satan; the ruling god of this word.

Jesus said satan was the ruler of this world.

Joh 14:30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me,

Paul said satan was the god of this world.

2Co 4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

How does satan rule and blind people to the Gospel ?

With distraction. Religion being the ace trump. I think in this day and age satan, has done a great job with believers and unbelievers alike with trying to get us to "make this a better place to live." His world. He has got us so busy at "cleaning up his world" and making it a better place that we have forgotten to be a light for the individual caught up in this world.

I love this statement by L S Chafer.

This world is an anesthetic to the lost and dying man. We are not called to rid this world of the anesthetic, we are called to offer a light to the lost and dying man.

The biblical idea that Satan is the God of this world is to say that he is the natural influence in the hearts and minds of all people in the world.

This does not mean that the devil rules sovereignly in the world, but the world as we are engaged in it by own own nature, is in line with the nature of the devil, or evil.

So, it is not difficult for Satan to blind anyone to the Gospel. We are born by nature blind to the Gospel, or out of relationship with God. It is God who reigns sovereign, and it is God through Jesus Christ who connects anyone two a relationship with Him, who communicates and makes clear His love for us.

Lucifer’s name meant light-bearer when he was created as he was a reflection of Gods brightness as one who had favor in the Lord. God changed his name to Satan, which means adversary, after he fell from heaven. God changed many names from one to another in the Bible to reflect his glory through them as a nation. Lucifer was created perfect in all his ways with beauty, wisdom and freewill. God placed him as the guardian or protector over the throne of God in heaven. He was entrusted with many possessions and found much favor in the Lord.

God created the earth and saw that it was good and he took Lucifer from GodsHolyMountain and set him over the Garden of Eden as a covering cherub to watch over and enjoy all that was of God. As Lucifer was set in the garden iniquity was soon found in him as he defiled Gods sanctuary through pride in his own beauty and wisdom as he wanted all that was of Gods here on earth to be his own and iniquity soon filled his heart as he tried to make his throne above the angels and be God. Because iniquity was found in him God cast him and those angels who chose to follow him out of his holy mountain and cast them all down to earth to be trampled of all nations. The only reference in scripture that denotes there being one third of the angels falling with Satan is in Revelation 12:9. (Ref: Read Ezekiel Chapter 28 Prince of Tyrus)

Revelation 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Ezekiel 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Ezekiel 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Ezekiel 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Ezekiel 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Ezekiel 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Isaiah 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Isaiah 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Isaiah 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Satan was cast down to the earth and became the ruler of iniquity over it before the creation of man which is why he had the power and right to give the kingdoms of the world over to Christ. Satan corrupted the nations until there was no righteous person found except Noah. Even after Satan was cast down to the ground he still vowed that he would ascend back into heaven and take his place on the throne and be like the most high.

Remember, Satan is a spirit and not flesh and blood so when he was cut down to the ground it was not literal, but symbolic that his so called kingdom would be that of a lesser magnitude than Gods kingdom. Satan is the total opposite of the love that God represents so whatever good that God does Satan does the opposite. For instance we know that the greatest commandment of God is to love and our commission is to take his word out into the world. Our service is to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, visit the sick and those in prison. Prison can be a literal prison or those who are imprisoned in mind by their own devastations of life circumstances that engulfs them. Since Satan is known as the god of this world and the prince of the powers of the air he has access to the throne of God to accuse the saints of God as Jesus makes intercession for them. Satan has no authority in heaven as he lost that privilege, but was cut down to earth and through his hatred and anger of God now uses his deceit to separate man from God by stealing the word of God from them thus stealing their faith in God.

2Corinthians 4:4 in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night

How does satan rule and blind people to the Gospel ?

Satan rules by deception. He plays on the senses. He entices through the lusts of the flesh.

Being on the inside looking out at the world, it's easy to recognize the works of the devil. But when he's in the pulpit, it's a different story. When he attacks himself with a twisted watered down version of the truth, it becomes a little more difficult to distinguish the wheat from the tare.

Jude 1
4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 2
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.

2 Corinthians 11
12 But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast.
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

Some people have become so accustomed to the lies that they'll admit there's no such thing as a perfect church, and then they'll turn around and willingly walk straight through the doors of that imperfect institution. There are over 30,000 separate christian denominations. Each with their own version of Christ crucified.

1 Corinthians 1
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Satan has taken up residence and rules from within our own ranks.

Great reply Gary and I just want to add a little more to what you have already posted.

Satan is a counterfeiter with his own church, trinity, doctrine and supernatural powers. He is an imitator of God in every way, but his ways are that of an evil purpose to separate man from the love of God as he uses those in his ministry to deceive even the very elect of God. Many people are being deceived and drawn into these type of ministries and occults because they lack the knowledge of Gods word and believe the blasphemies that come out of mans mouth for their words sound good to the ear, but deceives the very soul of a person by drawing them away from all truths of the word of God. Satan can go as far as raising the dead, healing the sick and giving materialistic things to those in need, but the difference here is that the things he performs are only temporal to deceive and draw others into his evil kingdom that will perish in the lake of fire that is made for him and his demons.

Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
Hosea 4:7 as they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

I would agree with most of the ways that others have mentioned above.

satan uses people to hurt each other. I think this is especially effective when he can wound the heart of a young child. It can distort their whole view of the world, of what a father is like, of what is right and wrong, etc.

Cannot!
Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Rom 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

How could Satan overpower and bind the Holy Spirit within Jesus' Church?

The Holy Spirit resides within the heart of an individual, not the actual building. Satan doesn't need to overpower and bind the Holy Spirit. He just needs the individual to accept his message and the Holy Spirit will leave on His own accord.

How could Satan overpower and bind the Holy Spirit within Jesus' Church?

satan can hinder the Church but not bind.

1Th 2:17-18 But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, (18) because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us.

How specifically do you think satan "uses" people ? I mean if we believe he is a tangible presence in the world how does this work. Are he, and his devils, here physically in human form or does he enter the mind of a person etc ? How does he entice us ?

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

He can't blind those who have truth given them by the Holy Spirit that dwells in them, John 14:26. Many give lip service to the Lord, but have not the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. There are many that sit in Churches every Sunday thinking if they are a good person and go to Church they will go to Heaven, but their eternal life will be that of damnation being separated from the love of God forever for they never were Spiritually born again, John 3:3-7.

Romans 8:6 for to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Romans 8:7 because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Most of the time I think it is through temptations. Just as he did Jesus. Scripture says Jesus was tempted as we are so He knows.
But I'm not a big satan tempted me type person. I can do that all on my own, thank you very much.

But I do think there are times when he does throw a wrench in things, puts up road blocks, and uses people to do these things.
So if one is sure that God has told them to do something, go somewhere, or speak with someone and things keep happening to keep us from doing that, I think one could determine that it might be inference from the other side that needs to be overcome.

One of the most powerful weapons satan has against man is to convince man that he doesn't really exist or that he has no power at all.
The scriptures tell us something different.

Now that is a good question. from where I am at in my walk He and His demons can posses a unbeliever, and then tangibly influence a believer from there. The thing that creeps me out the most is that it is for the most part "nice looking" to the carnal, human mind. Doing "good things" Helping "Humanity" making this planet a nicer and better place. And our flesh will not let it happen. And this is were satan hates us. He most desperately wants this place(world) to work! Just without God. He wants to say to God,"See, I didn't need you, I can do this all on My own." And satan can't control our flesh even if he "wants us all to get along" Or "co-exist"

In all reality, satan wants this world to work, he wants us all to get along and worship him. And He hates us because he can't control us. Ultimately He wants to be like the most High. And by that he wants to make this world work, just without God. Socialism, communism is satanic. Socialism is not overt sinning and sounds "good" to a lot of folks. However it is evil in the eyes of the Lord.[/quote]

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Satan does this by tricking Christians to become Benedict Arnolds to their kingdom, the kingdom of God. The scripture says flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. Our thoughts must align with God words...not the world. When this happens the kingdoms become in conflict by mixing grace and law.

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 NLT

It is somewhat mind boggling to imagine the unbelievably evil satan as once one of God's 'right hand' angels.
