOL, yeah, I've been here every year around Easter as well. Both you an Vic have helped me understand this much better. Both of you also have helped me to see in Scripture how to calculate the month of Jesus Birth that always comes up each Christmas too. LOL.

Oh, and I was wrong about what I said earlier. I thought from years back somebody said passover always happened on a wed or thur. I must have been mistaken since a quick google search came up with this.

That being said, your also right that what the priests observed could have been off by a day.

listen brother, for the jews friday ends at 6pm.and after 6 pm it is saturday.
so,friday day starts at 6 am in the morning before that it was friday night. according to our calender it was still friday day because we know satrts after 12pm in thursday night.so from the jews point of view and be more lenient with you suppose friday afternoon he was taken off from the cross and buried..so he was buried (death)for friday day(1 day),saturday night(1 night),saturday day(2 days),sunday night(2 nights),and sunday early morning (And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun Mark 16:2) mary magdalene he (jesus) was not there.so still the prophecy is unfulfilled.because it is only 2 days and 2 night.and jesus gave this prophecy to the jews acording to their calender.
And according to our calender it was still a friday day because it starts 12pm in thursday night.so friday day he was buried(1 day),friday night(1 night),saturday day(2 day),saturday night(2 night) and early in the sunday morning same as discussed above. so still it is 2 days and 2 night.

so,friday day starts at 6 am in the morning before that it was friday night. according to our calender it was still friday day because we know satrts after 12pm in thursday night.so from the jews point of view and be more lenient with you suppose friday afternoon he was taken off from the cross and buried..so he was buried (death)for friday day(1 day),saturday night(1 night),saturday day(2 days),sunday night(2 nights),and sunday early morning (And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun Mark 16:2) mary magdalene he (jesus) was not there.so still the prophecy is unfulfilled.because it is only 2 days and 2 night.and jesus gave this prophecy to the jews acording to their calender.
And according to our calender it was still a friday day because it starts 12pm in thursday night.so friday day he was buried(1 day),friday night(1 night),saturday day(2 day),saturday night(2 night) and early in the sunday morning same as discussed above. so still it is 2 days and 2 night.

A Friday Crucifixion - Jewish people in the First Century considered a portion of one day to be an entire day. Since Jesus was in the tomb for part of Friday, all day Saturday, and a portion of Sunday, this is considered to be three days. Mark 15:42 says that Jesus was put to death "the day before the Sabbath." If this is referring to the weekly Sabbath (which is Saturday), then Jesus would have been crucified on Friday.

sister,if you consider part of the as full day still the the prophecy in not fullfilled..still it is 3 days and two nights, but jesus said(Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.)3 days and three nights.

Is it really essential to know the exact day of Jesus' crucifixion? If it was, God would have told us in His Word. However, it is important that Jesus died, and that He physically rose from the dead. He did this to take the punishment that we deserve!

then why did give such a powerfull prophecy..when his people asked him for a sign he refused to give any ,he could have said about his past miracles i.e he heal the born blind,or he gave life to the dead by asking God,but he put all his eggs in one basket, and as a miracle(sign) he gave the the sign of jonah. And he told(Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.)not only about the days and time,he also said he will be like jonas not unlike jonas.jonas was alive throught the 3 days and 3 nights.when he was thrown to the sea he was alive, when the fish swallow him,he prayed to God through there and he was alive, because a dead people do not pray.when the fish vomits him he was alive.but jesus was dead in his tomb.Jesus was unlike jonas .

The Wednesday point of view holds that the "Sabbath" mentioned here was the Passover (see Leviticus 16:29-31; 23:24-32, 39 for examples of high holy days (Sabbaths) that are not necessarily the seventh day of the week).
the gospel writers are not unanimous regarding the time when jesus was hoisted onto the cross.but johns tells us that jesus still before the judge(pilate) in the praetorium at 12 noon:"...and about the sixth hour(hebrew time).he said unto the jews,Behold ,your king!"-(john 19:30).and for what from 2000 years you are celebrating good friday ,if he was not hanged on friday?the roman catholics claims to have an unbrokable chain of pope since from the first pope peter.who decieved you and peoples before you regarding goodfriday.satan??no no his(satan) motive is not that to decieve you in the matters of celebration wheather you celebrate it on friday or wednesday or thursday..He(satan)decieves you in the concept of god.our God is not three in one or one in three..our god is only one in all respect. He begets not nor is He beggoten. And there is nothing like Him.
