Show me Scripture that says Scripture is the ultimate authority lmao
First, it goes without saying, otherwise the leaders the Church, however that is defined, could go against Scripture, right? Isn't that precisely what we've seen in the CC? Second, Paul's statements in Gal. 1:6-9 make it pretty clear that he thinks Scripture, that which he and the apostles had already taught, based also on the OT, was the standard:
Gal 1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—
Gal 1:7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
Gal 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. (ESV)
What is the standard Paul gives here? Apostolic authority? No. The Church? No. Angels? No. It's Scripture—that which was already taught, which no apostle could change. Paul could not come back and teach something different, nor could Peter or any of the other apostles. In other words, Paul and the rest of the apostles are held to the standard of Scripture--sola scriptura--as the final and infallible authority.
Because the Scripture doesn't say anything resembling 'ignore the Church, follow Scripture alone'
Is this a claim anyone is actually making or is this a straw man? Sola scriptura doesn't mean Scripture alone is our authority, as is commonly believed, but rather that Scripture is the ultimate and only infallible authority.
