Space Travel

A comment in another thread sparked my interest on this topic, so instead of derailing that one I thought I would make one of my own.

So, what are your thoughts on space travel. Will we ever get to a place, technologically speaking, where we will be able to travel to, say, another solar system?

No, unless some break though that occurs or discover that rips apart modern concepts of physics. anti-matter isn't feasible, nor is fussion reaction as both take more energy to start then they return.

Thank you for not ripping me apart :D lol....i think its like this there are so many things nasa keeps from us about things they work on and there progress. I think its possible but not for a long time im sure n i dont think its going to be stargate or anything but something maybe like a plane possibly :)

In all honesty, I believe Christ will return and setup His Kingdom before we get that advanced. I believe we are living in the End Times via the rebirth of Israel, the occupation of Jerusalem since 1967. The knowledge explosion of Daniel and many more current happenings around the world. Truly I believe we are the last generation. Space travel would be something I could see in maybe another hundred years, and it will be on the other side of eternity!

God Bless

I think perhaps in 2 generations we should see space travel. It won't be like Star Trek, but we'll have made it to Mars and back by then (not just a one way trip)

Not another solar system, not ever. The closest star is over 4 LIGHT YEARS away, and there is nothing there to see but three stars orbiting one another at at least one earth-sized planet that is SCORCHINGLY hot.

The problems with travel at even a considerable FRACTION of light speed are almost too numerous to mention, and even then, it is still impractical to start a journey you KNOW will be longer than a human lifetime.

Belief in travel to other stars makes good fiction, but it is not at all realistic. Sure, it is good for us to dream, try and imagine. But even if we could do 1/1oth the speed of light, you are talking a 40 year trip that won't be survivable anyway.

So, you don't think we will be able to build something that will be able to approach the speed of light. Though with that the travel time to the closest star system would be four years, but that could be doable, if they find something in that other system to make the trip worth while.

Not at all.

1) The energy requirements are beyond astronomical.
2) Protection of the ship is impossible - think of the energy you are handling if a SPEC of dust or worse, small meteorite, impacts the ship at that speed.
3) Navigation is impossible - you have no way of "looking" outside and figuring out where you are or where you are going.

Light speed travel and NEAR light speed travel are for those who do not understand math. (Or physics.)

Of course, you COULD invoke "wormholes" and "warp drive" (where the ship does not move, you simply bend space-time around you) and you MIGHT be able to successfully shoot holes in my argument.
Good luck building THAT foundation!

Well now you are just being ridiculous. ;)

But seriously, obviously we do not have the technology to make a lightweight material that would be strong enough to withstand that kind of possible impact, but whose to say someone might come up with an alloy (adamantium?) that would?

Of course this all depends on whether or not God would want us to be able to travel to other systems, before He decides to bring everything to an end.

If such space travel happens... going to a different solar system, it won't be because we build something capable of going the speed of light.

If we can unlock the mysteries of the space-time continuum... perhaps learning to "wrinkle time" as L'Engle put it, then all things are possible. And, with God... all things are possible. If He chooses to allow us to learn these mysteries, then it might very well be done.

Years ago, when I worked at the day-care, I read the Chronicles of Narnia to the after-school kids. A discussion of whether or not we will ever be able to travel to other solar systems and planets came up. One 10 year old boy, by the name of Matt, solemnly told the other kids something I remember word for word, 25 years later. He said, "God will never allow us to travel to other planets in His creation. We have too much sin on this earth. If we go to other places in His universe, we'll spread it, like a sickness." Matt was a very smart little boy.

if they find something in that other system to make the trip worth while.

To my own way of thinking, if we do develop the capability, then just doing it is worth enough in of itself. Sort of like climbing a mountain... why? Because it's there.

I am curious and I always think of IONIC propulsion for some reason, and the/any undiscovered aspect of that formulae. In truth however I ask; "Why are we trying to escape the confines of a perfect world he created for us?!" I mean after all if we would learn to appreciate it and not abuse it then it affords us everything we need....sustains and maintains us and gives us beauty magnified.

Catching that bass or northern, finding that precipice that you look out over a grand valley, smelling lilacs as they bloom, watching all the birds as they fly from roost to roost and hear their songs, sharing a sunset with a special person, listening to the ocean waves as you stand on a shoreline or surf, taking a scenic drive in the Rockies or Colorado mountains, seeing fields of sunflowers or grass swaying in the evening breeze, etc. There is so much to appreciate here on earth and it is for the most part safe and secure in the heavenly father's will and grace. With all the effort spent on space exploration we could of utilized that effort to solve many of the reoccurring issues plaguing us here on the world of which was granted to us by GOD; GOD of Abraham; GOD of Moses; GOD our creator.

Let me remind you I am still curious and find it interesting; however the earth needs our attention and it's inhabitants more so than ever.

Praise be to GOD the heavenly father and his son lord JESUS CHRIST forever>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I don't see men leaving the eath to colonise any planet in the solar system happening within my lifetime. I don't see that space travel or exploration is a sin.

As far as space travel is concerned I personally believe we don't take it seriously enough. We live on a planet with finite resources, our sun has a finite life span, and even if it did not, our population keeps growing as we are living longer and healthier lives which will lead to this world being overcrowded. With all that in mind, we had BETTER make it a priority to become a space-faring race if we are to survive in this universe as a species.
