The Push Yourself Thread!

Hi Jeff, thanks for the update. I am so encouraged that you are still 'pushing'. Did you do the 8 miles? You always do your homework, and I admire that about you...I want to be more like that. I think I am going to start trying to educate myself more too, because I need to just be more careful and responsible for the sake of my health...and age.

I have been a bit more active the past few days, but I had another week of some sickness. :gah I was battling an ear infection, and I was able to ignore it for a long time, but then the pain was a little much. :grumpy I have been eating a great deal of garlic, (which I am use to doing when I get fevers) and now my ear is doing a lot better. It's my prayer that I do not get sick this coming week, but that even if I do the Lord helps me to keep going forward as I am able. The blessing is that God seemed to really use the past four days to get my mind straight on a few things, and I am so thankful. I feel so motivated to please Him tonight, and so I wrote a list of goals to tackle this week...I am interested to see how much I will get done by His grace.

I am still steroid free, after being on steroids for years now, which is another huge blessing.

Another update...

Well, I woke early this morning in serious pain. It was my ear, and my jaw, which I could barely open. :bigfrown I was so surprised, because I was feeling better yesterday. So, Michael stayed home and took me to the doctor, and I found out that I have two ear infections and that my jaw was swollen, which was obvious. So, more lovely medicine. Could you guys please pray that I would have a thankful heart. I am going to take the medicine, and obey Michael and the doctor, but I am still determined that I will push myself with the Lord's continued help. :shades

Hi Tina and thanks for the update.
I’ll pray about your ear infection and your jaw. I’m sorry to hear about that, and I know that when your steam is taken away, it can be discouraging on top of the physical pain that you’re enduring. With that, I will also be praying that you will find cause for thankfulness. You’re a wonderful example to us all. :yes

Do they have you on antibiotics? Those always mess with my innards; I hope that you’re going to make it through the medicine without any issues.

Hey, I think that one of your goals was to get rid of half your stuff. How’s that coming along? :clap

As far as Saturday my muscles were still very sore including my quads. (We did extended wall squats on Thursday). Anyway, I thought that I’d play it safe and keep the miles down while keeping my heart rate in a lower range to build capillaries.

In case you were wondering, at 85% of your maximum heart rate and above (That’s 170 for me), your tearing down and destroying muscle tissue which has to be rebuilt. At 70% (140 for me) you’re not breaking down the muscle, but rather your building capillaries which is needed for better blood flow which helps to carry away lactate acid that builds in your muscles, which causes fatigue and from what I’ve experienced, severe cramping after a run…

So anyway, I wanted to do a slow run no further than 6 miles on Saturday because I was pretty sore from Thursday and I could feel that my legs hadn’t recovered. Well, there were four of us that showed up Saturday (Everyone else ran a Cure for Cancer race) and of course two were Elite runners (5 minute miles) and the other was recovering from a shin fracture (15 minute mile) and he was only doing 4 miles. So, I ended up picking up the pace while they slowed down for me until we made our split because they wanted to do 10 miles.

So anyway, we make the split and within a mile or so, because of the way our routes were laid out, I catch the guy with the fractured shin and then slow down for the last 1 ½ miles back to the shop for the company and teh cool down. I kid you not, I did just under 7 miles, and the two guys that I started off with did over 10, and no sooner did we make it back to the store, opened the door when these two show up. :grumpy Basically that meant that in the time it took me to mosey along for around 3 miles, they had done almost 6 miles. :o

I’m still pretty sore today, and if can get away with it, maybe I’ll just do a slow easy 3 miles today or tomorrow to build circulation, and save myself for a moderate 5 or 6 mile run on Thursday… oh yeah, then the dreaded ab class after our Thursday run. :screwloose

Sorry for the book.... With everything going on with GM, it's nice to get my mind moving in a different direction.

P.S. Here's a nice little site on heart rates.

Jeff,

I liked the book, because it shows me that you are really enjoying what you are doing and that we can do healthy things and like it. And that we can just continue on even if we have set backs. As I was reading, I was also thinking about the point that when we exercise in a way that is optimal for our bodies that it can cut down on some of the side effects like the cramping. I am going to check out that website, and see if I can figure out something that fits in with what I am doing.

I am really sorry about how the changes at GM may be affecting you, and I will pray for you guys. I am glad that God is helping you focus your thoughts elsewhere at times for a rest.

As far as those runners who did six miles in the time it took you to do three, that's your future, Jeff, so be encouraged. I am learning that principal myself these days, that those who have progressed beyond me are showing me what I may be doing myself in the future if I keep my hand to the plow.

As for me, I tried to resist any antibiotics, but Michael said I had to take them. The doctor also wanted me to resume the steroids, and has put Michael on alert. I am doing my best to not go against this, but I am going to try to do my best to be praiseful within this framework. I told the doctor that I didn't want any antibiotics, and she said that 'garlic' wasn't going to get things taken care of. lol The thing is, I still think that garlic over time would do the trick. I am such a hard-head.

I am still pitching, but I am having trouble with one piece of furniture that I know needs to leave the dinning room...it's the buffet table. I was thinking about moving it to the kitchen, doing some new stain, and then putting a counter on the top and making it a unique sort of counter. Of course, that could be just an excuse to try and keep it...I am still pondering. The other things have been just flying out the door, and the boys have taken a lot of furniture out. I am also pondering a roll top desk that everyone loves, but that's a secret still...I may have to bring that subject up over pizza. ;)

Anyway, we haven't reached half, but I think that we have reached about 15%, which was really pitching and donating quite a bit. I am going to have another go through once we do the last two rooms, the basement, the garage, and the rest of the barn and try to get rid of more. I wonder if this has anything to do with being sick for so long, and feeling as if I was just cluttered up? Who knows, but I will say that so far it's helped us become more organized in this tiny house.

Thanks for the update, the Lord bless you.

Hi lovely! Hope all is well!

Ran 7.5 miles through the trails at our local national forest last Saturday. It was a fantastic run and sure beat running on pavement!

i'm doing bjj as hobby i rolled(the applications of techniques) for ten minutes, as i never reached that before and each time i go longer the easier it is for me to pace myself.

now i just need to able to more than two techniques the calve crunch and guillotine, i like these techniques kimora and arm bar, and i need to learn to how to sweep as well

jason

That's great Jason! I just got back from a 5.5 mile run and I feel fantastic! :)

Sounds like your building upper body strength as well... I really need to work on my upper body too, but it's hard for me to get motivated :shrug

It's funny though, cause like I said in another thread, my son loves wresting and we just messed around for about 30 minutes last night. He's going to wipe me all over the mat in another 5 years! :lol

Speaking of... we went camping this weekend and some kid picked a fight with my son over what kind of bike my son was riding out of all things :confused . Well, my son tried to avoid the fight, but push came to shove and the kid was on top of my kid.. sooo, my son put him in the cradle and the boy gave up immediately. :nod Guess that was the end of that :yes

thanks, well i aslo lift before that class last night, we have a few wrestlers in our class, yes my arms are sore allittle now, keep on running as i need to do that as well, i'm trying a new(old one actually) run hard for 30 seconds then slow down for a good speed, then speed up and slown down for as long as i can, it helps with the bjj, as that's the cardio is.

jason

I have found nothing more beneficial to cardio than 'rolling' the way Jason described.

p.s. I HATE the calve crunch!! :o

What's the calve crunch?

Running fast, then slowing down is called 'fartlek' :lol I love doing fartleks!

I'm really kinda bummed... I got the results back from my ct scan and found out that I have an aortic aneurysm right where the Aorta joins into the aortic valve. As a result, I can't do any heavy lifting and I'm not supposed to sustain my heart rate above 160 and my cardiologist told me not to do any 100 yard sprints. I guess it's because when your heart rate goes up, so does your blood pressure. or, when your lifting heavy and your really stressing your muscles, ones blood pressure really goes through the roof. Well, that could cause a blow out in my artery where the aneurysm is, and that doesn't sound like much fun, so... I can still push myself, but I'm tethered to my heart rate monitor which limits me. The worst part is, I feel great when my heart rate is above 170, and even at 184 for those short sprints.

a technique that uses the oppenentes foot as pry bar to break the tibia or bruse the calve, it is done by grabbing the leg and hooking with one are and grabbing the other arm and leaning back while using your legs to keep your oppenent from countering, painful indeed, some have nicknamed it the kankle lock.
steve google that under bjj techniques and you find a video of it
jason

Thanks Jason.

BTW, I just finished a 10 mile race (The Crim) I came in at 1 hour, 34 minutes. Not bad for somebody who couldn't run 1 block 6 months ago :D

I averaged 9.28 minutes per mile while keeping my heart rate mostly below 160 ;) Too bad i made the stupid mistake of sprinting the last block and ended up tearing part of my quad.. ouch it hurts :ohwell

Okay, checking in. The last few months have kept me confined to the indoors for the most part, but our weather is already leaning more toward Fall and I am excited to get back outside. We are in the full swing of school, and so I am doing field trips once a week...we went to the zoo last week and I walked for hours. We are going hiking tomorrow. This is my effort to take advantage of the Fall season and jump start some more activity for myself, because once winter comes I will be confined again. So, I am going to post some more about pushing myself during this time, and pray that God will help me come up with something for the winter months when my lungs seem very frail and Michael has a tendency to make me rest a lot. The best part about these Fall outings is that Michael is not trying to 'baby' me, but help me push during this time...I love it...and that the children get to be active with me outdoors. I am starting a walking routine again too now that the weather is in my favor again.

Jeff, sorry about your injury...ouch.

The Lord bless all of you.

Hi Tina!

Great to see you around! We've missed you!

Eee gad, we've had so much rain the past few weeks we have standing water everywhere and the mosquitoes are absolutely horrible! to make it worse, since the weather is starting to cool down they are out mid day not too so there isn't any escaping them. Even Wall Mart ran out of insect repellent!

Oh well. Sounds like your enjoying the cooler weather and I'm so happy that your getting stronger and able to push yourself further. Way to go girl!

My plan for tonight is a 5 mile run, come home and eat some birthday cake with my wonderful wife and just settle in.

Ohh, here are some pictures of me and my son at the Crim. I can't believe I ran 10 miles and it felt great!

Jason,
Yeah, your right. My legs are healed finally and feel very strong! I'm just itching to run!

because i work seven days sometimes i have to rest and miss bjj, i hate missing that, i would like to be there three times a week. It's not easy at times for me, i hate that,

jason

Had a great run with our running group last night.

We started out with a 2 mile fast paced jog to the local High School. When we got there, we ran laps. Here's what I did. (I ran the patter wrong.. oh well)

As an FYI, 400 meters is one lap around the track and is equivelant to a quarter mile. Four times around the track is equivalent to 1 mile.

1 400 meter fast run around the track (heavy breathing)
1 400 meter run recovery (slow)
1 800 meter fast (heavy breathing)
1 400 meter recovery (slow)
1 400 meter fast
Recover by actually stopping for a couple minutes to get a drink. Man, I was wiped out!
1 800 meter fast run (heavy breathing)
Rest for a couple minutes.
1 400 meter fast
Rest for a couple minutes
1 400 meter fast
Rest for about 10 minutes
1 800 meter fast

I'm telling you, the last 800 meters was HARD! I was so out of breath that I couldn't even talk for almost a minute because I was trying to catch my breath so desperatly!

Put on some bug spray, helped carry the gatoraid jug back to the car

2 mile slow jog back to the store.

That was a hard 7 miles!
What a day of running! and Yeah, my legs are a bit sore today ;)
