The doctrine of The Trinity

God Father doesn't have a name.

I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you.Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. John 17:11

  • Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me

Hi J
I read John 17:11 in 4 different bibles.
Only one speaks of the name of God, the name God gave the Son.

The others speak of God Father KEEPING THEM in God's care. (the dicsiples).

Check verse John 17:6 it states that Jesus has manifested God's name to His dicsiples by letting them know everything about God...IOW,,,Jesus let His followers know what God wanted them to know.

The name here, to me, would seem to be HOLY FATHER. And Jesus asks God Father, the Holy Father, to protect His disciples by the power of God's name...referring back to all of God's titles back in the O.T.

The GIVEN TO ME in John 17:11 refers to those given to Christ...
NOT to any name given to Christ.

I believe they are not 3 persons.
Isa.9:6
Unto us a child is born, His name, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father...
Can't get simpler than that.
Rev.1:8
Jesus states,
I Am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, A-Z....The Almighty...
Col.1:16
By Him were all things created....speaking of Jesus

So, if They are 2 different persons, it doesn't make any sense.

Gen.1:1
God created the heaven and the earth.

There is only One God....

As I tried to explain, these 3 are ONE.

Diane,

You seem to have confused the essence of the one God with the 3 persons of the Trinity. See: How can God be three persons, yet one God? (Wayne Grudem)

so that they may be one

as we are one

If we're speaking about the Trinity,,,
then the names are:

God the Father
God the Son
God the Holy Spirit

Anything else moves away from the Trinity/Godhead.
ONE GOD....
three persons in the one God.
I disagree with the 3 persons!
God is the Father,
God is the Son,
God is the Holy Spirit, One Person....carrying 3 offices, roles....
You do believe that God was/is Jesus?
So how could that be another person?

True.

Just as Jesus Christ.

The Lamb
The Word
Prince of Peace
Mighty God
Alpha and Omega
The Christ
The Messiah
The Holy One
The Lord
I AM

...and on and on

However, the Name above every name is Jesus.

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11

True!
Same person....

God is the Holy Spirit, One Person....carrying 3 offices, roles....
You do believe that God was/is Jesus?
So how could that be another person?
Sounds right to me as you've stated it.
I DID say God the SON...so apparently I DO believe Jesus is God.

Carrying 3 offices?
I don't know. I guess we could argue this.
What I've learned from two different churches is that there are THREE PERSONS in ONE GOD.

You want to call it offices....I'm not even sure what the difference is.
Is the Holy Spirit a person or an office?
Is Jesus a person or an office?

The Trinity/Godhead is just to difficult to explain and when we try we sometimes go haywire into heresies. (Not saying YOU did).

Trinity is like "3 in one" oil. It comes out of the same can (God), but has many purposes (Jesus as Savior and Holy Spirit our comforter and teacher).

No one has ever fully understood the Trinity/Deity and probably never will, but can only understand in part.

When You become ONE,
as they were ONE,

are you going to bicker about the same old doctrines?

No one is bickering or arguing and sometimes the same old doctrines, if they be of Christ, being repeated can bring a new light to someone else.

Check verse John 17:6 it states that Jesus has manifested God's name to His dicsiples by

...by being a manifestation of His Father’s name.

Remember the name that represents the Godhead.

For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; Colossians 2:9

Wouldn’t you think God the Father would Name His Son after Himself, with the Name above all names?

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11

Who else would God the Father name His only begotten Son after?

No J.
I wouldn't think the Father would give the Son His own name.
The Father does not have a "name".
He only has titles.
The only name He could have is Yhwh.

If you want to call God Father Jesus,,,then you're getting the entire Godhead all mixed up.

Jesus DID NOT EXIST before 2,000 years ago.
BEFORE that he was the 2nd person of the Trinity,
He was THE WORD of God,,,,He was the spoken words of God.
John 1:1

The spoken word of God was incarnated 2,000 years ago.
At that point, the word of God became who we call JESUS.

I've said many times that ONLY reading the bible does not explian everything very well...we also have to use theology.

The Godhead consists of:
GOD THE FATHER
GOD THE SON or GOD THE SECOND PERSON, or JESUS
GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT

John 17:6 also speaks of God's name....
but not His name as in Jesus,,,but His name as in His character and attributes. Because God Father does NOT HAVE A NAME.

Many bibles translate John 17:11 totally differently from how you posted it. It does not even speak of a name....but of God Father caring for us.

Read John 17:3:
"This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

The above speaks of 2 .....
YOU...THE ONLY TRUE GOD
AND
JESUS CRHRIST (whom YOU have sent)

It speaks of God Father
And
God Son JESUS.

I believe Jesus existed before 2,000 years ago.
In Gen.3:22, which is The Tree of Life.
Now, God didn't become flesh until about 2000 years ago.

Then you have the scripture of Rev.1:11, saying, I Am Alpha and Omega....

Then you have Melchisedec, Heb.7:1-3
King of Salem, King of Peace..
WITHOUT FATHER, WITHOUT MOTHER, WITHOUT DESCENT,
Having NEITHER BEGINNING of DAYS, NOR END of LIFE, made like unto the Son of God, abideth a priest continually.

Jesus is Lord; YHWH

Exactly.

Which is also the name of the Son.

I covered this in a previous post.

Please look up the name Joshua in the Hebrew.

There you will find the letters YHWH.

The Name of the Godhead: Elohim

I’m shocked you would say this.

I have extensively covered the scriptures in the Old Testament that are Jesus, The Lord God Almighty.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.
Genesis 17:1

This was our Lord who appeared to Abraham.

The same Lord who became flesh.

I can't speak for wondering but I think if you read that again she meant the name Jesus, being the English name, was only given to Mary by the angel of the Lord 2000 years or so ago according to Matthew 1:21.
