Do Catholics Worship Statues?

"Catholics worship statues!" People still make this ridiculous claim. Because Catholics have statues in their churches, goes the accusation, they are violating God’s commandment: "You shall not make for yourself a graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow down to them or serve them" (Ex. 20:4–5); "Alas, this people have sinned a great sin; they have made for themselves gods of gold" (Ex. 32:31).

It is right to warn people against the sin of idolatry when they are committing it. But calling Catholics idolaters because they have images of Christ and the saints is based on misunderstanding or ignorance of what the Bible says about the purpose and uses (both good and bad) of statues.

Anti-Catholic writer Loraine Boettner, in his book Roman Catholicism, makes the blanket statement, "God has forbidden the use of images in worship" (281). Yet if people were to "search the scriptures" (cf. John 5:39), they would find the opposite is true. God forbade the worship of statues, but he did not forbid the religious use of statues. Instead, he actually commanded their use in religious contexts!

God Said To Make Them

People who oppose religious statuary forget about the many passages where the Lord commands the making of statues. For example: "And you shall make two cherubim of gold [i.e., two gold statues of angels]; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end; of one piece of the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be" (Ex. 25:18–20).

David gave Solomon the plan "for the altar of incense made of refined gold, and its weight; also his plan for the golden chariot of the cherubim that spread their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the Lord. All this he made clear by the writing of the hand of the Lord concerning it all, all the work to be done according to the plan" (1 Chr. 28:18–19). David’s plan for the temple, which the biblical author tells us was "by the writing of the hand of the Lord concerning it all," included statues of angels.

Similarly Ezekiel 41:17–18 describes graven (carved) images in the idealized temple he was shown in a vision, for he writes, "On the walls round about in the inner room and [on] the nave were carved likenesses of cherubim."

The Religious Uses of Images

During a plague of serpents sent to punish the Israelites during the exodus, God told Moses to "make [a statue of] a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it shall live. So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set it on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live" (Num. 21:8–9).

One had to look at the bronze statue of the serpent to be healed, which shows that statues could be used ritually, not merely as religious decorations.

Catholics use statues, paintings, and other artistic devices to recall the person or thing depicted. Just as it helps to remember one’s mother by looking at her photograph, so it helps to recall the example of the saints by looking at pictures of them. Catholics also use statues as teaching tools. In the early Church they were especially useful for the instruction of the illiterate. Many Protestants have pictures of Jesus and other Bible pictures in Sunday school for teaching children. Catholics also use statues to commemorate certain people and events, much as Protestant churches have three-dimensional nativity scenes at Christmas.

If one measured Protestants by the same rule, then by using these "graven" images, they would be practicing the "idolatry" of which they accuse Catholics. But there’s no idolatry going on in these situations. God forbids the worship of images as gods, but he doesn’t ban the making of images. If he had, religious movies, videos, photographs, paintings, and all similar things would be banned. But, as the case of the bronze serpent shows, God does not even forbid the ritual use of religious images.

It is when people begin to adore a statue as a god that the Lord becomes angry. Thus when people did start to worship the bronze serpent as a snake-god (whom they named "Nehushtan"), the righteous king Hezekiah had it destroyed (2 Kgs. 18:4).

What About Bowing?

Sometimes anti-Catholics cite Deuteronomy 5:9, where God said concerning idols, "You shall not bow down to them." Since many Catholics sometimes bow or kneel in front of statues of Jesus and the saints, anti-Catholics confuse the legitimate veneration of a sacred image with the sin of idolatry.

Though bowing can be used as a posture in worship, not all bowing is worship. In Japan, people show respect by bowing in greeting (the equivalent of the Western handshake). Similarly, a person can kneel before a king without worshipping him as a god. In the same way, a Catholic who may kneel in front of a statue while praying isn’t worshipping the statue or even praying to it, any more than the Protestant who kneels with a Bible in his hands when praying is worshipping the Bible or praying to it.

Catholics are idolaters. There is no excuse for it and no asinine explanations will change the fact that Catholics bow down before statues and pray to them.

Catholics are deceived and need to repent of their double speak and vile practices.

This is forbidden!

One of the deceptions these practitioners of the occult use is the fact that Moses was told to fashion a serpent in the wilderness.

Numbers 21:8-9 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

No one was commanded to pray to this serpent or that the serpent was to be forever venerated afterwards.

Look at what finally became of this serpent...

King Hezekiah destroyed it because the children of Israel burned incense to it and venerated it.

2 Kings 18:4 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

The Catholic church is corrupt and evil.

Look at this blasphemous prayer!

Our Lady Of The Holy Rosary Novena Prayer

My dearest Mother Mary, behold me, your child, in prayer at your feet. Accept this Holy Rosary, which I offer you in accordance with your requests at Fatima, as a proof of my tender love for you, for the intentions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in atonement for the offenses committed against your Immaculate Heart, and for this special favor which I earnestly request in my Rosary Novena: (Mention your request).

According to these idolaters their false Mary asked them to do this...

“Listen, my faithful children; open up your petals, like roses planted near running waters; send up the sweet odor of incense, break forth in blossoms like the lily. Send up the sweet odor of your hymn of praise; bless the Lord for all he has done.â€Â

According to Catholics these scriptures mean nothing!

Jeremiah 44:17 But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

The harlot church is a lying church!

All that fluff, when BB could have simply blurted out "but they destroyed the bronze serpent."

This, unfettered by unnecessary verbiage and jpgs, would have brought us back to the other example given by Thessalonian:
The Ark of the Covenant, and the Cherubim astride it

Besides, the destruction of the bronze serpent was covered in the previous post by Thessalonian. Allow me to make a good counter-argument on behalf of BB, since he seems either unwilling or incapable of doing so:

If the people made the bronze serpent into an idol, and for this reason King Hezekiah destroyed the statue, why don't Catholic bishops destory statues?

Note that I put in a forgone conclusion into the question (ie, that Catholics really do idolize) just as BB would.

So let's assume that Catholics would say "because we don't idolize statues."
We can assume that BB would say "yes you do."

And then we go 'round the mulberry bush.

Waste of time.

Precisely why I am not taking the time to answer his habadashery myself but am simply doing a tit for tat tract cut and paste as he does. It's not worth my time talking to a wall. I certainly don't have any grandios visions of me and BB sitting in a pew next to eachother some Sunday, though I do guess Paul was knocked off a high horse so miracles do happen. Christians shouldn't strive for peace? That's unbiblical? That's news to me. Of course they will hate us when we do but it is not unbiblical to encourage striving for peace. Not peace at all costs of course, but I don't see that in the message. She doesn't say peace will come about because of men, but because of men turning to God. I don't see the problem. Of course anything Catholic has to be wrong when your Gospel is the Gospel of anti-catholicism.

By the way, Medjuigorie is not an approved apparition so it doesn't really matter what it says from a Catholic Church standpoint.

Another lie from the devil...

"The Value of the Scapular

Our Lord taught us to say the "Our Father." Mary taught us the value of the Scapular. When we use it as a prayer, Our Lady draws us to the Sacred Heart of her Divine Son. It is well, therefore, to HOLD THE SCAPULAR IN THE HAND while addressing Our Lady. A prayer uttered thus, while holding the mystical Scapular, is as perfect as a prayer can be. It is especially in TIME OF TEMPTATION that we need the powerful intercession of God's Mother. The evil spirit is utterly powerless when a Scapular-wearer, besides his silent devotion, faces temptation calling upon Mary. "If thou hadst recommended thyself to me, thou wouldst not have run into danger," was Our Lady's gentle reproach to Blessed Alan de la Roche.

Pope Benedict XV granted a partial indulgence EACH TIME the Scapular is kissed.

It is faith alone in Jesus Christ that will save us from "eternal fire"!

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

The Catholic plan of salvation is a one way ticket to eternal damnation!

Yes they do and God knows their hearts. If medjorge were false there hearts can still be true. Be disugsted all you want. You are enslaved by the false teachings of protestantism. You are in bondage to sola scriptura that will not let you see the big picture. You know, i've been on this board for a couple of months so far and all I have seen out of you is the gospel of anti-catholicism. No giving reason for the hope that is within you. No gentleness. Only hatred of all that I believe. Did Paul come in to the Areopogus in Acts 17 and say, YA BUNCH OF NASTY PAGANS, YOU ALL DAMNED TO HELL, ESPECIALLY YOU IN FRONT OF THAT ALTER TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. No BB, you preach the Gosepl of anti-catholicism. You have no identity without the Catholic Church. Your faith is in all that is not Catholic. It's very sad really. I will pray to the Mother of my God and Savior Jesus Christ that she will intervene with her son on your behalf and break you away from the bondage that has darkened your heart and mind to hate her and the Church her son established. May God grant you true peace and understanding.

God bless

1 Corinthians 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

The Catholic church has persecuted those who refuse to accept their idolatrous practices and would still be doing it if they had the power...

Champions of excuse making and crying foul when their practices are exposed.

They start threads promoting practices they know are not acceptable to Christians and then belly ache when they receive criticism.

There are plenty of Catholic and Orthodox forums for the "thin skinned" to go to if they don't like to hear the truth.

The fact remains that there is not a single scripture that encourages us to run to Mary for protection, and salvation. We are told to go to God alone for those things.

More prayers are said to Mary by Catholics than to God. When I was in Catholic school we spent hours praying the Rosary and calling upon Mary to protect us. We saw images in statues, paintings and stain glass windows, of Mary crushing the head of the serpent as though she had conquered sin.

Mary is not a conqueress of evil and death. Jesus did that alone.

Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

No mention of Mary

Acts 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

Acts 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

No mention of Mary

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

No mention of Mary

Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

No mention of Mary

Romans 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

No mention of Mary

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

No mention of Mary

Romans 6:4-7 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.

No mention of Mary

Jesus is for us. We don't need Mary to beg Jesus to save us or give us grace for life.

Romans 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

No mention of Mary

The RCC Mary is not to be thanked for our deliverance from sin and death but Jesus alone...

2 Samuel 22:3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

Isaiah 45:21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.

My only Saviour is Jesus. That is the true Christians hope. It is not in the devil goddess of the RCC.

There is the reason for the hope that is in me. Not a false hope in the goddess of an apostate religion.

Again the lie!

Speaking of hearing the truth, I wonder when you're ever going to deal with this faked photo you like to post?
blasphem.jpg

perhaps you missed this expose':
The original painting is of an origin I cannot ascertain. What I can ascertain is that the original DID NOT have the words "Mary, Co-redemptrix," etc on it.
MaryCoRedea.gif

Alongside this image, at the site I found it at, is found the following description:
Quote:
Mary, Co-Redemptrix, Mediatrix of All Graces and Advocate We are called to honor Our Lady in a special way for these times, under the title, "Mary, Co-Redemptrix, Mediatrix of all Graces, and Advocate". We are called to promote fidelity to, and live in conformity with, the authentic teaching of Jesus Christ, as expressed through His Church and His Vicar on earth. Notice the pagan sacred heart and the nail prints in her hands.

The alleged 'Catholic' source of these words is a non-existent page from a Celtic site devoted to legends and myths.
http://www.celt.net
This picture has been passed off by Bibleberean as if it came from the Vatican.

The painting without words in it can be found at Piney.com, a site for those who froth at the mouth at everything and anything. Go check it out and see what happened to all the guys who took LSD for the US Army- they now run a Fundie site.

They pass this off as if it is Catholic in the most strict sense.
And I have now pwned them in a big way.

Think of the level of charlatanism that it takes to add words to a painting and then label it "Catholic." The question here is does BB know that the painting was thus altered? Or is he the blameless dupe of the Fundie overlords?

They too are now pwned for being shameless liars and frauds.

Now one must ask: If Catholics are such profligate idolaters, why is it necessary to alter and fraudelently represent their theology?

And who would do such in 'defense of the truth?'
Lying to defend the truth? That is not of any Spirit I wish to associate with.

So what about it, Bibleberean? The picture was doctored after-the-fact, as the above proves- yet you pass it off as if it was in the Catholic missal. Care to comment, or does this prick your thin skin?

I don't know the origin of the painting. I have seen similar paintings on Holy cards.

I have given plenty of evidence for the title "Mediatrix and Mother of all graces" from Catholic sights.

Why should I even be slightly concerned with this weak accusation?

I quote Papal bulls and direct verbatim quotes from the Catechism, Vatican II the Council of Trent and Papal Bulls. (and bull it is)

There hasn't been a single refutation offered for the prayers said by Catholic and Orthodox saints calling Mary the "conqueress of evil and death" or that she shared in "redeeming the whole human race".

Blasphemous heresy from "Saint" Bonaventure

"Our Lady seeks for those who approach her devoutly and with reverence, for she loves, nourishes, and adopts us as her children."
(St. Bonaventure)

http://home.comcast.net/~cpnwmarysaints ... atima.html

Contrast this heresy with what the bible states.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

I don't see the words whereby "we cry Mary mamma, mother".

Do you?

Do we approach Mary or the throne of God?

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Catholics would have us go to Mary on our knees and beg her to beseech Christ to obtain graces of salvation for us.

Vatican II

"She conceived, brought forth and nourished Christ, she presented him to the Father in the temple, shared her son's sufferings as he died on the cross. Thus, in a wholly singular way she cooperated by her obedience, faith, hope and burning charity in the work of the Savior in restoring supernatural life to souls. For this reason she is a mother to us in the order of grace." (Vol. 1, p. 418)

"Taken up to heaven she [Mary] did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us gifts of eternal salvation." (Vol. 1, p. 419)

"Having entered deeply into the history of salvation, Mary, in a way, unites in her person and re-echoes the most important doctrines of the faith: and when she is the subject of preaching and worship she prompts the faithful to come to her Son, to his sacrifice and to the love of the Father." (Vol. 1, pp. 420 and 421)

BB concludes.

There is not a single scripture that exhorts us to go to Mary to obtain gifts of eternal salvation for us.

In fact God's word states otherwise...

Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

To claim otherwise is to say Christ's sacrifice was not sufficient and that we need a "way to the way" ( the Catholic devil goddess) to get to Christ.

There is no greater insult to the sacrifice of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ then to place a false god in our way to get to Him...

He died for us and took the wrath that was meant for us upon Himself.

I will not be a party in supporting this slap in the face of my Saviour by keeping silent. No matter what the price.

That's nice, Robert- you plan on dealing with the fraud you placed here? By that I mean, rather than shirking it off, investigating it, and, finding it unreliable and fraudulent, as it is, apologizing for passing it off as truth?

I didn't think so.

Let's let Billy Joel take us out
Honesty is such a lonely word.

Based on that mistranslation, many statues and paintings of Mary show her crushing a serpent under her foot - a graphic representation of her so-called role of co-redeemer. The imagery even found its way into the "infallible" pope's "Ineffabilis Deus" (Pope Pius IX)

Hence, just as Christ, the Mediator between God and man, assumed human nature, blotted the handwriting of the decree that stood against us, and fastened it truimphantly to the cross, so the most holy Virgin, united with him by a most intimate and indissoluble bond, was, with him and through him, eternally at enmity with the evil serpent, and most completely truimphed over him, and thus crushed his head with her immaculate foot.
Based on the faulty translation of Genesis 3:15 from the Latin texts of the Vulgate Bible, the English Douay Rheims Bible carried this error. Newer Roman Catholic translations (such as the NAB) have corrected this error in the translations but the theological errors remain in the co-redeemer dogma, paintings and prayers.

Billy Joel? Isn't he the guy that wanted to be the first one to have sex with a "nice Catholic girl" named Virginia?

Billy Joel is very, very honest... ;-)

More confusing and confounding garbage from Rome...

"The Church's Position Regarding Apparitions - The Church doesn't pay particular attention to any apparitions until they are studied, confirmed and accepted by the local bishops. Even though they may be authenticated, the messages remain as private revelation. Catholics are free to accept them, since they are in harmony with the teachings of the Church but everythings has been revealed in the Holy Scriptures and we must listen to the Church firstly. Marian Apparitions have the effect of helping the faithful to come closer to Jesus through the help of Our Lady."

"In 1984 Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the head of the Roman Catholic Church's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), declared that, "one of the signs of our times is that the announcements of 'Marian Apparitions' are multiplying all over the world."

BB comments:

On the one hand Catholics are supposed to keep revelations from the "spirit of Mary as private revelations".

On the other hand Cardinal Ratzinger now the current Pope says that these apparitions are multiplying all over the world and that is a "sign of the times".

No mention of the fact is made that false signs and wonders is one of the things Christ and His chosen apostles warn the faithful about in the last days.

Mark 13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

The Popes claim to be in the place of Christ. There word is final and their decrees absolute.

"The Catholic Church has never renounced its past practice of killing people that it considers to be heretics. On the contrary, the Office of the Inquisition still exists. It is part of the Vatican Curia. In 1965, its name was changed to "The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith". It is headed by Cardinal Ratzinger. [Note 5]

BB adds Ratzinger is now the Pope...

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX declared the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. After defining the dogma, the Pope said that if any person dares to "think otherwise than as has been defined by us" they thereby shipwreck their faith, are cut off from the Church, and stand condemned because of it. The Pope went on to say that if any person says, or writes, or in any other way outwardly expresses "the errors he thinks in his heart," then they thereby "subject themselves to the penalties established by law". [This papal bull is available on-line. Note 6 gives addresses.]

The Pope's reference to legal penalties is significant because a man had been executed for heresy 28 years before this papal bull was issued. In 1826, a Spanish schoolmaster was hanged because he substituted the phrase "Praise be to God" in place of "Ave Maria" ("Hail Mary") during school prayers. [Note 7]

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII issued a papal bull defining the dogma of the Assumption of Mary. He ended by saying, "It is forbidden to any man to change this, our declaration, pronouncement, and definition or, by rash attempt, to oppose and counter it." The Pope further declared that any person who attempts to do so thereby incurs the wrath of God and the wrath of the Apostles Peter and Paul. [This article is available on-line. Note 8 gives the address.]"
