The Derailing Thread

After the hit I took from bills this pay period I am SUPER thankful to be working overtime today.
I took out a 401K loan - I don't get overtime, so paychecks (which are electronic) are missing almost 25% of what was there before.

It was fun to finance something with MY money, but I'll be happy when, in three more paydays, I am out of debt to myself. :o

I'm going outside to change oil in my Ranger. (This will cost $37, less than half what it costs for the car....) :)

In the recent 3 years, China has used as much cement as the US used during the entire 20th century. China can produce more steel than all of the rest of the world put together.

I visited Nucor Steel in Northern Alabama three years ago to look at their radio system. Sure was a fascinating and hi-tech place. They are so big, they use 1/3 of the output of a nuclear reactor when in full operation - that is a LOT of power.

I asked about their concern about the Chinese. The guy told me that the Chinese were no threat to THEM, as the quality of the steel produced in China was "... on the level of quality we produced in 1945, demanding customers won't accept that product, at any price."

I was surprised to hear that from him, and told him so. He said he had no fear about imported steel, that they make the best product and there were enough customers who demanded quality to keep them busy.

Access to natural resources is what wins wars.
China is the last nation in God's rat maze of human activities to decide they want to own and control the world. Russia is probably the next one.

Nucor benefits from ease of shipping too. They are closer to their customers. Still, executives at a now closed steel company also told me that their superior quality would rescue them. Didn't happen.

Japan tried to conquer an empire to obtain resources, once Perry convinced them that defense was impossible without them. Japan's strategy had no chance though, as they never developed significant anti sub capability. Thus Japan could not ship resources from their empire to Honshu. We simply out built them, as we produced as much GDP as the rest of the world put together at the time..

China has lots of indigenous resources, and nearby Russia has vast Siberian resources. China fought the US to a standstill in Korea, and won in Vietnam when they were way behind in GDP. Now they are #1 in GDP (PPP), and are quite formidable.

That toy car moving down a scenic road was amazing.

I own rather than rent, but I notice how my young nephew struggles with rent and student loans. Inflation is out of control.

I noticed company greed went into high gear right after the 2008 recession. Seems counter-intuitive but that's what happened. Within just 2 or 3 years I noticed prices at Lowe's sometimes doubled. I'm not exaggerating. From what I gather corporations started stock piling money. Literally.
