Elderly nun sabotages nuclear weapons lab

An 84-year-old nun was sentenced to 35 months in prison Tuesday for breaking into a nuclear facility, her lawyer said.
In May, a federal jury in Knoxville, Tennessee, found Sister Megan Rice; Greg Boertje-Obed, 57; and Michael Walli, 63, guilty of destroying U.S. government property and causing more than $1,000 in damage to federal property.

It was not immediately clear what the sentences were for the two other peace activists.

The incident began before dawn on July 28, 2012, when the three cut through a chain-link fence surrounding the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

They then walked nearly a mile, cutting through three more fences and breaching what was supposed to be the most tightly secured uranium processing and storage facility in the country.
It was not until hours later that a guard finally confronted the activists who, by then, had hoisted banners, spray-painted messages and splattered human blood on a building that houses highly enriched uranium.

"They're at peace about this. They're peacemakers, and they knew that they risked this," Joe Quigley, attorney for Walli, told CNN affiliate WATE in May after their trial. "Nobody is happy to go jail, but they understand."

In response to the incident, Congress has held a series of hearings and issued security recommendations to the Department of Energy and its National Nuclear Security Administration, which runs Y-12 and seven other nuclear weapons sites.

In March, Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee that the Department of Energy had taken "several major actions ... to improve security" since the breach, including management changes and independent security reviews.

Which she is doing Kathi, quite willingly by the looks of it. I also wonder at the stiffness of the sentence for Only 1000 dollars damage. I think its a case of making an example of her because she showed how lax security was and because she dared to protest against a government site. Do others who commit such offences against the public sector face 3 years?
It also begs the question...................oh never mind...........

Just as the US led coalition forces brought peace to Iraq by dropping feathers and whoopee cushions on them you mean? or the "peace keeping forces:hysterical "in hot spots around the world who use nerf bullets while singing the chicken dance song? Police officers who are peace keepers using a kazoo and hand puppets to cajole criminals into surrender?

C'mon Kathi, do you think the plant managers would have welcomed them with open arms and listened to their voice and concerns if they'd gently knocked on the door? Sometimes the nefarious activities of government agencies around the world need to be exposed. Okay she damaged a fence, belonging to men, in this case the US GOVT so in effect belonging to US citizen tax payers (yeah.. right) of which she presumably is one.How does that compare with damaging God's creation by contaminating it with nuclear waste, the health implications of said contamination not to mention the scarring of the face of the planet God created for us with mine sites.

I am ever more confused by your response. What good is it going to do to damage property?Cutting through chain link fences? How about prayer. That would seem appropriate if they are peacemakers.

I would say that as a nun, she probably prayed before entering the facility. Just as David prayed before going into battle.
Kudos to her for her conviction (of beliefs....not crime :) )

Lewis, maybe she should have claimed to be a gay, illuminati, political refugee from planet Qaxar. They would have given her 6 months tops1

I think that they went way overboard with this sentence of 3 years for this Nun. She did not hurt anybody she was just making a statement. Yes she was wrong but you don't have to give her 3 years in jail at her age.

I guess the question is: does doing nothing send a signal that uranium facilities can be messed with at will by anyone? The authorities probably thought they were obliged to prosecute.

I for one wouldn't want to think for example that Pakistan's nuclear facilities could be messed with, just whenever religious enthusiasts felt like it.

Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Rom 13:5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
Rom 13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

Jesus paid taxes to Rome; a place far worse that America. Should this nun that doesn’t want to obey be sent to the fire as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were in Dan 3:23? At least these three men were obeying God; was she? :shrug

I agree reba.
And Eugene' sometimes you have to step out and do a act called interposition for the people, look at the Bible there were plenty of radicals in there. God does not expect us to be wimps about everything. Just like abortions some Christians have stepped up to the plate' and went to jail for it or executed. Now who is wrong them' or the earthly powers that be ?

So uranium facilities can be messed with whenever religious enthusiasts feel like it?

PS: Murray Waas's Book, The Trial of Lewis Libby, is all about whether a possible search for uranium by Saddam's Iraq involved the breaching of a CIA weapons expert's covert status. Uranium-related matters should not be trifled with.

Really farouk no one has said that. We here in the west have been blessed with freedom to demonstrate protest etc. we should do so with in the laws...or pay the penalty. Some laws needed a push or 2 to get changed. A war for another. I doubt he lady will do hard time i pray the Lord uses her with in the prison walls
