Nothing More Than a Handshake Please

...there is a proper way in American culture to shake a woman's hand and it is different then that of a man...
I don't know how old you are, but this was once true. But it is not anymore, that I have seen.

I still take note of how dumb it seems to shake hands with a woman just like I do with a man (except for the 'who can squeeze the hardest' part, lol), but I know it's just the way it is now.

so we should kiss men? that will get this going real well:D

its say greet each other with a holy kiss. i do hope you know that the jews and french and arabs do that. by that i mean kiss each cheek. my dad mentioned it when he was in the temple and told me that jews and the french and arabs do that.

I said in a previous post that simply is not a part of American culture. But if it was we know, Biblically, it's okay to do.

Yes. And they do that by embracing each other, not by floating in the air and landing one on each other.

so jews that do in america well arent american? hmm dad is an american jew. i dont think its common today but then his day and in the temple probably very common. jewish males in isreal do greet that way. i can inquire with the orthodox jews i know. i know one but i wont see her for a few weeks.

I can count on one hand the number of blood Jews I have known. I suspect that is true for most of us(?) Their few number, and what they do culturally, hardly determines American culture. Wouldn't you agree?

And the only reason I did know them was because I lived in Florida for twenty years (NY transplants). Great people, don't get me wrong. They are among the people I do remember. Milly is probably my favorite. A beautiful, beautiful Christian Jew who I know delights the heart of God. Perhaps she has passed on to her inheritance by now. God bless her.

lol, im a blood jew and well they tend to congregate in miami, and nyc and well some say own the media. metro-goldwyn-mayer. that has a hebrew ring dont you think? i think well because jews keep the temple things in general save of late to themselves we dont see it but to say that judiasm hasnt influenced our culture is way off.

remember this theme song it has one-two-three in yiddish.

dad showed me that when i was old enough to get it.

Couldn't get the video to work...not even in youtube.

Really Jethro? do you need the video to hear the song? Really?
Lol, no, but I wanted to listen for the Jewish influences. And I see now it was my browser that was not letting it run.

I'm a product of the 70's. My dad was a TV design engineer. We had a TV in every room. We even had one of the first remote control TV's in the living room. Didn't work too good. It worked on ultrasonic sounds instead of infrared light.

Laverne and Shirley wasn't my favorite show, but my mom and dad loved it. They were big 'All in the Family' fans, too. Remember how controversial 'Happy Days' was when it first came out? Oh my how things have changed.

that's yiddish, superman being thought by jews has as hebrew name. kah-el.darkseid, also done up by a jew, when that man jack kirby died in the cartoon of that they held a funeral service for a charachter that resembled kirby and he was killed by darkseid. it was done in traditional orthodox hebrew. i took notice of that and googled.

leonard nimoy being a jew, borrowed from the hebrews in how vulcans acted and what they thought of family(most jewish) and the peace and long life(the vulcan idic) is actually the hand symbol for the letter shin and its used today by both jews and messianic jews and we hear it in the rcc as the aaronic blessing!

and his sons middle name is well what do you know. kah-el.

but theres more. bagels? lok etc? hmm seinfeild? yeah the soup nazi?thats likely a jewish deli. i noticed it when i watched that episode. hmm nah we didnt influence any american culture. nah. nope not a bit. new yorkers often say the word smuck. yiddish for i think idiot or fool.

It depends on the culture.

It's good to err on the side of caution.

But one CANNOT make judgments about other people's cultures from the basis of one's own personal preferences.

Fact is, Yasser Arafat, and the way he used to hug Presidents and Kings, wasn't doing so in isolation, but was expressing his culture.

Other people are the same, Christian or non-Christian.

Oh, I like to hug people I'm close friends with. But...there is a big difference between a hug and full body contact. That's a no no, and every woman has experienced it, I'm sure. Stay away from that guy, and, if the situation is right, let him know he's out of line.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for that...it is so true. :yes

Hi Mark,

In some countries you embrace once. In others, you put your head over one shoulder, then the other, then the first shoulder again.

(Roughly the equivalent in northern countries of smiling and nodding to the person...)

If you see a lady from South America having histrionics, and coming out with a long and loud stream of staccato Spanish, this may be roughly no more than the equivalent of a lady from northern countries murmuring, 'Oh, what a pity!' (I'm not saying this is either good or bad; but it's often just the way things are.)

In a melting pot culture, where folk from all over the world are found, I guess it makes sense to bear in mind that there are likely to be cultural differences from time to time.

Blessings.

I had this same problem with two men of the Church I use to attend. I am a hugging person, but they were more into my boobs touching them and would make remarks to me and I would just push them away and explain to them how wrong that was and when I did this they never said anything more to me. Sometimes you just have to be straight forward with people like this and set them in their place and let them know this is not pleasing to the Lord.
