The Ophicial Philadelphia Philles Phanatics Thread

The Phillies and the Yankees both got rained out last night, but the BIG news is

SPYGATE!

The Colorado Rockies have officially accused the Phillies of cheating in their 9-5 victory over the Rockies Monday night. The Rockies spotted a Phillies coach using binoculars to watch the Rockies' catcher giving signals to the pitcher.

The Phillies claim that the coach was watching a Phillies catcher, but TV film shows him watching the Rockies catcher. Officials say that the evidence is inconclusive, and then the New York Mets report that they had also seen this occur.

Well, yesterday, the Yankees won and the Phillies lost. Today, the Yankees lost and the Phillies didn't play. But the BIG news is:

The San Francisco Giants have a good catcher, but he is a bit, uhm, well-fed. He was on base, rounding third, but couldn't get to home plate in time because he was too slow.

One sports program showed him running in slow motion, while playing the theme to "Chariots of Fire." He's pretty upset and is publicly blasting the sports program.

The Phillies and the Yankees both won today, but the BIG news in sports is:

The Philadelphia Flyers hockey team was playing a semi-finals series against the Boston Bruins. The winner of the best-out-of-seven series advances, while the loser is eliminated from the play-offs.

The Bruins won the first three games (you need four to win the series), but his afternoon, the Flyers finished winning the next four in a row!

What a city of champions!

The Phillies and the Yankees both won today, placing the second-place Yankees one game out of phirst place. The Phillies are 2.5 games in phirst place.

AND...the Seattle Mariners have accused the Phillies of cheating by using binoculars to see their signals.

And..this note from history:

Here's a fun story: In 1898, the Cincinnati Reds were playing the Philadelphia Phillies at the old Philadelphia Base Ball Grounds (Baker Bowl) when Reds' infielder Tommy Corcoran, coaching third base, tripped over a wire in the ground. He yanked it up... and followed it all the way to Phillies reserve catcher Morgan Murphy, who was sitting with a pair of opera glasses and a telegraph machine. It was, by far, the greatest attempt at sign stealing in baseball history.

Well, today the Yankees lost and the Phillies are leading 3-0, but the BIG news is:

With a 3.5 game lead, the Phillies have the biggest lead of any division leader!

To explain: if you win one game and your opponent loses one game, you are one game ahead of him. But if you win one game and your opponent doesn't play, you are half a game ahead of him.

The BIG news in baseball today is:

During last night's game, a Phillie batter made a bizarre hit. The ball bounced off the wall, bounced off an outfielder's shoe, and bounced over the wall and out of play.

Umpires ruled that it was a double. If the ball had hit the outfielder's shoe first, it would have been a home run.

The Yankees and the Phillies both won today, but the BIG news is:

The Tampa Bay Rays (No, that's not a joke; it's really their name) have the best record in baseball this year, and they're in the same division as the Yankees, who have the second best record.

With the Phillies holding a comfortable five-game lead in their division, the Rays and the Yankees are locked in a close contest for division champ.

The Yankees and the Phillies will not play until tonight, BUT:

The Marlins benched Hanley Ramirez for not hustling fast enough while chasing a ball Monday. The ball had bounced off Ramirez's shoe, and he jogged after it while two runners scored. Criticizing his coach and team mates, Ramirez, who was the National League's top batter last year, told reporters that his leg had been hurt the previous inning and he couldn't run any faster. He was also benched for today's game.

Padres pitcher Mat Latos apologized for damaging broadcaster's sunroof during batting practice. He claims that he threw the ball into the stands as a souvenir, but the ball cleared the wall and hit a news broadcaster's roof. Latos has apologized, insists that it was an accident, and has promised to pay for the damage.

After building a five-point lead last night, the Yankees managed to lose, and the Phillies also lost. But the BIG news is :

LOLLYGAGGATE!

Hanley Ramirez, last year's batting champion, continues to dominate the news as he blasts his manager and his team mates. Ramirez had been yanked out of a game for jogging after a ball while two runs scored, and as far as we know, Ramirez, his hurt leg, and his big mouth are still on the bench.

The Phillies and the Yankees both lost today, and it was even worse for the Yankees: they were beaten by the Tampa Bay Rays. The two teams are in the same division, and the Rays are now three games ahead of the Yankees.

And Hanley Ramirez carried his mouth to his team mates, one at a time, to apologize, and they're letting him play again. The Marlins won both games while he was benched, and that might have put some pressure on him.

What a day!

The Phillies won and the Yankees lost, and they are now tied for the second-best record in baseball.

Last night, Marcus Thames won the "Heroic He-Man" Award for the Yankees. He made a great hit, threw his bat the wrong direction, stepped on it while running to first, and kept going despite a sprained ankle.

Today, the Atlanta Braves were losing 8-0 in the eighth inning...and won.

The Yankees are playing the division-leading Rays tonight, and they have too many players on the disabled list.

Yowser! The Yankees lost to the Rays, putting them phive games out of phirst place. And after winning yesterday, the phabulous Philllies have the second-best record in baseball!

If they were in the same division, the Phillies would be 4.5 games behind the Rays.

Blazin Bones said:
My Yanks just help you keep your first place lead. be sure to keep that in mind. Can't wait to play your boys in june.

We'll have some squaking on this board when that game is over with.

Especially when Hughes, Pettite and Sabathia combine to three consecutive perfect games in a row against your boys. :) (How that for wishful thinking?)

Well, the Yankees are losing and the Phillies have already lost, but the BIG news in sports is:

Security guards at Yankee Stadium confiscated a fan's Ipad, citing security regulations. A spokesman for the stadium said that all laptops are banned as a security measure. The Ipad was returned undamaged to the fan after the game.

Neither team played today. The Yankees are now six games out of first place, but the BIG news in sports is:

The Texas Rangers have filed for bankruptcy protection. The team is trying to get sold, but there are legal problems with their debts. By being allowed to pay off one $75 million debt ahead of the others, the team can be sold. The Rangers are in first place in their division.
