One of his commandments was that 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God".

To me this speaks of the Command in the Garden, that man was to only partake of the tree of life as his source.

Loving God is to not have any other source than Him.

No other gods.

Hi Chopper,
What a wonderful thread.
Everytime works or eternal salvation is the theme, the commandments are always brought up.

Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep my commandments".
(NASB)

So, yes, it's very important to know which commandments Jesus is speaking of.
I often hear that we are no longer under the law but are now under grace.
I've heard one person say explicitly that he is not required to obey. We were speaking about obeying GOD. As if one could choose not to obey God.

Jesus said that He did not come to aboish the law, but to fultill it.
Mathew 5:17 Some take this to mean that He did it all and so now we have nothing to do. In Mathew 5:18 Jesus clearly said that not even the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away, but this is ignored.

In Mathew 5:19 He says that anyone teaching that the law has passed will be the least in the Kingdom. This is also ignored.

I could go on about this since Mathew 5:20 is the key, but enough of this.

Let me say that Yes, Jesus did abolish the civil law and the ceremonial law.
He DID NOT abolish the moral law. How could He? GOD IS MORAL. You cannot sparate God from morality. It's a part of His being.

So what are Jesus' commandments?
If we're honest, they are written all over the gospels.
He goes beyond even the 10 commandments. Jesus demands an internal change, and not only an external action.

He not only does not want us to lie, He wishes that we do not WANT to lie ourselves, just as He doesn not want us to.

I'd start at the beatitudes in Mathew 5.
I'd go to bearing good fruit in Mathew 7.
Being the salt of the earth, being a memeber of the Kingdom of which He speaks so often. It's a pearl, a hidden treasure, a net. The wicked do not belong in the Kingdom, only the pure in heart.

The 10 commandments show us how to be pure in heart.
The two commandments Jesus left us with will cover all the others.
If we love God and ourselves and our neighbor, we will not wish to do harm to God, ourself or our neighbor. The decalogue is necessary to understand exactly what it is we're not supposed to DO.

And Jesus takes it to an internal change where we do not WANT to do.

So the commandments are everything Jesus taught.
He said "Follow Me".
He said "Be perfect like My Father in heaven is perfect".

He also said "My yoke is easy and My burden is light".
The Holy Spirit is our paraclete so that we can keep the commandments to the best of our ability.

Repent
Seek first God
Forgive
Deny yourself
Believe
Be the light
Be born again
Bear good fruit
Be the salt
Receive the Holy Spirit
Feed the hungry
Cloth the naked
Visit the sick
Be baptized
Wash one another's feet
Take up your cross daily
Pray
Be of good cheer
Beware false prophets
Be merciful
Hold fast
Love one another
Be of one mind
Be patient
Lend expecting nothing in return
Preach the gospel

and much more...
Which is why it's easier to just remember the Two Great Commandments...

Very good Sister Friend. Thank you for such a good list of commands in the 10, and in Matthew 5. That's a "Chopper Home Run"

Ok fair enough, But if I'm not mistaken (which I admit I may be) this commandment was directed at ha satan and I think for our benefit well before the incident at the garden. It was very specific in that every word not just a few select words are to be followed. Too me when we do obey it is the only proof we have that we do in fact love God. Chasing after what is pleasing to our own eyes would indicate we love ourselves more than Him and His instruction for us. Its no different than any other parent child relationship.

Torah is not meant to be a burden in fact we are told it is not. In that regard Devarim has probably the most encouraging words for us and goes on to equate loving our Father is by being obedient children.

For this commandment which I command you this day, is not concealed from you, nor is it far away.
It is not in heaven, that you should say, "Who will go up to heaven for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?"
Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, "Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?"
Rather,[this] thing is very close to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can fulfill it.
Behold, I have set before you today life and good, and death and evil, inasmuch as I command you this day to love Yehovah, your God, to walk in His ways, and to observe His commandments, His statutes, and His ordinances, so that you will live and increase, and Yehovah, your God, will bless you in the land to which you are coming to take possession of it.
But if your heart deviates and you do not listen, and you will be drawn astray, and you will prostrate yourself to other deities and serve them,
I declare to you this day, that you will surely perish, and that you will not live long days on the land, to which you are crossing the Jordan, to come and take possession thereof.
This day, I call upon the heaven and the earth as witnesses [that I have warned] you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. You shall choose life, so that you and your offspring will live;
To love Yehovah your God, to listen to His voice, and to cleave to Him. For that is your life and the length of your days, to dwell on the land which Yehovah swore to your forefathers to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob to give to them.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law
5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
5:18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
5:19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
I think the above is the crux of the discussion. Jesus obviously fulfilled most if not all the ceremonial/purity laws (e.g. atonement, peace etc). The judicial laws were for the Mosaic covenant as a nation set apart unto God. So we don't stone people to death for Mosaic civil and moral law violations as the Church was not given this 'power' by Christ, only the command to preach the Gospel and make disciples and baptize them.

On a 'macro' level I think that leaves us with the moral law as you note in Matthew chapter 5 Jesus confirms His kingdom citizens would follow such laws. But notice most of Matthew 5 is from a positive perspective. He uses "blessed."

Excellent words my friend. I love the Old Covenant. YHWH and His Word is my life's instruction. I absolutely love just Who He is. Jesus is the exact representation of His Father, and He is my life, truth and the way in the New Covenant thru the Blood of Yahshua.

If we could only live each day according to Matthew five, this would be a different life example to the world and the Church of Christ Jesus.

Amen. I will try to get through more of the MacArthur sermons series on Christ and the Law this week. Should have time tomorrow through Thursday.

There are laws (commandments) that were especially written just for the Hebrews pertaining to the rituals of the Temple, sacrifices, festivals, Torah, Kohanim and Levites, the King and the Nazarite and then there are the existing moral laws (commandments) for all of us to still follow as in prayers and blessings, love and brotherhood, the poor and unfortunate, treatment of the Gentiles, Marriage, divorce and family, forbidden sexual relations, business practices, employees and servants, vows, oaths, swearing, Court and Judicial procedures, injuries and damages, property and property rights, Criminal laws, prophecy, idolatry and all its practices as the moral laws (commandments) keep us in line with the will of God that we present ourselves a vessel of honor that God delights in as we allow the light of Christ shine in us and through us as a testimony of Gods grace and mercy as it is not ourselves that do any good thing, but Gods Spirit working in us and through us as we surrender our will to that of Gods will to be done.

Matthew 22:
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 5:
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

It's within the moral laws that we keep Gods commandment of love God and love your neighbor.

...Gods Spirit working in us and through us as we surrender our will to that of Gods will to be done...
...It's within the moral laws that we keep Gods commandment of love God and love your neighbor.
I agree.
"The Holy Spirit does not abolish the Old law, the exterior command: he makes that same law interior to ourselves, so that doing God's will becomes now no longer a work of fear but a work of spontaneous love" - Thomas Merton, Life and Holiness, p. 35.

Hi folks. This post may shake up a few of you. When I speak to YHWH each morning before I get into His Word to me and you, I ask for Truth. I no longer rely on my Baptist roots and teachings. I seek revelation from the Spirit of Elohim. First of all, I'd like to put you on to my favorite Jewish Theologian, yes he's a Christian. His name is Alan Horvath. Here is his website....
.

The reason I'm including Alan's teachings is, I have used God's real Name for quite a while now, and Alan tells why.

As most of you know, I'm an avid student of the Old Covenant, and have been for several years. NOW, Please get this!!
RIGHTEOUSNESS that leads to salvation can only come by repentance and forgiveness of sins, by believing & trusting in Christ Jesus' (Yahshua) death on the cross & His shed Blood for the remission of our sins.

Following the Old Covenant Commands, Statues, and rules, does not save anyone. DOES NOT SAVE ANYONE!! Understand? BUT those Commands, Statues, and Rules, except the Jewish Sabbath, are well worth living and observing for the Christian, along with all the New Covenant Commands Of Yahshua Jesus.

For those of you who stick only with the New Covenant or Testament, will only understand about half of the Truth of how to live in this Kingdom age, and be prepared to enter the finalized Kingdom when Yahshua returns to take us there when He gathers us up before the tribulation period.

Here is how you pronounce the Name of God: Jesus, the Name above every Name.

The Name the Father gave to His Son.

I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. John 17:11 NIV

YHWH are the consonants of the full name that was kept a mystery until the Son of God was revealed and died for our sins.

YĕHoWsHuwa`- Joshua: Jesus is the English word

YĕHoWsHuwa` - Joshua means: The Lord is Salvation

Jesus is YHWH, the Son, who is given the name above every name, the same name as the Father.

Let's start a thread about this subject, as I will not derail your very important subject you have going here.

Your idea of a new thread on the Hebrew/Aramaic Names is a good idea. Will you please start it?

To me this speaks of the Command in the Garden, that man was to only partake of the tree of life as his source.

That statement would be incorrect. The commandment in the Garden was that man may eat of ANY tree that was in the Garden, including the tree of Life. The command in the Garden was specific; there is only one tree he was commanded to NOT to partake of, and that was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But for some, they equate the knowledge of death with life, and claim darkness for their light.

You make a good point.

Quotes from the article about Nehemia Gordon -

  • He has even published several books on the subject of Jesus, who he openly rejects as Messiah.
  • Fellow Karaites have accused Gordon of compromise because of his Christian affiliations, while many Christian leaders have noted Gordon's teachings among Christians explicitly subvert the biblical teachings on who Jesus is and accuse Gordon of seeking to covertly lead Christians away from the Christian faith.

Denying Jesus as the Christ or Messiah is the bible definition of anti-christ.

Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 1 John 2:22

Thanks JLB, but I still have trouble accepting that proposition as well. You see, Adam was created a LIVING soul. Why did he need a source for life if he was created a living being? He only needed a source for life after he broke the one commandment given to him when he partook of the fruit of knowledge and died. The commandment was to that he should not eat of the tree of knowledge or he would surely die. He already was a living being, he didn't require a source for life. He was life. It was only after he ate of the tree of knowledge that he became cut off from the tree of Life, to prevent them from acquiring eternal life again from the dead.

But that is where Christ comes in. It is Christ who is our source for Life now that we are dead, having consumed the fruit of the knowledge of sin and death for ourselves. It was the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil that OPENED the eyes of Adam to SIN and DEATH. And like Adam, the Lord calls unto us in Christ, waiting for us to answer. Christ is now our source for Life has he leads us back to paradise and the tree of Life.

By the knowledge of the Law, my eyes were opened to sin and death. But when the Lord called and I answered, he closed my eyes to sin, so that I might look upon my Sin. He has closed my eyes to sin, and he has sealed the words of the book that I might walk according to Faith. For it is by Faith that we can hear the voice of the Lord as he leads us by the way.

Sin by the knowledge of the law: Idolatry, murder, violence, hate, pride, etc..... He has closed my eyes to sin, so that I might look upon my Sin. And when I looked upon my sin, I found there to be only ONE COMMANDMENT.

Of all the trees in the garden you may eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it. For in the day that you eat the fruit thereof you shall surely DIE.

For I was alive once without the Law. But when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. (Rom 7:9)
