Bible Study WELCOME TO A DEEP LOOK AT GENESIS

I see Egypt more as a judgement, but that is a bit behind of the topic. its implied in this section. we should do exodus. the jews see that Egypt is judgement because Abraham failed to trust god with the famine and his seed paid the price. take note of the prophecy given to him and what is said and also when isreal goes into captivity. its nearly the same.
Egypt = judgement
Goshen =was a time of plenty

Goshen is a part of Egypt. did you ever wonder why ramses said isreal might side against us? the hyskos were invading Goshen. they took that land. I believe the city of unas and nox are in that area.

How is that? Messiah comes from Judah as we shall see in the next chapter, if I may jump ahead a little. Ephraim was destined to become many nations is what I read in my bible.

Did you miss what I said at the end of my statement? "Later on we shall see a change."

Day 132 Sunday 8/31/14 Genesis 49:1-4 Reuben.

Gen 49:1 "And Jacob called unto his sons, and said: gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the latter days."

Wow, what power of prophesy was given to the Patriarch's. Just imagine, being able to give a holy prediction to each of Jacob's sons. What's more interesting, it comes true. The spirit of prophesy was on Jacob for events reaching as far as Messiah.

Gen 49:2 "Assemble yourselves, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; And hearken unto Israel your father."

One might think that these sons were still at home, but they all had their individual lives and lived in different parts of Goshen. Probably servants went out to have the brothers heed the call of Jacob, Israel their father.

Gen 49:3 "Reuben, thou art my first-born, my might, and the beginning of my strength; The pre-eminence of dignity, and the pre-eminence of power."

Leah, Jacob's first wife, the hated one, gave Jacob his first son. Oh my, in those early times, the first born got a double portion of the inheritance, plus the favor and prestige of being the firstborn. Early on Reuben brought grief and sorrow upon his father when he and others, in revenge for the rape of Dinah, slaughtered the Shechemites even before he slept with Bilhah Jacob's wife.

The verse mentions pre-eminence of dignity, and of power. All this was given up because of sin. Perhaps being the firstborn and the power in that title, went to Reuben's head, and he took liberties that were not his to assume.

Gen 49:4 "Boiling over as water, thou shalt not have the pre-eminence; Because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; Then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch."

Of the sins of Reuben, having sex with Bilhah was the worst. That must have hurt Jacob terribly. Not just that his first born would do what is prohibited by any stretch of the imagination, but to have sex with Jacobs own wife? Now that's extremely personal. "Boiling over like water." gives us a picture of instability. He couldn't be trusted.

Within the framework of what was supposed to happen, the first born of Jacob was to be in the line of Kingship, and priesthood. Because of Reuben's sin, that was forfeited and given to Judah, as we shall see later on, and the priesthood to Levi.

Notice: We only have this Chapter and Chapter 50 left. Now would be a good time to start another study. My suggestion is to move to the New Testament this time, and after that we can go back to the Old Testament, and back and forth. If we decide to go into the N.T. I would suggest a study in Romans. Genesis was a foundation for the O.T. and Romans is a foundation in doctrine in the N.T. This is only a suggestion, do any of you have a suggestion?

I'd be interested in Exodus, as well. I think it is foundational for much of what Jesus, Paul, and others talk about in the NT and has lots of symbolism related to Jesus as the Messiah and to Rev. symbols. And I don't know it as I should, I'd really look forward to others comments.

Day 133 Monday 9/1/14 Genesis 49:5-7 Simeon & Levi.

Gen 49:5 "Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations."
Gen 49:6 "O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall."
Gen 49:7 "Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel."

To make this a little clearer, I am posting the ESV translation.

Gen 49:5 "Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords."
Gen 49:6 "Let my soul come not into their council; O my glory, be not joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen."
Gen 49:7 "Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel."

Simeon & Levi were apparently were the instigator's of the terrible slaughter of the Shechemites. They took their swords and killed all the men there in Shechem. Although they were terrible effected by the rape of their sister, that was no reason to take revenge on all the men. They should have sought out Shechem for his awful deed, and satisfied their rage on him.

Jacob makes it clear that he had nothing to do with their secret intentions to deceive the Shechemites and to kill them. I'm not sure why the text mentions that Simeon and Levi broke down a wall. It may have been that a small wall surrounded the house of Hamor and his son Shechem and that's what they breached to get at the two.

Because the scattering of Simeon & Levi is quite complex, I am posting what John Gill has to say about this. Compliments of e-Sword.

I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel; which he is said to do, because he foretold it would be done; as Jeremiah is said to root out and pull down kingdoms, because he prophesied thereof, Jer_1:10 and this was fulfilled in the tribes of Simeon and Levi; as for the tribe of Simeon, that had not a distinct part by itself in the land of Canaan, but had their inheritance out of the portion, and within the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, Jos_19:1 and their cities did not join to one another, as Aben Ezra observes, but lay scattered up and down in the tribe of Judah; and when they were increased and straitened for room, many of them went without the land, to the entrance of Gedor, where they of Ham, or the Egyptians, had dwelt, and others to Mount Seir in Edom, 1Ch_4:39 and it is a notion which prevails with the Jews, and which Jarchi takes notice of, that a great many of this tribe were scribes and teachers of the law, and even teachers of children, and by which they lived among the several tribes; and so the Jerusalem Targum,"I will divide the tribe of Simeon, that they may be scribes and teachers of the law in the congregation of Jacob.''And as for the tribe of Levi, it is well known that they had no inheritance in the land of Canaan, but had forty eight cities assigned them in the several tribes here and there; and thus Jacob's prophecy had an exact accomplishment.

Gen 49:6 Into their secret, come not, O my soul! Unto their assembly be not united, O mine honour; For in their anger they slew a man, And in their self-will eradicated a prince.

I looked this up in the Hebrew, and word that Young translates as 'prince' is shur, bull.

Thank you Deb. I love that!

I have changed my avatar from a big smile to a sobering study, praying, meditating, mode because I'm extremely concerned that all believers in Christ Jesus have come to a time of testing of ones faith, and I am aware that many believers are asleep concerning the "coming of the Lord." My efforts, charged by the power of the Holy Spirit, will be to advise and warn God's people to be ready each day, and watch expectantly.

Day 134 Tuesday 9/2/14 Genesis 49:8-12 Judah.

Judah, oh my, what a name and what a wonderful line of ancestors that our Savior will be birthed thru. This prophetic blessing that Jacob/Israel is pronouncing on his son, Judah has Jesus written all over it. Praise God in the highest!

Gen 49:8 "Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee."

Judah, of noble character was a born leader. His brothers looked up to him for direction and course of action. We remember Judah's name coming up many times during the Joseph story right up to meeting Joseph just before Joseph made himself known to his brothers....Judah, what a powerful Tribe. Certainly the prophesy of having his hand on the neck of his enemies come true in the life of David and other warriors of Almighty God. All Tribes eventually revere Judah's future generations culminating with the Messiah.

Gen 49:9 "Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?"

Here is a picture of a young lion who has caught his prey and devoured it on his mountain den. He is like a lioness who is guarding her cubs, who in the world would walk right up to her and kick one of the cubs? Ha, no one in their right mind! Even as a mature old lion, there is respect to his power and fear not to invade his territory.

Gen 49:10 "The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be."

A scepter is an emblem of sovereign rule. That reign of leaders will not depart from the Tribe of Judah. The picture of one who is sitting upon a throne making decisions or law, has his scepter between his feet as he rests his arms on it. That person who is from the descendant of Judah, will be the the scepter holder until Christ Jesus takes it up being the Spiritual Shiloh.

Gen 49:11 "Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes."
Gen 49:12 "His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk."

Apparently, in the lands occupied by the Tribes of Judah, they had exceptional soil to grow and cultivate the choicest of wines. Those vines were so sturdy, it was possible for the mules used to transport the fruit of the vine, to be secured to them. Such enjoyment from drinking the wine made from these vines were superior to others. Someone suggested that if consumed to excess, ones eyes would be bloodshot. Humor? I don't know.

At any rate, the Tribe of Judah stands out from the other Tribes as having the favor of God and would be the line of descendants that the long awaited Messiah would eventually come from.
