What is the right way to interpret Jesus' teachings regarding divorce?

I was looking at that verse, but then it dawned on me that Jesus forgives all our sins, including that one.
Jesus forgives everything we do wrong.
In the verse above, the woman has been defiled, yet if she goes to Jesus and asks forgiveness, then she will receive it.
They didn't have that choice back in those days.

O Allen, you hit the nail right on it's head. Hey, isn't it great that you and I live in New Testament times? The resurrection of our Savior was like a mighty strong wind. It picked us up out of the Law to the Jews and plotted us right down in the center of Yahshua Jesus' love and grace. Now, we can shout from the rooftops "I'm Forgiven, I'm Forgiven, Halleluyah I'm Forgiven!!

I agree that education plays a significant role in these situations and this is why God says to "renew the mind".

People that are informed about the decisions that they make have less chance of deciding impulsively.

If they acted impulsively in such a serious decision shows that they didn't take God's advice to begin with so the question of divorce being part of God's advice is a moot point isn't it?

No, it's never a moot point. Repentance, guidance, etc ...

No,i am talking about this thread specifically,if somebody didn't educate themselves like God says so they end up in that bad situation then are they going to now follow His advice on how to get out of that situation?... Probably not.

What does Jesus really say about marriage and divorce?
Oct 24, 2014

I can think of a Hell on earth as being that of one married to the wrong person and finding that out after the vows. There are as we who have dated know , pretenders out there. They'll figure out what a man or woman is looking for and using causal conversation. And then they'll become that to get what they want. That man or woman.
When married the mask falls and the real them appears. Should that mean a life long union with that falsity? What if they're offensive? I'd say no.
The article is a very good guide to discussions such as this in my opinion. It takes on the arguments some make about no such thing as divorce according to God, and other particulars.

In my opinion if it is unbearable, get away. God knows what you are going through. And it doesn't mean you have to remain without love, or a good marriage due to your choosing to rescue yourself from a bad one.
May we all find the man or woman God wants for us first thing. But if we don't let us realize if we're desiring divorce we can't say that isn't God leading us out of what we chose for ourselves, so as to find the one he knows is best for us.

This is a significant point!

To illustrate, when I was married I could have gotten an annulment within a few months. I should have; the circumstances were as you described and there was never really any 'appointment for two to walk together,' let alone two joining together to become one.

I knew of no such process as 'annulment,' and did my level best to somehow "make" the marriage work, always looking for what else I could do. All the patience and diligence in the world couldn't make up for the fact that after the mask came off, we were two people that had no business being together.

Scripture talks about being called to Peace

Amen!
I knew a couple that stayed together for the sake of their child. Even after their kid was an adult they were together but because they'd pretty much resigned themselves to being in the relationship itself. The guy had affairs pretty much the whole marriage and including having kids out of wedlock with at least one other woman.
Meanwhile the wife always dreamed about getting away but never did. They died hating each other. But they lived together for the sake of their son.

That's a horrible way to live. It was a different time when Jesus was giving his instructions to the Jews, remember. Not gentiles.
Imagine if we lived according to the laws that pertained to them today. Yikes!

Do what you feel will save your life. Simple as that. Who cares what anyone thinks if you divorce and you're Christian? Let them live their life and you live yours as you see fit. If you're in a marriage that is so intolerable that you want OUT! Get out!
Because of all that is holy God knows your situation. If it is that bad you're not with the one God wants you to be with. Take that as his message to leave and find the right one. For both your sake. If you're miserable in your side of the relationship your partner is too.

There's a pastor on TV who condemns divorce no matter what. He's an idiot. Sadly, when the camera pans to his wife she always looks like she's about to cry.

Why even ask the question Christians will do as they please disregarding what the Scripture say.. Then be applauded for doing/saying so..

Well, there's nothing in scripture that says a woman can divorce if her husband is violently abusive.

Is it OK for a woman to divorce such a man?
Or should she leave him and stay without a healthy marriage for the rest of her life?Because the bible says she cannot remarry as long as the brute lives.

The Scriptures say what they say. People will do as they please.. Do we as christians trust the Lord? Do we honor His Word? Do we do what we feel?

We always do what we feel. Honoring God's word doesn't mean living in a violent relationship. If we can escape, we can't say that isn't the Lord leading us to trust him and divorce our abuser.
The scriptures say what they say. Yes, but do they say use a computer? A phone? Drive a car?
The scriptures say God does not change. The scriptures say Emmanuel is God. Do we follow what God said in the old testament to the Jews?
Jesus in the new testament didn't focus on divorce and give directives the way it is done in the old testament.

Would Jesus want a woman to remain in an abusive relationship?
Why is it that the old testament statements concerning marriage are said to be binding today, but when it comes to certain matters as a new testament Christian we often hear, well that was for the Jews. That was the old testament. We're living the new covenant today.

If I were in a violent marriage I'd leave as soon as I was able after the first assault. God made me in his image and likeness. Unless he's a punching bag, I would have every right to decide this temple that carries the holy spirit God is not to be vandalized or abused.
I'd rather ask God to forgive me saving myself from a man who wants to kill me, which is what a physically abusive spouse or boyfriend is intending, than know with my last breath that because I stayed to be beaten over and over , this time my family and friends will be praying to God for mercy on my soul.

It reminds of the day when dueling was socially acceptable, lol

Riiiight.

She's right. Jesus didn't back out when they began scourging Him. We're to emulate Him.
Besides, how would you know, if this was or wasn't your cross to bear upon this earth? Maybe it is?! But you would quit?!!!

Generally, I think the Catholic Bible and the NIV translation are both, uh, from the far side so to speak. You all may know that I had an NIV Bible, and the Lord supernaturally changed it from an NIV to a NKJV. I didn't ask for this or pray for it or anything. He just did it. There are multiple witnesses to this. If you'd like to hear the whole testimony, just ask.

But back on topic, Divorce was a concession given to the people from God through Moses. An act of mercy, but it was not always so, is what it says. So ultimately, divorce is wrong for any reason. However, it is better to marry than to burn, so it is forgivable.

I wrestled with this a little after my Wife left me. The book said to me, no no no, but the entire world told me it is ok (LOL). I decided to get remarried but over a period of time, I came to realize that I was justifying my will, just like reba said.

Reba doesn't speak for God.
Reba as we all do shares her opinion.

To be quite honest, the very fact that Jesus suffered and died on the cross is reason enough to realize he gave his life for ours. And when we're in a dire situation like a violent marriage no one in their right state of mind, especially when they're in the body of gentle Christ, would ever say a woman should stay and suffer because God wants her to.
Nor would anyone who knows God is love and those who know God know love, would ever argue a woman or man should never know love because they think God wants them to stay in their first marriage though it is abusive and unloving.
Or that they when separated should live without knowing a loving marriage. Because again, they're told and believe God expects that of them.

There are psycho's in prison that justify their evil as , God told me to.
Do we believe that? Would God do such a thing?
Of course not.
Would God then say, woman, man, you're being beaten and your spouse wants you dead every time they raise their hand, but you must stay! Stay! Because when you married you agreed to stay! For life.
In a violent marriage that commitment can come to fruition rather quickly.

Ask yourself, why would anyone argue a woman in a violent marriage say, stay!

Are you married? Are you a Christian?
The new board setup doesn't show that when I click on your ID link.

I'm a Christian but not married because I've learned from others mistakes regarding that.

I am a Christian witness.
