The Push Yourself Thread!

Jason,

I have been diagnosed with COPD pneumonia and Adult Asthma, but I don't fit the 'smoker' profile at all, and I am very young. The chronic pneumonia is an issue that keeps me down more than anything right now, but four years ago I didn't even know there was a problem. It seemed to come on quickly, and go down fast...It felt like a spiritual attack to be honest.

i have asthma with the a post nasal drip. you are taking symbiocourt or advair along with an albuteryl inhaler? what ever you can do with endurance will help, even walking, swimming to much?

Yes, Jason, you guessed I am on all of that and a bit more. Btw, when I said 'young' I meant for the COPD, not 'very young' in life. I am thinking that you are right about the endurance thing. I have been walking for a while, but it seems like progress is slow...that just may be the nature of things right now for me. I think taking things up may help if I don't overdo.

Wow Jason, 1.2 hrs of cardio is excellent! I have a bike, but honestly, I'm not real big on riding it for sport. I don't know why :shrug
I didn't know you had asthma.

Tina,
Your doing great and if you look back, I'm sure your seeing some changes. I was just telling my wife last night that it was harder to run my first mile than it was the first time I ran five.

One thing I'm learning, is that time holds more value than intensity and if you over do the intensity too soon, you'll pay the price in one way or another. Keep in slow and take a break when you need to so you don't over do it. But be sure that you set out a period of time just for walking, and don't worry about how far you walk, but just fill the time full of walking. Walk slow if your tired, fast if you've got a little extra pep that day. Whatever it takes.

i thought you knew, i said that bjj has helped with my asthma along with any cardio. we "learn" how to use more lung "space", ie breathe deeper, and it moves the crap around whereby we can clear it out of the chest. all i have is a chronic cough, it hurts me to laugh hard, rather than laugh i cough.

Hello everyone! I wanted to check in here. I am still pushing myself. :yes I know, my posts are next to pitiful at this point. :shame But, I am finally seeing some progress after all this time, by God's grace. This is my 23 day exercising and walking daily, and it feels like habit almost now, meaning I am developing a 'want to'. It seems like my lungs are increasing in endurance, finally, even though I am no where near others, and I do struggle when it's cool. Because of that, I am going to have to find another place to walk, or settle for doing things in my living room. Anyway, I haven't quit, though I have been discouraged and tempted with these faulty lungs to resign myself to sick, but God is just helping me 'push' through. I know that I can do it in Him, and by His Word, and by His grace. Press on, everyone!

Hey! this has been a great read! It's neat to hear how everyone is pushing for their temple, mind, and spirit!

I've just started a new job and am attending school once again... I guess I'm pushing my mind at the moment.... But I need to start doing something physical too as my job is no longer a 'field job'.

Running sounds good....

Hey everyone!

Well, I'm still high from all the endorphins from last night run! woot woot!

It was in the low 20's, snowing and the wind was blowing so hard last night, but it was one of the best runs I've ever had.

I've built up to pushing myself at around an 8:15 per mile pace over around 6 miles, but last night, wow! I rocked 7 miles at around a 7:45 pace and that included my four walking breaks to catch my breath!

At around mile four, I just couldn't get enough oxygen in and my chest was starting to cramp, so I was forced to drop from our elite running group and do an active recovery on my own. I walked for maybe 100 feet until I could breath again and then went right back at it. Surprisingly, I was actually gaining on the group after my short rest! But it didn't last and after almost just under a mile (I'm guessing) I ended up walking another 50 -75 feet and then hit the snow covered pavement once again as hard as I thought I could maintain.

I could still see the group until they went down a hill (man, those guys just took off!) and I took the hill as an active recovery just keeping about the same pace. I went up a small hill, turned the corner and into the cemetery to add on an extra 3/4 of a mile. I almost bypassed the cemetary thinking that maybe I'd catch the guys coming out of the cemetary at the other end and I could run the last leg with them, but I didn't want to cheat myself out of the miles.

I had to walk one more time in the cemetery to catch my breath and bam, I was on the home stretch. To my confusion though, I didn't see their footprints in the snow when I came out, so I got to wondering if they added to the course and to my disappointment, they weren't at the store when I got back. Well, they did two loops through the cemetery and it was funny, cause they thought that they were so far ahead of me, that I must have taken some shortcut back to the store LOL! They averaged 7:31 per mile :)

For me, this was one of my best runs and although I ache a little this morning, I'm still feeling good!

Hope to hear how everyone else is doing :)

Well, it's been a while since I have updated, so here we go....

I became sick through the winter months here, and so I was set back pretty far. BUT, when I came back to it about three weeks ago, It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Right now the weather is mild, though a bit damp at times, and so I have been able to build back up to walking daily again. I am up to a two mile average, and sometimes three! All of this is by God's grace, of course, and I can see that even my set backs aren't as bad as they were in the beginning...it's nice to see a little progress. ;-)

I will say this, though, my long winter sure did humble me, and cause me to draw near to my Savior...isn't it a blessing to have a friend in Jesus? I guess there's really nothing more to say about that.

The Lord bless all of you!

Right now I'm pushing myself to get my weightlifting maxes up. Also I'm trying to get my 40 yard dash higher too.

Thanks lol.

Yeah today didn't work out to well :bigfrown . Its not supposed to be a workout day today, so at lunch I ate a cheeseburger. Unfortunatly we did some running and it came back ouy :puppydogeyes

Yup 7truth, them cheesburgers will do that :lol

I was up to about 35 miles a week until I smashed my toe one morning on a chair leg (thought I broke it) and then after that healed, I pushed to hard on a trail run and ended up with a shin splint... and I have a 5k race on the 22nd :sad

Ran a great 3 miles for lunch today and ended it with some weights.

Here are the times for each mile.
Mile 1 @ 7:25
Mile 2 @ 7:09
Mile 3 @ 6:56

If I train hard tomorrow and take Thursday and Friday off, I'm hoping to do sub 7 minute miles! This may be pushing it, but I want to remain optimistic!
Can't wait to see how I do on Saturday's 5k race for the cure in downtown Detroit! I sure hope it doesn't rain!
Wish me luck!
