The Personal Name of God: “Jehovah”


“5. ‘Jehovah’ - The name most distinctive of God as the God of Israel is Jehovah .... The meaning may with some confidence be inferred ... to be that of the simple future, yahweh, ‘he will be.’ It does not express causation, nor existence in a metaphysical sense, but the covenant promise of the Divine presence, both at the immediate time and in the Messianic age of the future.... So the ASV properly translated the thousands of places in the Holy Scriptures where this Holy Name appears as “Jehovah.” Unfortunately the vast majority of Bibles today still follow the dishonest tradition of changing those thousands of instances into “LORD.”

In those translations, what does LORD mean?

There is no Jehovah in the NT but theos (God) and kurios (Lord). The New World Translation of the JW Bible has incorrectly translated theos as Jehovah in the NT.

"LORD" is the mistranslation of God's personal name, "YHWH" [transliterated into English as "Jehovah/Yahweh/Yehowah"]. "LORD" used in most Bibles today is a replacement word for God's only personal name. YHWH does not mean "Lord"! It is not even a transliteration into English as are most personal names in the Bible.

Whether you use "Jehovah," "Yahweh," or "Yehowah," you are using the attempt of the Bible translators to treat the name with the same respect as they have treated other names such as "Jesus," "James," "Jeremiah," etc.

The translators of the NWT give much information within their Bibles explaining (footnotes for each instance and Appendix explanation) why they have replaced the Greek word for "Lord" in the Greek NT text with "Jehovah" in about 200 places in the NT. They readily admit that the existing manuscripts (3rd or 4th century) all use "Lord" at these places, but since they are found in quotes from or references to OT uses of YHWH, they have chosen to replace what was being quoted with the belief that the original inspired writers would not have changed the very name of God as it is written many thousands of times in the OT.

It is their belief that the name was changed by copyists in the following centuries following the original writings.

The clearly explained usage of "Jehovah" in the NT by the NWT translators in each Bible does not begin to compare with the (often unexplained) uses of the thousands of clearly mistranslated uses of "LORD" in the OT of most other Bibles.
