We're Getting Our CPL's

:eek2
I... I... um... I... :eek2

:lol I wondered if anyone would call me on that, lol. Yes I did, and not lightly either!

Most people won't teach their kids about guns...until they're old enough. But at age 1-6 kids are like a sponge, soaki g up information and learning. I had my kids up shooting at ~ age 4 and even mini-14's full prone off a rest.

I wouldn't take them small game hunting with me until I trusted them to walk behind me with a loaded firearm. They got intensive training from the start.
Knowing that there is no safety in ignorance, I made it a point to gunproof the kids. I set up shaken cans of soda and let them shoot them to demonstrate the guns power...then I'd pick up the split can and give it to them with the instruction to, fix it, make it better, this is what would happen if you shot mommy or your Brother...this is real not TV!! And so forth.
They caught on. I made em a deal. They could see a gun whenever they wanted, if they asked first. Then I'd go through a big dramatic, let's point it in a safe direction and make sure it's not loaded thing, to pound it in their head what to do.

If a child is given a chance, they'll learn to do things right. It took years for them to gain my confidence, but I started them early, I was small gaming with them by around age 8...and granted them permission to have (loaded) handguns in their room at age 10...protect mommy, save mommy, if you have to...

Understand that them having guns in their room was done with moms permission too! This should give an inkling to how intensive the training for the mommy to be good with it!

A year or so later, the kids were having a sleep over with a couple of their friends...
"Dad, can you come here for a minute?"...
Dad please take these pistols for the night, I'm not positive about one of those kids, and I do have to go to the bathroom sometimes...(as he handed me a pile of pistols...)

I was so proud of them at that moment, and very reassured as to the level of safety that was ingrained into them... :)

I can't count how many card games with friends were put on hold, so I could take a gun in for them to see. (At bedtime usually, lol)

They had to ask first every time. Then! They had to recite the 4 rules of gun safety first also...

(1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything that you're not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target, and what is behind it)

And then I would. Did they abuse it, asking to see a gun at bedtime to stay up a little longer? Absolutely. But I felt it imperative that I keep my word, that they could see a gun if they asked first. :)

Dad can I play with a gun?
No! We never play with guns, we handle them...:wink

Thanks, th1b.taylor. That's great information. We'll be going to some gun & knife shows, and I'll bring along notes like this I collect. :thumbsup

JohnDB that's interesting. We don't really do international travelling, but we do go on a cruise now and then. I suppose this will impact those trips.

Someone said anyone can register for a gun, buy one, and drive around with it on the dashboard. But once you get a CPL, you can't have it out like that anymore. Is that true? Crazy if it is! I wouldn't have a gun out like that anyway, but that's still a strange law.
Uhhhh, not in Michigan if my BIL is right, and he has a small arsenal.
For rifles, you have to have them unloaded and in a case, or they'll give you a ticket. I was told by not only my BIL, but also at the gun store that the gun should be in the box or a case and the clip either unloaded, or far, far away when driving.

If your looking for a good deal, AP Gunworks in Almont has some good deals. http://www.apgunworks.org/ I got a decent 9mm Ruggar for almost $100 of list price.

If your coming up 53, you've got Thumb Gun about 5 miles south of Almont. Last time I was in they had some pretty high prices, but it's on your way to AP, so why not.

having our door kicked in my the bad guys with guns was very scary... I have always been thankful my husband did not have to kill anyone. He used his 1894 Winchester to clobber the guy.. the bad guys shotgun went off in the ceiling ...the other 2 grabbed their friend of our floor and took off..
A gal I worked with worked from home. Last year she came home early from an event alone. She heard noises outside her window, so she called her son who told her to sit in the middle of her front room with pistol ready, and he was headed that way. For measure, he called the police.
When the police arrived, they caught a man in her bushes with a handgun...

That seems rather extreme, and I don't imagine too many people take apart their gun every time they get behind the wheel. I wonder if this is their recommendation as opposed to law. I'll check this out.

Not being a grammar Nazi, but you did mean $100 off of list price, right? Not for $100. I'll definitely check them out. Almont's not far away. Thanks! :thumbsup

Growing up we expected any gun to be loaded ... on the ranch the 22 was always behind the door for garden critters... We said mom dad going out to shoot gophers.. .. parents had some one visiting the kid about 5 found the gun and was pointing it at his mom.. My mom said Penny that gun is loaded.. penny told the kid to put int down he would not... it took a bit of being careful but mom got it... Penny stomped out to find dad and give him a piece of her mind.. Dad ended the conversation by strongly suggesting she make her kid mind. .. that was the last visit.. :)

Riddle!....

What is the purpose of a pistol?

:confused

That gun doesn't look like it's ever been fired. Where's the holster wear?

Lol :poke

ha, well you got me lol! I've only had the gun a few months and I've put less than 100 rounds through it. I keep shooting bottom left... seems I'm squeezing my whole hand instead of just the trigger. Not sure why I'm doing that with this one... The week of the 4th should be fun and she'll show some wear and I'll break my habit. It's odd how each gun shoots a bit differently. I've been told it's all in the grips.

Ha, if I got it for $100 it would have been in some alley in Detroit lol! It was $350 plus tax. It's went up. It only comes with one clip, but it holds 17 rounds. The other option in that price range was the Smith and Wesson SD9VE and it came with two clips. However, each clip only held 10 rounds and honestly, I didn't like the feel of the handgun. It was light and just felt cheap.

I'm sure everyone will agree, but if you want a nice handgun, get a Glock. But you'll pay for it.
One thing to note. If you plan to carry, they may point you in the direction of a shorter barrel because it makes the handgun smaller and easier to conceal. What you gain in concealment is lost in accuracy. And BTW, there is more to shooting a handgun than simply pointing and shooting. Like I said to Edward , each handgun is different and the grip makes a huge deal, as does position of your finger on the trigger. With my Ruger, I'm squeezing the trigger with my whole hand, and it's causing me to shoot bottom left on the paper. It's an easy one to correct but it shows the difference. With a 40, and no, I'm not referring to a Cobra 40 oz lol) anyway, I'm bulls eye every time.

You should see my 45. Bought new in 1984 and it's getting grey right along with me from holster wear. It gives it character.

I've never had a problem concealing a full size (5") 45acp. The longer barrel was in my pants (IWB) and didn't make it any less concealable. The increased weight and longer sight radius made it easier to shoot well. The thin pistol is really easy to conceal... with a good holster.

It's the grip that makes a pistol easy or hard to conceal and not the barrel length.

Ha! Nice!

Yeah that is a good one. Not only is it funny, but also has the ring of profound truth to it considering today's societal climate.

It would be somewhat of a tactical advantage for a husband/wife team to carry the same caliber, and perhaps even interchangeable magazines etc., but my wife, even though she liked shooting 45's, would not carry such a big pistol. She did like the officers model 45, but she had never shot one either!! (I have) and found that the short barrel (3.5") increased recoil and muzzle blast to the point of making it, not good for defense. So she settled on a 5 shot 38 special that she liked.

When I got our handguns, it was more for the thrill of shooting it with the justification of home defense. Personally, the shotgun is better in that area lol, and as you saw, we use cable locks, so it's useless for home defense.

I just like shooting cans and other targets. For me, it's just an expensive hobby that I get a bang out of!

Thanks for all the additional information, Jeff. I saw the Ruggar you were talking about on the AP website. We're doing our training at the Brown Bear gun range about two miles from our house. I don't expect you know it.

The Gibraltar Trade Center always has huge gun & knife shows, so we'll check those out. How do you guys feel about buying used guns? Is there a caution with them? We'll be picking up a few of them, and the money trees in my back yard aren't exploding with growth. :)

Check the action of them. Look for wear of parts. Sure it's cleaned up for display and sale...but how much use has it had?

Age usually doesn't mean use...and some have sat around for a long time with no use whatsoever.
But some have had rough handling and tons of ammo put through them.

Buying new is of course best... buying used from an individual is kinda risky. Depending upon the situation.
Look on Craigslist. See what shows up. Maybe something that you will like. But it's going to take patience and shopping to come up with a great deal for something that is not "hot".
