Learning from the Holy Spirit or man?

I agree with you, Vic as you speak as a moderator of the forum and understand what you are saying and will join my prayer to yours about the proper understanding of the Word of Truth being rightly interpreted especially as it is taught to others.

This is not to say that I am willing to stand down in defense of my sister in Christ, should that be needed. I do appreciate balance and salute your well stated and balanced sentiment. Whirlwind is my mother in just the same way that Mary became John's mother by the utterance of Christ. Free is my brother as are you also. What puts Whirlwind above me is that she feeds me. No, this is not to mean that every word from her mouth is equivalent to God's word. I do love her spirit though and I'm pretty sure that's what we're talking about here.

The passage and interpretation in question:

WW said:
]Look around this world at all the "Christians." Do you believe we all see? Brother will be against brother (and are now). Meaning....Christian brothers!

Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in My name, saying 'I am Christ;' and shall deceive many.

I believe coming in His name means....as a Christian.
Jesus clearly equates the "many shall come in My name" with "saying 'I am Christ'". This verse is stating that many will come claiming to be the Messiah. I fail to see how that is being dogmatic when the text plainly states what is meant by those who will come in Jesus' name. :confused

That's it, that's all. That was my point.

Sparrowhawke said:
The Bible is more than a history book. The book of Jude and the 2nd letter from John were not addressed solely to "Jews", now were they?
I am well aware of that but we are not discussing any other verse, let alone any other book.

Sparrowhawke said:
If our sister Whirlwind gleans truth from statements of CHRIST Jesus that are applicable to her heart today who are you to say that she is wrong?
Because many of these statements encroach upon, if not fully support, the heresy known as Gnosticism.

Sparrowhawke said:
By what authority do you declare that the word given into her heart by the Holy Spirit (who is her Teacher and Comforter) is wrong?
By what authority are you declaring that my understanding of it is not of the Holy Spirit?

The whole point is whether or not these things are actually being taught by the Holy Spirit.

I do know and respect the fact that you are moderator here on the forum but that does not ensure that you are speaking with "Papal Infallibility".
Vic has addressed the rest of your post well. But I will add that my being a moderator has nothing to do with what I state and gives my understandings no additional authority.

What I state usually is in line with historic, orthodox Christian belief; not all of it though, to be sure. The scariest part is how some will unquestioningly accept what someone else says is from the Holy Spirit merely because they claim that that is the case, even when that "revelation" clearly doesn't line up with Scripture.

Of course we learn from the Holy Spirit, that is without question. But as has been stated by someone else, the Holy Spirit works through many people--it is precisely why some are given as teachers and pastors. The title of this thread itself is a red flag. I strongly question the claim that the Holy Spirit has given someone personal revelations when they don't line up with Scripture or orthodox Christian belief and in fact line up more with other belief systems.

If we keep thinking there are hidden meanings everywhere, then we can make the Bible say many things it does not. Trust me, if you all want to continue on this path, I can reinterpret the whole Bible based on hidden meanings. You'll be amazed at what it "really" says.

free i think that's why pastor and teachers are held to a higher degree of responsibily. When i was young in christ i got off on a tangent a few times and was reeled in by my pastor, thank the Lord for her, now i will address one on one with my pastor about osas, where does the bible support it, and in love rather then rebel and cause division, i got to different church then the first one.

I am not going to partake in this thread, but I will say, that this statement is untrue and unfair. WW has not written anything that is linked to Gnosticism.

Are some things hidden in types and shadows? Of course they are , the Bible tells us they are.

1Co 10:11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

G5179
ÄÃÂÀοÂ
tupos
too'-pos
From G5180; a die (as struck), that is, (by implication) a stamp or scar; by analogy a shape, that is, a statue, (figuratively) style or resemblance; specifically a sampler (“typeâ€Â), that is, a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning): - en- (ex-) ample, fashion, figure, form, manner, pattern, print.

Clearly we can read into them. The simplest example would be the ram provided when Abraham went to sacrifice Isaac.

Gen 22:8 And Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb (Of course we know that this indeed pointed not to the ram only, but also to the Lamb Jesus.)

There are literally thousands of types and shadows in the Bible.

Alright, let's all take a step back and breathe. I don't want this going downhill further than it has.

No one will dispute that there are types used in the Bible. However, in the verse in question, it is clear as to what Jesus is referring. Often the Bible means what it plainly says. If someone wants to go deeper in Scripture, take Hebrew and/or Greek and some hermeneutics classes.

The whole reason I asked what the point of this thread was, was because it seems to me that there are those, thinking they are being spiritual in seeking or receiving "deeper" hidden meanings and truths, are the ones being taught by the Holy Spirit while the rest of us are being taught by men. The obvious implication is that somehow being taught by men means not being taught by the Holy Spirit.

But that is the fallacy of the false dilemma, since another obvious choice is that the Holy Spirit works through others to bring us the truth. And I would argue that that is most often how it is done.

FREE WROTE: "we are not discussing any other verse, let alone any other book."

I would again disagree with you (that is not what "we" are speaking about if I am part of the discussion because I am speaking about something greater) but I can not presume upon your position to direct you back to topic because that would be presumptuous.

Still, you made my point for me. Kindly compare the actual topic, "Learning from the Holy Spirit or man?" with my statement about "pine-cones" and "trees" and "forests". Your statement demonstrates the truth of what I meant. Thank you, I could not have have put more emphasis on it than you have.

~Sparrowhawke

An anecdote might not be the logical way to show you more about what I mean but please consider that "we" have many backgrounds. Personally I was born into a family that was "Catholic" and was raised that way. My dad was proselytized into catholicism "for the sake of the kids" and I have left that set of beliefs. Now behold the meaning of the topic title from my view and let me pray that in the future you allow (suffer) me to be me. I will thank you for this beforehand and ask God to bless you in it even now. No, I don't care to argue specific verses but in the broad strokes I am very, very thankful for the Holy Spirit who is our Teacher and Comforter. I am certain this is true for all Christians who are called in truth.

You had stated:

When we focus our thoughts into the specifics of one scripture ("coming in His Name") and the meaning of that single phrase we miss the forest for the trees (so to speak). We are actually missing the trees by looking too closely at the pine-cones are we not? The topic title itself is: "Learning from the Holy Spirit or man?"

I don't follow. What does the title have to do with missing the forest for the trees or missing the trees for the pine-cones?

But that is the fallacy of the false dilemma, since another obvious choice is that the Holy Spirit works through others to bring us the truth. And I would argue that that is most often how it is done.

Its simple really .
1)There are things written plainly like you say: Turn the other cheek. Give and ye shall receive. Forgive others their sins as you would like to be forgiven, and many such teachings.

2) Then there are prophesies . They have two fulfillments. One is in the letter or physical. The other in the spirit, thus spiritual.

3) The physical happens to physical Israel and the spiritual happens to spiritual Israel, whom Paul describes in Romans fully.

4) We have the whole of the Old Testament that is physical history AND also God made it for a type and shadow for us to learn from. Here we need to study the types and God the Holy Spirit, with or without the help of godly men, will teach us: 1Co 10:11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example (Types); and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. These are hidden mostly and must be studied prayerfully.Pro 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

5) We are told in Revelation that God gave a "spirit" to the words in the Bible.That means, that sometimes they say more, than just in the plain text. We are also told that the reason for persecution would be when people come against this "spirit" which is the real testimony of Jesus.(Which mostly deals with Christ in us the hope of glory)Rev 19:10.......the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

So the Bible teaches that we need godly men to teach us.In that way, we are not being taught by MEN, but by God Himself, through His teachers. Teachers (godly teachers, not those who call themselves that these days for personal gain) will keep us on the right track and not mislead the people of God.

The reason for so many views, as we can see on any forum on the Web, is just because people have not been taught by godly teachers, but by man. That we are warned against. But alas, this is too late, it has happened already.

So the Holy Spirit AND godly men must teach.Eph 4:11 And he gave some........ teachers;

Cornelius,

Teachers are good gift from God. The are useful for a little while. They are third in line concerning purity of understanding. Teachers are themselves transgressors and cannot testify against themselves. A true prophet ( second in line concerning purity of understanding ) always testifies against himself. The prophet speaks concerning duty and symbolizes the gift of God in Jesus.

The apostle who God calls in Jesus, whom God has made this Jesus of Nazareth both Lord and Christ, he testifies against himself even more than the prophet, and through the apostle the mystery of Christ is unfolded in human language more fully, but not completely.

There is that revelation by the Spirit of Jesus ( like 7 thunders ) that cannot be written in human words. Any attempt to explain it in human language would be rebellion of the highest quality and become christianized sorcery and would take away from the warning of God that if we transgress we will die. In this present generation of our flesh and bones we always need to hear that warning. In the resurrection, wherein our flesh and bones will be regenerated, we will no longer need the warning, for sin will no longer reside in our body, our flesh, warring against our inward man.

In this present generation our consciences, our thoughts and mind and inward spirit and understanding are being regenerated in the image of Jesus' inward qualities, though we are never able to perform what we would, because of the vile body. All that will be saved from the body we have received through Eve is a burning ember from the golden altar of incense, a brand plucked from the burning by the angel with the tongs. We will be given a change of raiment.

We are given to testify to the blood and water whereby this gracious gift of God's imputation is given unto us and upon us. Then we will rest from our labors/die in the Lord and then our works will follow us.

God and Christ cannot be explained. We are given to be witnesses. Jesus said to the disciples that they are his witnesses; witnesses to Jesus' resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus answers all questions. The value of his death and the fellowship of his sufferings is unfolded through the resurrection.

Our Lord told Nicodemus: John 3:10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? Quoted from the OP regarding "teachers."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Hebrews 5:11-14 Of Whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (6:1) Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
That tells us that there are indeed things, many things, that need be taught but will be difficult because we are "dull of hearing." We are to reach a point, "the time," where we can be teachers and yet what is being taught? "The first principles of God"...baptism, salvation, etc. That is the milk and is considered being "unskilful" in teaching for it is the meat that takes us "on unto perfection."
  • 1 Corinthians 2:13-14 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
It is up to each of us to discern....We must listen, strive to see the spiritual meaning, not the letter for the "letter killeth" and test the fruit to see if it is man's wisdom or....God's wisdom.
  • Galatians 4:1-2 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
When the time comes then it is the Spirit that teaches....all things!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The "heir," the "child" being written of is the man child!

Joe, the verse you quoted tells us a great deal.....

  • John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things

I don't disagree. But when someone claims a "mystery" has been revealed to them or a very select few to support what one wants to believe because the other believer doesn't agree then that's going a bit too far.

"Alot of blaim goes to those tv preachers"
That's what these fellows are doing. "I know the mystery and you don't. Hear me! The mystery has been revealed to me!" not to you

When I hear someone claiming they know the "mystery" or the "hidden" things that others don't a red flag goes up pronto.

Paul is speaking of the reconciliation of Jew and Gentile. In that past God was revealed only to the Jews.

Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in My name, saying 'I am Christ;' and shall deceive many.

I believe coming in His name means....as a Christian.

I've heard that interpretation also. Actually, I think it was, "people will come who say that Jesus is the Christ but will mislead many." So, I suppose it could be like, the Catholics, JW's, Mormons etc. Lol.

I don't think there were punctuation marks in the original Greek. They were added later.
So it might have looked like:
"For many shall come in My name saying I am Christ and shall deceive many"

Of course the word Christ also means "anointed."

"For many shall come in My name saying I am anointed and shall deceive many"?

But, I'm a partial-preterist so, I think Jesus was talking about what happened prior to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70. ;) :D :lol :D

Dispensation or economy is far more congenial to the scope of the apostle’s declaration in this place; he wished to show them the economy of that mystery of bringing Jews and Gentiles to salvation by faith in Christ Jesus, which God from the beginning of the world had kept hidden in his own infinite mind, and did not think proper to reveal even when he projected the creation of the world, which had respect to the economy of human redemption. And although the world was made by Jesus Christ, the great Redeemer, yet at that period this revelation of the power of God, the design of saving men, whose fall infinite wisdom had foreseen, was not then revealed. This reading Griesbach has received into the text.
