The Derailing Thread

I forget, are they fighting for dragon balls? And now that I think of it, what does the Z mean in dragon ball z?
Funny story. Toriyama wanted to call the second anime Dragon Ball Z to emphasize that that anime would be the end of the story.
...and then came GT and Super.

(I have mixed feelings on Super right now. I don't like the way they're handling Goku. He's supposed to be the main character and it feels like he's been reduced down to two traits: fighting and being an idiot. When he was a bit more complex than that before. Also the animation and writing is inconsistent in quality in general.)

GT and Super are there because Dragon Ball sells, I guess. GT was from the '90s, and then they stopped. Then in 2008 they made a short OVA, and then a couple years later another movie (Battle of Gods). The movie was popular, so they made another movie (Resurrection F). Then they made Super. (Imo Battle of Gods and Resurrection F were pretty good. I have Res F on DVD. BoG was probably the better of the two though.)

There are several arcs in Dragon Ball as a whole. The beginning starts with them searching for the dragon balls and that's how Bulma finds a 12 year old Goku. (The art style makes him look way younger honestly.) Then other things happen and the story gets more involved.

GT is generally considered non-canon by the fanbase, especially since Toriyama (the author of the manga) contributed nothing to the writing. (He did do the character designs, since everyone is way older in GT.)
Toriyama is giving basic ideas for the writing of Super, though from what he said in a recent interview he isn't much more involved than that and the anime team basically takes his ideas and writes based off those. So it's arguable how canon Super could be considered. (It hasn't been feeling like something Toriyama wrote, from what I've seen of his work. But that's my opinion.)

That's complicated. So they made the ending and then the beginning? Like Star Wars? It has been over a decade since I've watched DBZ, so I don't remember much.

Dragon Ball began in the 80's as a manga, shortly folllowed by an anime adaption. But Dragon Ball Z is the anime that got popular in the western world. A lot of people aren't even aware that DBZ isn't the beginning of the series.
The manga as a whole is just called Dragon Ball, at least over in Japan. The English translations for here have them divided into Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z since that's how we know the series in the US.

And to be fair the tones between the two halves are pretty different. (And the art style of the first anime. It's more...cartoon-y, I guess.) Dragon Ball starts out very light hearted and joke-y. Then it turns into Goku fighting in tournaments. Then the first villain is introduced and the tone gets more serious. Then we get to DBZ, where they keep getting new and more powerful villains to beat. Which seems to be the basic plot they've stuck with since then.

Oh, ok!

Do you collect manga? It can get super expensive. I used to have Revolutionary Girl Utena manga. I think I gave it to my sister? I forget.

When I get deep enough into a series.
I'm working on owning all the Dragon Ball volumes. On my kindle, though. They cost less digitally. Probably not the smartest move on my part though. I do like/kinda prefer paperback.
