Bible Study Our Body/Our Spirit

Angel

Member
Are we 100% flesh, the body? (By this I mean are we only a body?)

Do we have a spirit? Not the Holy Spirit, but a Spirit in our bodies.

Does the spirit in our bodies affect our lives?

Can the spirit be affected by others?

Do we have access to our spirit?

I would appreciate simple replies. I don't want this to be a debating thread. Just hope some of you out there can answer :) Instead of printing Scripture please just mention the Chapter and Verse(s)

Thank you so much!

Paul describes as spirit, soul and body. 1 Thessalonians 5:23

There many references to a man's spirit as well as soul throuout scripture.

At physical death, the spirit separates from the body. The spirit immediately goes to be with Christ, but the body waits until the resurrection.

In one Star Trek TNG episode, Warf said after he dies he wouldn't care what happens to his body for it would be just an "empty husk" (or something like that). I don't think I would go that far, because God intends our spirits to be united with our bodies. But it is similar to the picture given in scripture. Paul speaks of our bodies as clothes for our spirits:

For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in Heaven. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our dwelling place out of Heaven, if indeed, being clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
2 Corinthians 5:1-4

Our spirit is more than a physical body could ever dream of being. Have you ever noticed when you are driving along, and you can sense other people's emotions? Not even looking at their faces, but really sensing how they feel. Or even walking past people, you can feel their emotion. That is who we are.

In the same way, let your light shine before men Matthew 5:16

Walk in the light.

I want to clarify the part "the body waits until the resurrection". As we all know, the body gradually becomes dust right after the person dies. (Genesis 3:19, Psalm 104:29) Our spirit which awaits on the Paradise will be changed into the shape of body when Jesus returns. (1 Corinthians 15:50-52)

As God breathed into Adam's nostrils the breath of life, man became a living being. It means we all have flesh (body) which is visible and spirit in it.

Reference to 1 Thessalonians 5:23 as JLB mentioned, in a body, there are a spirit and a soul (personality).
When the body is alive, the soul is attached to the body in order to express its intellect, emotions and will. When a person dies, the soul attaches to the spirit and the body returns to the ground. Soul is actually the personality of a man (intellect, emotion and will).
Our spirit is the temple of God, so the demon cannot enter it. However, demon seduces or deceives our soul (personality or thinking).
If our thinking is under the shadow of devil, it hinders God's word and so on.
If we do not receive God's provision of word and grace for a long time, our spirit can be affected.

Hi Angel,

Gen 2:7 says that God created man from the dust of the ground and breathed into him the breath/spirit of life. God also said to Adam, 'dust you are and to dust you shall return.' This show us that man is dust or of the elements of the earth. There is a spirit in man, it is the breath/spirit of life, however, it is not man but rather God's breath/spirit which gives us life.

I think that the NT gives us further revelation of things not completely understood from the OT scriptures. I believe that Paul clearly says we are body, soul, and spirit. I Thess. 5:23

Bullseye, sister! I agree. Our spirit-man has senses just like the flesh body. At times like you describe, these are our spiritual senses working for us. Some call it intuition, others may dismiss it as spooky stuff or just their imagination. Is the imagination one of our spiritual senses?

Hebrews seems to say that we are to exercise these senses and use them.

Hebrews 5:14
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil./(KJV)

I'll stop here for brevity, as requested. :salute

HI Deb,

Do you think further revelation would contradict what God has already revealed? Body, soul, and spirit, are used in the OT also and they are defined a certain way. I would expect further revelation to build on not contradict what God has already revealed.

I agree sister. I believe that we are clearly triune beings, just like God. We were created in his image, He is a trinity, Father-Son-Holy Spirit, and we are body-soul-spirit.

Used to be spirit-soul-body, before the fall.

I am presuming that for purposes of discussion, that the flesh body is a given. We can see it and test it's existence, OW! ok pinches hurt. Anyway, here's another reference speaking of spirit and soul in the context of a man...

Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart./(KJV)

This verse is interesting. Dare I ask in this thread what, dividing asunder of soul and spirit means? Or would that be too far off topic?

The spirit gives life and according to Scriptures a soul is a living being. Therefore I would submit that to be able to divide soul and spirit is to take life.

I'm not sure they do contradict.
What is your understanding of what Paul said?

"Mr. Wesley's note on this verse is expressed with his usual precision and accuracy: -
"For the word of God - preached, Hebrews 4:2, and armed with threatenings, Hebrews 4:3, is living and powerful - attended with the power of the living God, and conveying either life or death to the hearers; sharper than any two-edged sword - penetrating the heart more than this does the body; piercing quite through, and laying open, the soul and spirit, joints and marrow - the inmost recesses of the mind, which the apostle beautifully and strongly expresses by this heap of figurative words; and is a discerner, not only of the thoughts, but also of the intentions.""

Here's a link to Adam Clark's Commentary on this verse. It also links to 1 Thess. 5:23. I had never looked to see what he had said about these verses until today. I was pleasantly surprised.

What is your understanding of what Paul said?

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1Th 5:23 NKJ)

I understand that a soul consists of a body and a spirit/breath. So, Paul's statement would indicate to me that he is denoting the entirety of a person, their entire being. He says, "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely." The body, soul, and spirit would denote the complete person.

So you don't believe we have another part of us that makes us different than all of God's other created animals? I believe scripture says they also are living souls.
