Re: Is it supposedly 'liberal' to let your son pierce his ears?

DarkHorseRising: I do think that for under 18s it's the parent's call, but otherwise I don't see much of a valid argument against, I agree.
Whether he is taken to the mall to have them clicked in has nothing to do with being supposedly 'liberal' or not.

Being underage to consent to something IS a valid argument against :P

DarkHorseRising: ...which is what I meant by, it's the parent's call for under 18s, or 16, in some states. What I was referring to previously was that if a parent decides to allow it, however, it's nothing to do with being supposedly 'liberal' or whatever.

Yup, I was agreeing with you, dude.

Re: Is it supposedly 'liberal' to let your son pierce his ears?

not really.
i meant its something my mom cares a lot about she doesnt want me to get it.
my dad on the other hand doesnt care and hes indifferent to it.

but yes i will have to wait until im 18

a:

If it's what you want to do, I hope you'll manage to do it, but you might need to be patient for a while, until you hit 18.

Re: Is it supposedly 'liberal' to let your son pierce his ears?

it was that way in the south and in some parts of my state and town it still is! a left pierced ear means that you are of the LEFT persuasion(gay)

Farouk,

have not thought of guy ear piercing as liberal or conservative. When i was your age it was considered rebellious. :D Or over the equator thing :) I was your age a million years ago.....

It is just personal choice. The nice simple diamond looks good on most people

i HATE the gauges

reba:

Yes, it does.

(You mean, specifically on men, it does?)

Re: Is it supposedly 'liberal' to let your son pierce his ears?

I never thought of it as "liberal"...

Growing up just after Reba, I always associated pierced ears with ether sailors, bikers or homosexuals.

Re: Is it supposedly 'liberal' to let your son pierce his ears?

Growing up pentecostal in the 50s almost everything was sin.... Ear piercing was a SIN so the ladies wore clipons... Some how lipstick was a sin and RED lip stick was worser sin.

Praise God for the liberty in Christ!

:toofunny Yeah, We definitely didn't grow up/growing up in the same era! (Im not refering to the year difference, But customs!) Thats strange. You look and can see how similar and how much the same it really is. Then you look at that and think of them as radically different.

J:

Most males that have it done, do both ears, so what you say really doesn't apply now very much, if at all.

Re: Is it supposedly 'liberal' to let your son pierce his ears?

I don't think a man getting a piercing can be construed as an indication of that person's political ideology, as it is acceptable these days for men to have piercings. Like reba stated, gauge piercings are awful and scar your ears for life. I had a friend who worked at Borders (when they still existed), and he had gauge piercings in his ears. He eventually took them out and had to get his earlobes stitched back together. I asked him why he had them removed, and he said, "I wanted to get a real job." My friend ended up becoming an radiology technician. While piercings are socially acceptable now, to a degree, there are still long-term professional consequences for men who have them. I suppose you could say that piercings, on the scale of socially liberal or conservative, would be socially moderate.

Ty for the comments, and you are right that with gauges it can sometimes be tricky in a professional field. A lady with gauges who teachers did tell me that what she does when teaching is simply covers her ears with her hair, and they're not really big gauges anyway, but I guess that not everyone has that strategy as an option, right?

But specifically for young wanting ear piercings, it IS very widespread (and maybe even a few years ago it was even more popular, I don't know.) Some people of a conservative outlook might say that it's somehow associated with rebellion if an adolescent young man wants pierce his ears, but actually it's very possible that his dad has ear piercings himself, and his mom and grandmother have multiples pierced in their ears, so I'm not sure about the supposed 'rebellion' syndrome, let alone any political affiliation aspect, either. Does this make sense to you?

Blessings.

I agree that a piercing is not indicative of any political affiliation. Also, I think in that nowadays a piercing on a man is not really considered rebellious. How can something be culturally rebellious if so many people get it done? It's kind of like tattoos; they were once considered a symbol of rebellion, but now so many people have them.

This is undoubtedly true and there seems to be a wide measure of agreement here among the posters on this thread.

Well, exactly. If a young man under 18 is taken to have his ears pierced, it's hardly a case of the young man rebelling against his parents! It simply means that he and they probably think it's a nice thing to do.

Exactly, exactly! :clap I mean, what about the quiet pastor's daughter going to college or the earnest young man who joins the military and who want to get a Bible ref. tattoo as a witness? or even a grandmother inking the initials of her first grandchild? How is this culturally rebelling against a very widespread trend?

I mean, if you wanted a nice faith related tattoo or whatever it may be, you wouldn't feel it was cultural rebellion, would you?

Personally, I would never get a tattoo. But no, I would not feel it was cultural rebellion. :D

elizabethbraddock:

I guess this was a hypothetical question about a tatt, but, yes, with sooooo many doing it it's hardly cultural rebellion.

I mean, to be strictly more on-topic, if you had a son, taking him to have his ears pierced wouldn't be cultural rebellion either, would it?

Blessings.

No, I don't think it would be. I would warn him before he got it about the professional repercussions of getting one, but if he still wanted it, I guess I would relent. No gauges, though. lol
