We're Getting Our CPL's

Thanks for all the additional information, Jeff. I saw the Ruggar you were talking about on the AP website. We're doing our training at the Brown Bear gun range about two miles from our house. I don't expect you know it.

The Gibraltar Trade Center always has huge gun & knife shows, so we'll check those out. How do you guys feel about buying used guns? Is there a caution with them? We'll be picking up a few of them, and the money trees in my back yard aren't exploding with growth. :)

The only used firearms I have, I received them from my BIL, and he knows his guns pretty well. I got a 22 rifle from him and he got it from a buddy he knew and trusted as a trade. He told me the only thing wrong was it would need a good cleaning. After firing 20 rounds, it was clear the cleaning couldn't wait, so I tore the entire action apart, cleaned it and put it back together. Honestly, and you know I'm mechanical, but I got a little nervous with all them small pieces. But I managed.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you don't know anything about guns, you could look at a flaw and think it was a feature. You might even pay more for that feature, either at the trade show, or once you get it home if you know what I mean.

My suggestion to you, is make your first purchase and experience at the range a fun time. Buy new and avoid having to learn. Well, unless you buy used from a reputable gun store who is straight with you.

Growing up we expected any gun to be loaded ... on the ranch the 22 was always behind the door for garden critters... We said mom dad going out to shoot gophers.. .. parents had some one visiting the kid about 5 found the gun and was pointing it at his mom.. My mom said Penny that gun is loaded.. penny told the kid to put int down he would not... it took a bit of being careful but mom got it... Penny stomped out to find dad and give him a piece of her mind.. Dad ended the conversation by strongly suggesting she make her kid mind. .. that was the last visit.. :)
Good call on both your dad and Penny... probably saved a life.

Look on Craigslist.
Yeah, I don't think I'll be meeting dude out at his farm to respond to an ad about his gun, unless it's my second gun and I'm packing when I go there. :wink

Yeah, this is probably best for me, now that I think about it. You and John had good advice. For someone who knows more about them, buying used would make more sense. One good thing is that I won't be dizzy with options, because new guns quickly get out of my price range.

Honestly Mike How often would you shoot it? I can shoot mine every day of the week in my back yard but I'm lucky to shoot just a few times a year, and that's mostly skeet or cans with the 22 rifle.

The hand gun is fun, but it hurts my ears because the barrel is so short and even with ear plugs, it's just barely bearable. That means I need to invest in those fancy ear muffs.... More money.

I see the 6 shooter 22 handguns new for $139 and ammo is cheap and I'll bet it don't hurt your ears when you shoot it.

Fill it full of hollow points and if you ever need it for home protection, take a head shot and a shot to the chest, then heart. I'm sure the head shot will stop them cold.

Don't under estimate a 22. My dad killed many deer in his life with a 22. I know people view them as toys, but lots of people get killed each year by them toys. Sure, it's not going to do the damage that a hollow point 9mm gonna deliver, but the perpetrator will die pretty quick with a well placed round from a 22, and you'll have 6 chances.

No, you won't have the Dirty Harry bragging rights with a 22, but your not buying a gun for the bragging rights, right?

I watched some penetration tests on youboob with22lr's, and I came away from it thinking differently about 22 hollowpoints.

The 22lr needs all the help it can get for potential defensive use, and the ballistic gel comparison between solids and HP's told a very enlightening story.

Hollowpoint 22s dont penetrate very well unless you're running Stingers out of a rifle. I think the way to go with 22's out of a pistol is HV solids (for defense).

With 22's, penetration is your friend.

Great advice Edward !

For cost and enjoyment, I'm thinking a 22 might be a good first gun for Mike And with the right rounds and some good target practice it would serve him for home protection.

If later her wants to move up to a bigger gun, he might feel more comfy getting a used one.

You know more about guns than I do. What way would you steer him?

We've somewhat recently begun spending time with some old friends who live on a lot of acreage in Armada. We were there with about 5 other couples a few weeks ago when I mentioned we were talking more seriously about finally doing this, and it turned out I was the only guy there who didn't carry. The guy who's house we were at brought out gun after gun after gun, pistols, rifles and shotguns. He had one classic rifle, like a musket, with a rod to pack it from the barrel end.

Another guy there was a prepper. He lives in Rochester Hills in a beautiful home, and he has a safe house buried below in his back yard with a month of supplies to live! Dude has night vision, x-ray, satellite vision.

And here's me... derp, derp, derp. I'm telling them, so Julie and I Julie and I are going for our CPL's. Then I found out I was surrounded by more metal than the mafia. What a little girl... :lol

I know of an ex-Navy SEAL who carries a .22 revolver for SD. Don't remember what flavor of .22.

Thats easy :) a 5" Ruger MKII pistol. Ive owned and shot slews of these pistols and love 'em. I favor the 5" bull barrel model. They're phenomenally accurate and love CCI Mini-mags both solids and HP's!

Theyre not made of plastic. Not too small or too large, are reliable with a wide assortment of ammo, accurate, and its a good solid gun. Both mine were bought used. Both work fantastic. Its a great belt gun, not many rabbits got away, lol.

They have good adjustable sights on them. This is the gun that put Ruger on the map. Ruger's first gun, though back then it was a MKI
They're up to MKIII's now, so you may have to buy a MKII used, Im not positive. I have no experience with MKIII's so dont know if they're better or not. I do know MKII's and wouldnt be afraid to buy a used one. It's big enough that its real easy to shoot well, but not too big or heavy to carry a lot. (I have lol)...

There was a story going around about some (Israeli?) agent girl that got surprised by 5 taliban...and she killed all 5 of them, with a ruger MKII.
Wow. Hadda be head shots prolly, right? I believe it, its no big feat to tag pop cans at a full 25 yards with a MKII.
If youre in the market for a good 22 pistol, you cant go wrong with a MKII.

My 2nd choice in a 22 pistol would be a Walther P22. This one is made of plastic and scaled down to pocket pistol size, though it still holds 10 rounds like the MKII. Super light and a short 3.4" barrel...not as accurate as a MKII but will sure do the job up close. Its a da/sa so you dont really need to use the safety, as it carries and shoots 1st shot like a da revolver (or lets you give a dud 22 a 2nd chance to fire by just pulling the trigger again), a nice feature.

Something like this looks good, especially for da wife. I think I'll focus on 22's for both of us, as they seem like a good first gun to own. That message of yours before this one I quoted was riddled with terms I couldn't keep up with. Google Translate couldn't help me either. I realize you were responding to Jeff, but you've gotta dumb down your talk if newbies like me are gonna make any sense of it. Lol

Mike
This is one of our funniest guns to shoot. It's kind of a pain to load the powder, put the patch and ball in and ram it down, then replace the cap for each shot. But when you pull the trigger, wow, what a rush.
She's loud, but it's not a sharp piercing loud. It's more of that deep base kinda loud. And she pushes gently back into you, unlike the shotgun that snaps into your shoulder with a high powered round.

Concealed Pistol License, if anyone doesn't know.

I went most of my life without considering it, and here I am almost 50, and my wife and I are doing it. We've talked about it for a while, and here we go. Part of our reasoning is safety related, but part is the concern that this will only get more difficult to do in the future. While we can, we want to do it.

So I have a question for those of you who carry that might seem out of place on a Christian discussion board. What do you suggest for a first gun? Any definite do's and do not's?

Besides that, any other discussion about getting a CPL would be interesting.

I did the class several years ago. (A prerequiste in my state to get the CC permit.) During the class the instructor noted in my state that every time a police officer pulls you over they can see if you have a CC permit when they run your plates, so USE EXTREME CAUTION.

I tote a very small Dayton 380, either in my cowboy boots or on a waste backstrap holster. It's very tiny, but deadly enough for my purposes. Fortunately I've never had to shoot anyone after 6 decades of life and probably don't expect to at this point, but ya never know nowdays.

In God we trust. All others will be looked up with Godlike suspicion.

I've never really thought of a .22 as much of a self-defense weapon. Unless hit is a seriously vital area, wouldn't a would-be attacker just continue his/her assault with little effect, at least for a little while?

Carrying a .22 isn't so much about killing someone as it is about making the carrier believe they are safe.
Do you really think Mike is gonna go out and become a vigilante?
No, I think he'll carry it a while, feel really uncomfortable with it and then get rid of it.
I think the underlying reasons are obvious.
He's trusted God all his life but now he's gonna start trusting a gun in his hands instead?
I don't think so.
Some people have to work that out the hard way.
