Why be Christian over Jew?

No debating please, this subform says it's not for that!

I just keep hearing and seeing about how highly God sees Jews and how the old testament is targeting them so... why aren't we Jews? I get this question has been exhausted.

I haven't finished my bible yet. I'm hoping for scripture to back up why Christianity is the right way to go, most compelling would be something from the old testament, the bible is in part, known for it's foreshadowing language :)

I say this because in the new testament things like when Jesus said he is the only way are common talking points.. buuut.. there are messianic Jews.

Thanks all, hope your year went well!

It's a bit more then that .

It's that God promised to save a remnant out of Israel .the debate is rather is it a national location of Israel or Israel that say like my family who live in America and get saved.?

Hi Prim,
By the time you are finished reading through the entire bible, hopefully you will be able to see that the things of the OT were pre-sages (foreshadowings) or "types" that are fulfilled by the NT and Jesus Christ.
For instance...the ark.
The ark is a "type" fulfilled by Jesus Christ. As eight people were saved from the filthy world in the OT, all mankind has the ability to be saved from the filth of the world "in Christ".
Jesus is the ark.
Other things that presaged Jesus are the sacrificial lamb of Passover, the sacrifices for sin, the judges nd kings of Israel, the flame that preceded the Israelites in the desert, the rock from which the water came forth during the same time in the desert.
Jonah's three days in the great fish foretold Jesus' time in the tomb.

Messianic Jews walk the same path as Christians.
They too love God with all their heart, soul, and mind: and they love their neighbor as they love themselves.

Many verses in Book of Isaiah in OT .

I don’t think Judaism in general is big on conversion. It’s largely a cultural thing now…many Jews are not religious. And…
Scripture speaks of Christian’s as being grafted onto the tree 🌴. In Christ any human being can be forgiven washed and made clean 🧽.

A "christian' is a follower of the Messiah (the Christ.)

"Christianity" didn't begin as a new religion, but the fulfillment of the Jewish faith.

By Jewish criteria, to be a Jew, your real mother and/or father must be a Jew as well; if not, then you're not, simple as that.

why aren't we Jews?
It's a good question and my answer is that the old testament law does not save, it shows that we are sinners. Romans 2:

Romans 2
New International Version
God’s Righteous Judgment
2 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”[a] 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

As the others have said Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and its ultimate sacrifice for sins.
As Hebrews 1says:- 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
Hebrews shows that Jesus dealt with our sins, a other quote shows even more graphically why we are Christ ians and not Jews.
1 Cor 15:14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.

In this Paul shows that if Jesus didn't rise from the dead we have no hope of heaven, only condemnation as sinners.

Hope this long set of quotes helps.

Hey All,

We are Christians because Jesus is risen PrimFinallyFoundGod. We believe Him to be the Messiah promised in the Old Testament. Jews do not believe Jesus is the Messiah. So they are still waiting for Messiah to come.

Ask your question in Jewish forum. You will get an answer from a Jewish perspective.

Keep walking everybody.
May God bless,

Good question - and one that has been debated back and forth for centuries. I have personally seen what are probably the 2 most extreme positions; one being that all true believers are in fact Jews - promoted by a group following the "Two House" theory. Their position was that every single believer in the world today is actually a decedent of Jacob. (everyone is a Jew) I emailed the leaders with proof that could not possibly be so - that a tribe on one of the most remote Philippine islands had been cut off from everyone else (until the 20th century) since BEFORE the time of Abraham. And that missionaries had huge success there. Clearly no descendants of Jacob there.

The other extreme was originated in 19th century Germany that posited the main reason for the Virgin Birth was to ensure NO JEWISH BLOOD was in our Lord. And that one is the source of much antisemitism in the church today.

Another odd one is called "Replacement Theology." It posits that God disowned the Jews and all Christians today are the "New Chosen People" or "Spiritual Israel." The bible recognizes no such group.

A Messianic Rabbi named Asher Intrater once said that "God only ever made one religion: Tabernacle Judaism. And God only ever made one way of salvation: The death and resurrection of the Messiah." His implication was clear: that God never intended to there being a separation between Judaism and Christianity. Christianity was to be a New Covenant Judaism or Judaism 2.0.

And this is what Messianic Judaism tries to be. Both sides (traditional rabbinic Judaism and early Gentile Christianity) rejected the other in the late 2nd century. Acts 15 and 21 both address the issue of Jews and Gentiles in the believing community. There is room and guidelines for both.

Hey All,
Interesting question PrimFinallyFoundGod. Take this into your consideration; the apostles were Jewish. It would have been easy to take the church into Judaism. But what was their commission from Jesus?

Matthew 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The apostles were told to proclaim the good news of what Jesus did for them. So it was Jesus, through His disciples, that started the church. Further, remember what Jesus told Peter?

Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

So, short answer, Jesus started the church.

Keep walking everybody.
May God bless,

It's proven Jesus walked the earth. The Old Testament points out that Jesus came to fulfill the law. Everything leads us to this including that a messiah was coming and he would come from the line of King David. Pharasees only focused very strictly on the Torah. They were mad when Jesus healed someone on the sabbath. They were interested in rituals ect. When Jesus fulfilled the prophecies. Even secular scholars agree he was crucified, but he came back and his followers were executed because they would not change their position that Jesus rose from the dead. Why would they do that. There are good books on this.Jesus wasn't recognized by his own people. Isreal always went back and forth with God, but is the apple of his eye. This man Jesus has been talked about for 2,000 years for people counting only when he came. It started long ago and then Jesus came around 5 century long ago. Faith, hope and love. Jesus is our redeemer. People are set free from their bondage of sin because of Jesus. The NT lines up with the old testament. It's about a relationship not rituals and he came to free us from the law of sin and death. It's personal that is why we recognize and remember to do communion and baptism and passover ect. But those aren't rituals because Jesus said do this in remembrance of me. God wants us to keep are hand upon Isreal and pray for them. He's got this. Clarity will come in its time. He will return.

Jesus forgives. Who is this who claims we can find forgiveness in him. (Which we all need). We don't need forgiveness. (Everyone needs forgiveness. They are not God. All have sinned). They found he did nothing wrong, but was still crucified. The resurrection proved we can abide in the lord and we are saved, being saved and will be saved. We can have that personal relationship. We see it's effects from thousands and thousands of years. We have that hope. We can overcome because he did. The jews need and we are not the savior just messengers. That is why they turn away from Christians because they don't need us who are Christian to save them, like we are trying to fix them. We just need to pray and stand with them.

There are Jews who are Christians

In matthew 25 it is about a pharasees (higher experts on the law meaning torah) got upset when Jesus healed on the sabbath. The jews didn't recognize Jesus when he came. Torah is a big thing for them, but they don't understand. They also do not believe Jesus as savior. The pharasees were obsessed with the law. They missed the whole point. An example is something I saw on Andy Griffith. I am not saying jews do any of this I just want to help you understand a concept. Andy said, " There is a sign that says no swimming." You read the sign and you see someone drowning. Do you break the law to save them? Of course! I'm not saying jews would not do this. I am trying to show a concept. The bible talks a lot about pharasees. Of course not all jews are like the pharasees. Jesus was born a jew, but it is about him being our savior of sins. In the bible it reads that they yelled, " who is this that he forgives sins?! It was prophesied that the messiah, Jesus would come. He came through the line of David of royalty, but instead served. He fulfilled all the prophecies. Jews have their rituals that are hard to explain. It's more religious and they don't have the assurance or trust and only believe hebrew old testament. They didn't make room for the new testament which concludes things. it is historically true Jesus came, died crucified, had disciples that died. Above him on he cross it read, 'king of the jews." Isreal was always going back and forth with God's wrath and God's favor. He has compassion and empathy for Israel. He said it is the apple of his eye. It is I believe where he will return to take Christians to heaven. We are supposed stand with Isreal. I believe maybe someone can tell it better than I can. There are Christian books on this and can explain it better and you can google and find something. We have scrolls and manuscripts ect. Just don't believe "people ask" they make up stuff and say one thing and then say a different thing. It's not based on research. You can't use them in term papers and resources because they aren't and are not always correct on any subject.

Some jews believe they are what they say they are as in good or bad. Good intentions are still very misleading. We are not good or righteous on our own. When we loose sight of Jesus then we create our own standards and it becomes mess because we aren't comparing it to God. Kind of like works save you, but really Jesus saved us and therefore, out of our new life in christ becomes actions and works.
