It’s my understanding that in order to maintain self-identification, Scripture uses admonitions, which are many such as this passage, for since believers yet possess the “old man,” contrasts such as this is for discerning the “intents of the heart” (Heb 4:12). The contrasts between the old man and the new man need to be kept in check so that we will avoid never being found to have the same feelings of rebellion and unbelief as before rebirth. I believe it's a right for all to know another's intents, "for the tree is known by his fruit" (Mat 12:33).
It’s common knowledge that there are only two types of those professing to be in Christ: those who have truly received Him, and those who have not, both of which will eventually become unavoidably manifested. Those reborn will always continue to desire and choose God’s “good pleasure” (Phl 2:13); and those never reborn will not remain in their profession, because the sin nature (“old man”) will inevitably draw away the unregenerate ones from their profession.
