The Rock that Jesus Builds his Church is not Peter

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Matthew 7:15-20

14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
2 Timothy 2:14-18

1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
2 Timothy 4:1-4

10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. 12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. 13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; 14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. 15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Titus 1:10-16

Harry,
No, I was not calling anyone on this thread a false prophet, albeit possible that there are a couple that might read this thread that are. I was making a point that the Word says that we can know false prophets by their fruits, and that discerning these false prophets is not judging them, for they will be judged by the Word at judgement. I also posted the verses written by Paul to Timothy to show that believers can know that there will be those that will not listen to sound doctrine but follow those false doctrines that are appealing to the flesh of such individuals. The letter that Paul writes to Titus shows that one can call false prophets abominable, disobedient, and reprobate. There is nothing wrong with calling out the truth about those that deny God, even though they profess him.

Then that would be all of Protestantism it would seem. Or do you believe that there is someone in Protestantism who is 100% infallibly correct in all that he teaches? But wait, Protestanst (except for one on this board that I know of) don't believe in infallibility ergo. they all, being fallible, teach some false doctrine and are false prophets.

Thessalonian,
You are right. According to the writings of Swedenborg, Protestantism is the false prophet.

"The false prophet." Are they in the churches of the Protestants, is because the Reformed Church are treated of as far as chapter 16 in revelation, and the Roman Catholics in chapters 17 and 18, and afterwards the last judgment, and finally the New Church.
Revelation 16:13-16

Verse 13. "And I saw out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet." This signifies the perception that from a theology founded upon the doctrine of the Trinity of Persons in the Divinity, and upon the doctrine of justification by faith alone without the works of the law. "Three unclean spirits like frogs" This signifies that there arose mere reasonings and lusts of falsifying truths.

Verse 14. "For they are spirits of demons." This signifies that they were the lusts of falsifying truths and of reasoning from falsities. "Doing signs, to go away unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them together to the battle of that great day of God Almighty." This signifies attestations that their falsities are truths, and the stirring up of all in the whole of that church who are in the same falsities, to attack the truths of the New Church.

Verse 15. "Behold, I come as a thief; happy is he that is awake and keepeth his garments," This signifies the Lord's coming, and heaven for those who look to Him alone, as God of heaven, and remain steadfast in a life according to His precepts, which are the truths of the Word. "That he may not walk naked, and they see his shame." This signifies lest they should be with those who are in no truths, and their infernal loves should appear.

Verse 16. "And he gathered them together into a place called in Hebrew Armageddon." This signifies the state of combat from falsities against truths, and the disposition of destroying the New Church, arising from the love of dominion and supereminence.

Emanuel Swedenborg is a false prophet...period. Protestantism is no false prophet and you know not of what you're talking about...nor does he. If this church is not Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox...what is it? Certainly not Hindu, Lutheran or any other I know of.

"The New Church (Church of the New Jerusalem) is based on the Bible, and on the teachings of the 18th Century Scientist and Theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg's mission was to bring Christianity into a new era of understanding. Religion can and does make sense!"

Any church so called, that basis it's beliefs on anything including what an 18th Century man wrote is in deep water. He is as much a false prophet as Joseph Smith. There is no truth regarding faith and salvation apart from what the holy Scriptures teach us. Man doesn't need to add to or take away from the written word of God. He does so at his own peril.

This guy speaks to and hears spirits and angels? OK...I would run, not walk from such false teaching as this. Talk about wolves in sheeps clothing!!

Spiritualism--"The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Godhead--the infinite source of all. It is the Breath of Atman,--the infinite power of God. It is not separate from, but operative through the Christ--the Higher Self." Dictionary of All Scriptures and Myths, by G.A. Gaskell, p 366 (this dictionary uses the philosophic sacredly held writings of all religions such as Zoroaster, Philo, Swedenborg, Buddah, Hermes, the Qabbalah, etc., in order to derive the definitions--hence the definitions given are mystical and spiritualistic).

I guess the Apostle John was in peril because he never wrote these things down.

3 John
[13]
I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink;
[14] I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together face to face.
[15]
Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends, every one of them.

Had he written it would it have been scripture? Where is it?

I guess Paul was mistanken in thessalonian's when he said:

[14] To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[15] So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.

Note, he attaches the Gospel to what they are to HOLD TO. In 2 Tim 2:2 he gives the mechanism by which some things are to be passed on.

Now when was this oral tradition to end? Where is sola scriptura taught? Go ahead and give me the standard answers. The problem then because why does Paul teach Timothy for instance Sola Scriptura while he tells the Thessalonians to hold fast to some oral teachings? When did sola scriptura begin?

Blessings

The doctrine of three Divine persons, which the Protestants believe with the Catholics, is false, but the Catholics have kept charity and good works with faith, and I agree with them on that truth. The Protestants have not kept charity and good works with faith, and therefore they have a hard time getting in heaven than Catholics, when they pass on the other side, which means after death. There are more Catholics in heaven than Protestants. The Protestants in heaven are the ones who came to acknowledge that repentance with faith is important to salvation. The Minister of the New Church I became a member in the year 1968, came from a Protestant background.

Seems there are as many flavors of Protestants as there are heads on this board. Luther said something like that already in his day after he started this ghastly system of Sola Scriptura who's fruits are division. I guess that is why there are so many denominations. Everybody going with what sounds good, blown about by every wind of doctrine. Hey, Luther said that also.

What Swedenborg saw:
I also saw a vast multitude of the Catholic nation, who had been hidden away and reserved by the Lord for a long time, and were reserved from the idolatrous contagion of the others; because they had lived well, and had acknowledged the Lord: and some were transferred to the south, some to the east, some to the west, and some to the north, that they might form some heavenly society, and be further instructed. For this end angels were sent to them, not only to instruct them, but also to guard them from the cunning and deceitful of their own nation, and from the influx out of their hells. In a word, many and great societies were instituted out of Catholics, and partly inserted into societies where the Word is read freely and the Lord is adored. If, after being instructed, they have received the truths of faith in the good of love, they are elevated into heaven. It is not their fault that they were born there. All their infants are in heaven: but these are ignorant of the falsities of their parents, not knowing that they are such; and they are educated under the Lord's auspices by the angels.

I could care less what swedonberg saw. He is no different than Luther in my book. A false teacher and prophet. Those who followed him were duped.

Thanks.

All that Thomas Aquinas wrote is false? You can't discern truth very well. I don't believe that all swedonberg wrote was false. But he mixed truth with error as the serpant did in the garden. It makes truth very hard to discern.

This is rather interesting actually. If you look in Is 22:22 there is a unfaithful steward called Shebna and a prophecy about the remove of him from the office of Steward, kind of like prime minister or spokesman for the king. Shebna was in an office of the Davidic Kingdome (remember Jesus is said to be a King in the line of David, Jesus is the spiritual establishment of the eternal kingdom) that had a long list of successors. As I recall 700 years worth I think I figured out one time. Now what is interesting is this passage;

Is 22
[20] In that day I will call my servant Eli'akim the son of Hilki'ah,
[21] and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your girdle on him, and will commit your authority to his hand; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
[22] And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. [23] And I will fasten him like a peg in a sure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his father's house.

Compare it with this.

Matt.16
1. [19] I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

There is much in these verses that I won't get in to that relates them. I'll just hit what directly responds to your question.
No self respecting Jew would have missed the parrellel’s in these passages. Opening and shutting are equivalent to binding and loosing in rabbinical language from what I understand. There is the symbol of keys in both. Keys indicate access and authority. I received keys for my house when I bought it that give me access to and authority over that house. They also indicate SUCCESSION. When I sell the house I will pass the keys on to the next person who has access and authority over it. There are over 260 popes listed all the way back to Peter in secular sources. This list can be verified by the very early writings of the Church where men such as Irenaus, Eusebius, Augustine, etc. etc. recognized the succession of the keys in the Bishop of Rome. Irenaus speaks of how Peter handed off the keys to Linus.

First of all be careful that you don't exclude it from being true because it is not in the bible. The destruction of the Temple and the persecution of the Jews is not recorded in scripture, though it is prophesied in several places. It happened around 70 AD. Some have said the Book of Revelations was recorded in 90 AD, yet John does not record it. So even that it could have been recorded is a non-sequitor to whether it is true or not. Most evidence for the destruction is taken from the Jewish writer Josephus in the first century.

Is it recorded in scripture? No. We do have mention of Linus as one of the early Christiants in scripture along with Clement, the third Pope. Writings of some of the Early Church writers confirm this. The event occured around 64-65 AD from what I understand.

The blessed apostles [Peter and Paul], having founded and built up the church [of Rome], they handed over the office of the episcopate to Linus (Against Heresies 3:3:3 [A.D. 189]).

It's co-oberated by the fact that in around 80 AD Clement, Bishop of Rome, the third Pope, acts like a Pope, sending orders to the Corninthians that they are to reinstate some leaders they have ousted. Now interestingly enough Corinth was 600 miles away, from Corinth and at the time John, the Apostle was still in Ephesus. Yet it is quite clear that Clement has authority over those in corinth if you read the letter which is available online. There are other writings in the early days that indicate that the Church as a whole recognized the authority of this letter.

More lies from a source that was not there. Peter is buried in Jerusalem and was the Apostle to the Jews according to the Bible, and Paul was the apostle to the Gentiles according the the Bible in Galatians. Whatever the pro-Roman Catholic bunch dream up that is not in the Bible is more than likely a lie. The Roman Catholics call the RCC the Church; keep in mind that the true Church is the body of Christ and is composed of all those who have been born again as Jesus taught Nicodemus. Just because one is baptized as an infant does not guarantee that they are born again. Only by believing in Jesus and then being baptized is one saved.

7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; 8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) 9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Galatians 2:7-9
