There seems to be different world views on this. Here's what I currently work off of:

HELL: a convenient general term that can cover several different places in the afterlife, all uncomfortable.

SHEOL/HADES: Sheol is Hebrew, Hades is Greek for the current abode of the damned. It is a place of conscious torment and torture. There are cells, cubicles, torture rooms, and a "small" lake of fire (see Gehenna below). Originally constructed only for Satan and his minions, it has come to be "dual-purposed" for the internment of unsaved human beings.

TARTARUS: the lower "basement" of Sheol, contains torment of such magnitude it is beyond normal human comprehension. Interred are the worse of the demons, and...? (Rumored to be so bad as to cause instant insanity if even revealed to a human being.)

GEHENNA: named after a burning refuge dump near Jerusalem, this is the "big" Lake of Fire into which all of Sheol and its contents will be dumped post Judgment. Not sure if sentient beings will remain sentient, or be consumed beyond consciousness.

I know others have markedly differing ideas on Hell's definitions and architecture. This is a working model for me, and I'm perfectly willing to hear your ideas.

Hell-The everlasting bottless pit of torture and fire where unbelievers go after they have been judged at the Great White Throne judgment
Sheol/Hades-Sheol is the OT word for Hades.Hades is the NT word for Sheol where the unbelievers go temporarily while waiting their Great White Throne judgment.
Tartarus- Another word for Hell.
Gehenna-Another word for hell

Heaven is better than paradise, but that doesn't make paradise bad.
I thought they were the same.Paradise is the place that believers went before Christ was crucifed. Then Jesus came to them and took them to heaven with Him.

correction, tarturus is a greek word for the lowest level of sheol, its called avadon in Hebrew.

Do you think the people currently in Sheol are suffering?

no gan eden is NOT the eternal state. its the idea of a temporay place of rest till the end of creation in jewish thought. I know Christians who believe the same.

Isn't that what I said?
not really. you said for sheol. using a greek term to describe sheol is akin to saying that the jews spoke greek. they didn't if you said that tarturus is in hades per the bible. which well tartaroo is but not tarturus since that is greek myths and its found in no bible words that I know that its by itself. being in torment if I recall is from the word tartaroo(which is the word to torment but not the place of torment

Sheol is the OT name for Hades so yes they are suffering alot in Hades right now. They may be shrouded in darkness and suffering unending regret and abandonment. There memories and feelings are fully intact.Images of their life on earth could come back to haunt them. For them death is far worse than they had ever imagined.
I saw this recently on the computer that someone had written on their tombstone:
Pause,stranger,when you pass me by
As you are now,so once was I
As I am now,so you will be
So prepare for death and follow me

an unknown passerby read these words and underneith scratched his reply:

To follow you I'm not content
Until I know which way you went

I believe Hades is the grave and that's it. I believe that is how Scripture portrays it. I'm not sure where you got the definition of Tartarus, I've not heard that.

Tartarus is a Greek word translated as hell
underworld, where the gods locked up their enemies. It gradually came to mean the entire underworld. As such it was the opposite of Elysium, where happy souls lived after death. In some accounts Tartarus was one of the personified elements of the world, along with Gaea (Earth) and others. According to those accounts, Tartarus and Gaea produced the monster Typhon. Compare Hades.

So what if I say Tartarus is the lowest part of Hades?

Well,Hades and hell are two different places.
I know you use the terms differently from me. I think you use Hell to indicate the final Lake of Fire, which I call Gehenna. I use "Hell" as a generic term that can mean Sheol, Hades, or Gehenna.

Ya,Hell and Gehenna are the same place. But yes,we differ because you think Sheol/Hades and hell are the same place.

Sometimes I think of it as Hell 1 and Hell 2.
