Villa, Abidal and Tito
Doctors Cugat and Pruna also talked about three specific first-team members. On David Villa ’s recovery, Cugat said that “we’ll have to wait two or three more weeks until the EURO starts. This time will permit us to see the extent of his recovery. Time will give us the answer, in any case, he’ll have the last word on the matter.â€
Pruna talked about Éric Abidal ’s condition: “The transplant was successful. His recovery has been good but slow. The player, if everything goes well, could be released from hospital next week.â€
On Tito Vilanova , Pruna explained that “he’s doing fantastically well. In layman terms, we’d say he’s been healed. In scientific terms, he’s free of disease.â€
Doctors Ramon Cugat and Ricard Pruna , in collaboration with Egarsat, performed osteochondral knee surgery on Carles Puyol this Saturday morning. The Azulgrana captain underwent an arthroscopic procedure to clean up joint tissuein his right knee. The player will be out of action for approximately six weeks.
Doctor Cugat explained that there was a fragment of cartilagethat became detached from the player’s knee and, once removed, the doctors inspected the rest of the joint. “We didn’t have time towait this time. He told me that hisleg wasn’t working, that he couldn’t continue. These are subjective feelings. We could wait last year, but this time, even though the injury wasn’t as severe, it was more noticeable than last year,†said Cugat this Saturday afternoon in the Ricard Mexenchs press room.
Doctor Pruna recognised that “hepractically diagnosed himself†and that the player could be released from hospital as early asthis Sunday. “His objective is to be in optimal condition for the preseason,†Pruna said.
Puyol will, in all likelihood, miss the King’s Cup Final and the EURO.“If everything goes well, we’ll have Carles Puyol for many years,†said Cugat.
Pruna also talked about the number of injuries picked up by the first team this season: “we’ve had various muscle injuries. I believe most of them were mild or medium and that they were dealt with well. With that said, we had to go to the operating room five time this season: Abidal’s transplant, the ACLs of Afellay and Fontàs, Villa’s leg and now Carles.â€

Spanish League Preview – Final Week

05/12/2012 18:06
Barça’ s game in Seville is one of just two on Saturday, with Valencia and Real Sociedad also playing something of a dead rubber. All the action is set for eight o’clock on Sunday, when the final Champions League place, the Europa Cup spots and relegation will all be decided

Champions League
Real Madrid, Barça and Valencia have already secured the top three places and although
Malaga currently occupy fourth on 55 points, both Europa Cup winners Atletico Madrid, on
53, and Levante, 52 but with a better head to head goal difference against Malaga, could
catch them. Malaga are at home to Sporting in a game their Spanish full back Nacho Monreal
reckons: “we have to win – this isthe most important game in our historyâ€, - just what
Levante defender Juanfran believes ahead of his team’s game at home to Bilbao: “this is the
most important game in our 102 year history and it has fallen to us to go out and win itâ€.
For their part, Atletico Madrid arefifth on 53 points and after their Europa League win in
Bucharest on Wednesday and theensuing celebrations they have to get back to work when
they travel to Villarreal, needing a win to have any chance of catching Malaga. If Malaga
win, they are in the Champions League, if they draw and Atleticowin, or lose and Atletico or
Levante win, they are out!
Europa League
Levante and Atlético Madrid could be in the Champions League next year then, but they
could also be out of Europe altogether if they lose. Mallorca (52 points) could overtake them
both if they catch champions RealMadrid cold at the Bernabéu, though their head to head
record against Málaga means a Champions League spot is not possible, whilst Osasuna, 51
points in eighth are away to already relegated Racing. Osasuna’s ex- Barça defender Damia
reckons:“we’ve got nothing to lose – we’ve got this far and we are nearly there. Let’s just
hope our legs have still got something left in them!†Sevilla and Athletic Club (49 points) would need,
Levante, Mallorca and Osasuna to all lose to be in with a shout. The Basques are already
guaranteed a place in the EuropaLeague as Cup Finalists, but they will want to bounce back
after Wednesday’s setback and ruin Levante’s party, whilst Sevilla are away to Espanyol.
Relegation
With only Racing definitely down, there are five teams who are under threat of joining them:
Sporting(37 points) Zaragoza andRayo(40), Villarreal(41) and Granada(42). The only head to
head is at Vallecas, where Granada will be without Dani Benitez, amongst others, who was this
week handed a three month suspension for throwing a bottle at the ref last week. Sporting are
the only team who don’t have salvation in their own hands, needing to win at Malaga and for
results elsewhere to go their way, whilst Zaragoza will stay up with a win at Getafe and even
a point could be enough if Rayo or Villarreal lose, while Villarreal need just a point to ensure
they don’t go down.

Betis - FC Barcelona: Season end with pride (2-2)

05/13/2012 00:23

Sergio Busquets’ header put Barça ahead on 8 minutes

Ruben Castro led the Betis fightback with two second half goals after Alves was sent off

Keita headed the equaliser from a Montoya cross in injury time

FC Barcelona finished their league season with a hard won draw at the Benito Villamarín. A late goal from Keita gave them a point after they’d played the last half hour with ten men followingDani Alves’ second yellow. Betis took advantage of the extra man to overturn Busquets’ early goal with a brace from Rubén Castro. Despite the two goals, Victor Valdes is still the best keeper in the league and will again win the Zamora trophy – his fifth.

Barça finish the season on 91 points, having scored 114 goals, and can now turn their attention to the Cup Final with Bilbao in a fortnight’s time.

Busquets opens the scoring

With nothing but pride riding on the result, Barça and Betis gave the crowd an intense and lively start, with the visitors, as usual, dominating possession and creating the early chances and Sergio Busquets rounded off a good start on 8 minutes when heheaded in a Xavi corner at the near post .

Midfielders causing danger

Xavi then came close himself witha couple of free kicks that shavedthe woodwork, whilst Adriano and Keita found Castro on top form to keep them out. It was Barça’s second line of attackers rather than the front three who were coming closer, but the teamhad to settle for a single goal advantage at the break.

Alves sees red

Things turned more tricky for Barça just after the break, when Alves was shown a second yellowon 52 minutes. Guardiola brought on Montoya to cover and took off Afellay, which meant the team lost presence in midfield and began to see less of possession and lose control of the game.

Rubén Castro brace

Betis were ambitious throughoutand now they began to find space they hadn’t seen when up against 11. In three minutes they managed to turn the result around, with Ruben Castro breaking the offside trap and pouncing on two through balls to beat an exposed Victor Valdes in two one on one situations.

Keita to the rescue

It looked as if the team might be finishing off Josep Guardiola’s last game in charge with a defeat, but in injury time Montoya floated in a great cross which Keita met to head in the equaliser for Barça’s 114th goal in a season to be proud of.

www.fcbarcelona.cat 05/13/2012 00:38

2012-05-12_BETIS-BARCELONA_03.v1336863413.JPG

Guardiola is pleased with his team’s performance at the BenitoVillamarín: “playing with 10 men against a team that plays footballso well is complicated. We tried itand we managed to equalise
“Keita probably deserved to play more. He’s a very dependable player in every regard. He gives us things that the other midfielders don’t have. I’m very pleased with his performance
“Questions on the future don’t depend on me, from my point of view, Alves is an irreplaceable player. He’s been fundamental for Barçaâ€
Praise for Betis
The Barça manager didn’t hold back in his praise for Real Betis: “they are a great team. They play very well and they have great players. They’ve been together for a while, with the same manager and great supporters.†Guardiola finished by saying “Betis have had a great season.â€
Pep Guardiola held a press conference after this Saturday’s draw against Betis. The Barça manager said he is satisfied with the behavior of his players: “we played a good first half. In the second, before we went down to10 men, we weren’t as good. After the expulsion, playing against a team that practices good football is complicated. We tried it and we managed to get the equaliser through Ketia ’s header.†On the Mali international, Guardiola said thatthe player “probably deserves more. He’s a very dependable player in every regard. He gives us things that other midfielders don’t have. I’m pleased with his game and, in general, the team’s work.â€
Afellay , who featured in the team’s starting line-up for the first time since his injury, was also mentioned by the manger. “He played very well. He participated, he had a chance to score and he didn’t lose any balls. With Alves’ red card, I preferred to sub him out to avoid fatigue. Anyway, it’s good news for the Dutch national team and for the future,†said the FC Barcelona manager.
When asked about Alves ’ future, Guardiola was clear: “questions on a player’s future don’t dependon me, but from my point of view, Alves is irreplaceable. He’s been fundamentafor Barça.â€
Lastly, on his own future, Guardiola said: “La Liga existed before I came and it will continue to exist without me.â€

Eleven defeats in four years

05/13/2012 12:55
Josep Guardiola’s Barça has lost just 11 of their 152 league matches over the past four years

An unbeatable record! Josep Guardiola, who took charge of his last league match as first teammanager on Saturday (2-2), has established an astonishing record of just 11 La Liga defeats, 116 wins and 47 draws in 152 matches played during his four-year period in charge.
412 goals scored, 109 conceded
Guardiola’s teams have collected a total of 373 league points over this period, an average of 93.25 per season – the biggest haul coming in 2009/10, when Barça finished with 99. They have scored 412 (that’s an average of 2.71 goals per match) and have only conceded 109 (0.71 goals per match).
Two defeats against Atletico and Osasuna
Atletico Madrid and Osasuna haveproved to be the toughest opponents, both sides boasting two wins against Barça over the four years while Numancia, Espanyol, Mallorca, Hercules, Real Sociedad, Getafe and Real Madrid have managed one. Of the 11 defeats, two (against Mallorca and Osasuna) came at the end of the 2008/09 season when the league title was already mathematically decided and another in 2010/11 (against Real Sociedad) when the title was all but decided.
And finally, a few interesting stats. The most common score line under Guardiola has been 2-0 in Barça’s favour (17 times) followed closely by 1-0 (14 times), 2-1 (13 times), and 3-0 and 1-1 (12 times each).
The biggest wins were the 0-8 win away to Almeria and the 8-0 home win against Osasuna while the 0-2 defeat to Hercules in the Camp Nou was the only time Barça lost a league match by 2 goals or more.

The Zamora Trophy belongs to Valdés

05/13/2012 13:59
Victor Valdés has matched the record of the legendary Antoni Ramallets, up to now the only goalkeeper to have won the Zamora trophy for the fewest goals conceded an amazing five times
He is also the first goalkeeper to win the trophy four years running

The 19 Barça Zamora Trophies

- Sadurní (1969, 75 and 75)
- Reina (1973)
- Artola (1978)
- Urruti (1984)
- Zubizarreta (1987)
- Valdés (2005, 09, 10, 11 and 12)
"I’m excited about winning this fifth Zamora trophy and equalling Ramallets. He’s a reference point for me in goal†. Although Victor Valdés has always given priority to collective prizes rather than individual honours, his achievement this season of winning a fourth consecutive Zamora trophy (for the goalkeeper who concedes the fewest goals) is a source of great pride as it puts him up alongside one of the all-time greats, Antoni Ramallets. Valdés has now won the trophy five times (2004/05, 20008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12) , equalling the efforts ofRamallets, up to now the only player to win the trophy five times (1951/52, 1955/56, 1956/57,1958/59 and 1959/60) .
52 years later
It’s taken 52 years for another goalkeeper to equal the record set by Ramallets. And it’s fitting that it should be equalled by a Barça player. This latest honour consolidates Barça’s position at the top of the Zamora ranking with 19 trophies, ahead of Real Madrid’s 16.
Valdés has not only equalled Ramallets; he has also set a new record of four consecutive Zamora trophies, all of which he has won during Guardiola’s time in charge.
28 goals in 35 matches
In laying claim to this year’s trophy, Valdés conceded a miserly 28 goals in 35 matches, giving him an average of 0.8 goals per match. Along the way he’s kept 17 clean sheets and established a record of 896 minutes (between 21st September and 6th November) without conceding a goal in competitive matches.

Leo Messi won, for the second time in his career, the Pichichi Award . The award is given to thethe highest goalscorer in La Liga. The Argentine, who scored 50 goals in the competition (in 37 matches), established a new record in the Primera División, and he broke Cristiano Ronaldo ’srecord, set last year, of 41 goals. This is the 11th time in Club history that a FC Barcelona playerhas finished as La Liga’s top scorer.

From Mariano Martín to Messi

Leo Messi closed out his La Liga campaign with 4 goals over Cristiano Ronaldo and 27 goals over Falcão , second and third, respectively. This is the player’s second Pichichi Award. This first time the Argentine won the trophy was in the 2009/10 season, when he scored 34 goals in 35 matches.

Before Messi, nine FC Barcelona players finished the season as theLiga’s top scorers: Mariano Martín (1942/43, 32 goals), César Rodríguez (1948/49, 28 goals), Cayetano Ré (1964/65, 25 goals), Carles Rexach (1970/71, 17 goals), Johan Krankl (1978 / 79, 29 goals), Quini (1980/81 y 1981/82, 20 and 26 goals, respectively), Romario (1993/94, 30 goals) and Ronaldo (1996/97, 34 goals).

It’s worth noting that Samuel Eto’o also won the Pichichi awardin the 2004/05 season, level with Diego Forlán (25 goals apiece), but the daily Marca , entity that awards the prize since the 1952/53 season, stated that Eto’o had scored 24 goals, the 25th goal, scored against Mallorca, was given to Deco .

Spanish League Round Up – The Final Weekend

05/14/2012 09:00
The final weekend of the 2011/12 season provided excitement and drama right up to the final whistle, with Villarreal and Sporting going down and Malaga, Levante and Atletico Madrid making the European spots.
Rayo and Zaragoza escape the drop

ultjorn.v1336995125.jpg

Betis-FC Barcelona
With 88 minutes on the clock, Rayo Vallecano were a second division team, with Villarreal drawing at home to Atletico Madrid, Zaragoza winning in Getafe and Granada holding on for the goalless draw. Then Atletico’s Europa League hero Ramon Falcao stunned the Villarreal crowd with his 24th goal of the campaign, Lotina’s team were still safe though, just as long as Rayo didn’t win. On 92 minutes, Rayo got a corner, even their keeper was in the box and the ball hit the woodwork, then fell to Raul Tamudo who scored the most important of his nine goals for Rayo this season: Rayo 1- Granada 0! Rayo were safe andVillarreal were down. Lotina’s team – who began the season in the Champions League – paid the price for a troubled campaign, with three managers, and ended third from bottom on 41 points, one behind Granada and two off Zaragoza and Rayo. Sporting are the other team going down, on 37 points.
Villarreal’s fall from grace
It’s been a remarkable escape actfrom Zaragoza, who finally got out of the bottom three on the last day of the season thanks to two goals from Apoño and HelderPostiga that gave them the third of the twenty-eight points they’ve taken since January to beat Getafe, who ended the game with 8 men. Equally remarkable has been Villarreal’s fall from grace this season after 10 years in the top flight and their boss Miguel Angel Lotina was left to reflect: “it’s hard to explain what has happened. We had the chance to be safe last week and conceded late and the same thing happened tonight. Football has been unfair to Villarrealâ€.
Malaga in the Champions League
Malaga took the fourth Champions League place by beating Sporting 1-0 thanks to Roldan’s 11th goal of the campaign, whilst Levante’s 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao gave them sixth spot and the chance for an historic European debut next season and Atletico Madrid’swin means they will be able to defend their Europa League title next year. Osasuna just missed out, ending in seventh on 54 points, one behind Levante after beating already relegated Racing2-4 – the first time they’ve managed more than three goals all season. Madrid finish on 100 points
Mallorca finished eighth on 52 points after losing 4-1 at the Bernabeu, as Real Madrid took their points total to a record 100 and made it 121 goals this season– 46 of them from Cristiano Ronaldo, who ended up four behind Leo Messi – and 43 from their two other strikers, Benzema(21) and Higuain(22).

League goals
Season 2008/09: 105
Season 2009/10: 98
Season 2010/11: 95
Season 2011/12: 114
The numbers speak for themselves. Guardiola has seen his FC Barcelona team score a remarkable 412 league goals while he has been manager, an average of 103 goals a season and 2.7 goals a game. This is a team that has been breaking records in every department. In the season just ended, the team managed to set a new all-time best of 114 goals in a league season.
Guardiola’s sides have achieved four of the six highest goalscoring records in the entire history of the championship. In 2008/09 they got 105, setting a new record. In 2009/10, they got 98, in 2010/11, 95, and this season scored more than three goals a game to get a new recordof 114.
Messi the superstar
Messi has scored 138 of those 412goals, 33.5% of the total. And thatpercentage rises to an astounding 43% in Guardiola’s final season. The Argentinian found the net 23 times in the firstseason under the new coach, then got 34 a year later, 31 after that and 50 in the season just ended.
This last season, 16 different players found the target for FCB. Locally produced players got 89 of those, a massive 78%. By positions, eight goals came from defenders, 27 from midfielders and 77 from strikers. The other two were own goals.

Barça win second Pichichi – Zamora double
www.fcbarcelona.cat 05/14/2012 16:30
This was the second season in which Barça have had the top goalkeeper and striker in the same league championship. The same players, Messi and Valdés, also won the two titles in the 2009/10 season
The Argentinian is the ninth player in Liga history be top goalscorer twice
It is the fourth time that a team has won the Zamora and Pichichiwithout winning the championship title. The same happened to Athletic Bilbao (1946/47), Valencia (1957/58) and Deportivo (1992/93)

Since the league started in 1929, only twelve teams have produced both the top scorer and the top goalkeeper in the same competition . FC Barcelona is the latest thanks to the 50 goals scored by Messi and the mere 28 conceded by Valdés, who both win their respective trophies after also doing the double in 2009/10. These are the only times FC Barcelona have produced the winners of both accolades.
Messi double
Leo Messi thus joins a select group of players that have topped the scoring charts in la Liga on more than one occasion. His predecessors have been Forlán, Raúl, Ronaldo, Kempes, Amancio, Pahiño, Mundo and Gorostiza. Meanwhile, Valdés has not only equalled Ramallets’ legendary record of five Zamora titles, but has also become the first person to win four times in arow.
Non league winners
A team that produces the best striker and goalkeeper in a league season would normally beexpected to also take the Liga championship. That was not the case with FCB this season, and neither was it the first time this peculiar circumstance has happened. Athletic Bilbao (1946/47), Valencia (1957/58) and Deportivo (1992/93) faced the same fate.
