I can’t wake up in the morning no matter how hard I try the devil is turning me into a lazy slob. He knows what makes me depressed.

What should I do? I’ve tried praying but nothing is helping, any help is appreciated.

When I was younger and had moved out of my parents' home I got into a trap of sleeping in every day. My job was a 21-day shift rotation - 7 afternoon shifts followed by 7 days followed by 7 midnights. When I was working the afternoon shift I worked from 3:00pm to 11:00pm. I'd get home from work, go to bed, and sleep in until 10:00 or later in the morning.

I began to realize that I was getting up in the morning, packing a lunch and then going to work. I felt like I was sleeping my life away and it was not a life I wanted, and I always seemed to feel lazy or drowsy, so I decided to make changes. At first, I set an alarm every day for 8:00am and forced myself to get up. It didn't take long to get used to that so I then set it for 7:00. I began to feel more satisfied and productive even if I didn't do anything more than have a cup of coffee and listen to the birds chirp. I also noticed that I felt more energetic. Essentially, I trained myself to get up in the morning.

To this day, I am an early riser, except during the winter months when it is dark most of the time. So, when I retired, I took on a volunteer position with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) and committed to reporting daily precipitation at 7:00 every morning so I set an alarm to be sure I'm up. Most days I don't need the alarm, particularly during the summer months as I'm usually waking up as daylight breaks so in June that can be as early as 4:30am. I do not like sleeping in late. It feels like I'm sleeping my life away.

If you are struggling to get up even with an alarm set.
May I suggest setting a second alarm clock to go off 15 minutes later, but place this on the other side of the room, ensure the alarm is loud and continuous.

I'm curious why you believe that the devil is the one that is destroying your life? The devil certainly does tempt us, just as he did Eve, but Eve had to reach out and take the fruit and eat of it. Just as the devil tempted Jesus, but he didn't bite (pun intended).

What do you mean you can't wake up in the morning? Do you mean you don't get up from bed until after midday? Or do you mean you'd like to get up earlier in the morning than you do but you just won't?

The devil isn't turning you into a lazy slob. No, he just works with what you give him, exaggerating selfish attitudes and desires he sees are present in you in order to bring you into sin.

Are you a child of God, a born-again Christian? I ask because, if you are, you've no reason to be depressed. Sad, perhaps, at times, if you've lost a loved one, or a beloved pet or job, or are in pain. But a chronic state of discontentment and unhappiness is a strange condition for a person in whom God dwells and who will fill that person with all the good things that He is, if they interact with Him in the way He says to do. Are you such a person? Has God's Spirit come to dwell within you?

God hears the prayers of righteous people, the prayers of those who love Him and are living in constant submission to His will and way. All others are in sinful rebellion to Him and, as such, are opposed by God. To the prayers of these unholy people God has His fingers in His ears.

2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.

Are you a born-again child of God? I ask because, if you are, you have the Holy Spirit inside of you. His presence in you is what makes you "born-again" and God's child. He will work in you, over time, making you a holy, wise, self-controlled, loving person. But the Bible says the Holy Spirit only does this as we submit to his control throughout every day. God's way, then, for you to cease to be a lazy person is to come under His - that is, the Holy Spirit's - control who will, as you persist in being a "living sacrifice" to God, free you from yourself and all the bad stuff that comes from you.

I hope that this comment doesn't offend, but you sound like you're trying to use the devil as a scapegoat for your own abilities and desires that you are struggling with in your life. And I would repeat what Tenchi said, maybe the devil feels so strong in your life because God isn't. BTW I'd like to hear some more specifics as to why this issue of getting up in the morning is such a burden to you. You mention depression and, while I wholly agree that depression can be a problem temporarily for a believer, it certainly shouldn't be the defining issue. If you're depressed and that's why you don't want to roll out of bed at whatever you feel is an acceptable time, then what are you depressed about, and you should likely find the answer to that problem and leave the devil out of it.

Here are the attributes of one who is filled with the Spirit. One who has been born again through faith in Jesus and indwelling Holy Spirit that then fills a believer. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Pay very, very close attention to that last one. It is often the most important one for a believer to hold to. Notice also that it doesn't include depression.

So, if you are struggling with depression, then work on that and give up this scapegoat case that it's the devil doing it. It may likely be your own spirit acting without the Holy Spirit. The devil merely tempts us. He puts things in our way, just as he did with Jesus, but he can't make us do what we aren't already inclined to do. If you struggle with sexual immorality and you walk down some street of strip clubs and honkytonk bars, you can either hold your head up and walk on by... or you can direct your feet to go in. When you turn to accept sin, that's on you.

That was one of the first lessons of the Scriptures that God gave us through His words to Cain. Sin is crouching at the door... we must overcome it.

May I suggest setting a second alarm clock to go off 15 minutes later, but place this on the other side of the room, ensure the alarm is loud and continuous.

Yes, placing the alarm clock so that you have to get out of bed to shut it off can be extremely helpful.

We like to blame Satan for many things wrong in our lives but in all reality it's not Satan, but our own self to blame by not submitting to God and putting on the full armor of God. If you are truly a child of God by His grace through faith that is Christ Jesus and the Spiritual rebirth indwelled with the Holy Spirit, John 3:5-7; Romans 10:9-10, then you have the power and authority through God's grace to resist the Devil and he must flee.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
