Why do feel we have to market salvation as free? What are we really appealing to in a man?

I think what you mean is some are still sucking the milk knowledge of the gospel and have not moved on to the meat of the word of righteousness.
Not at all. The milk described by Paul is basically the salvation experience. They just are happy they’re saved, that’s it.

It’s not “the word of righteousness” but obeying the living God that is the meat. This keeping the teaching of Jesus which leads a man into truth is meaty.
As necessary as it is that believers do that, that in no way means we are to stop rejoicing in and remembering the free gift that we have received and praising God for it.
The milk of the Word. Like children at Christmas….happy about what they got.
Peter says the person who does that is signified by the very lack of obedience you rail against.
Where?Maybe I don’t understand what you mean. Gratefulnessfir salvation doesn’t lead to obedience. Giving children presents doesn’t make them submissive.

Romans 2:4
4Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you to repentance?

Where?Maybe I don’t understand what you mean.
Here:

2 Peter 2:9
9But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

Peter says the person who lives in disobedience, lacking the traits of the Spirit, has forgotten about the free gift of redemption he has received. That contradicts your claim that thinking about and rejoicing in the free gift has no value toward righteous obedience.

It’s not “the word of righteousness” but obeying the living God that is the meat. This keeping the teaching of Jesus which leads a man into truth is meaty.
Here's where is says the meat of the word is the word about righteousness (right living):

Hebrews 5:14
14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.

The meat of the word is truth, but it is not intellectual, theological facts and knowledge. It's knowledge of righteous living in the distinguishing good from evil.

And so that's why I say perhaps what you should be railing against is that many Christians don't move on to the word the right living, the meat of the word, not railing against enjoying the milk knowledge of the free gift of salvation we have received. I'm showing you an abundance of scripture that shows us to always remember and rejoice in the free gift we have received.

They just are happy they’re saved, that’s it.

Google is your friend
Ah, yes. Here it is. Thank you Professor Google, lol.

Luke 10:39-42
39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message. 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”

41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. 42But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.

I see Martha in what you're saying. But Jesus says Mary has chosen good/better thing and it will not be taken away from her. Your doctrine seems busy about taking away the good part, looking down on your fellow brothers and sisters. I see the Pharisee in your doctrine, not the tax collector:

Luke 18:11
11The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the other men—swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.

Your doctrine belongs to The First Church of the 'I'm Not Like Other Men'. Yuck!

Ah yes, the typical American insult in a discussion. Just call someone else a nasty name.

If someone wants to really understand the truth to include God and his ways, there’s a couple of assumptions they make. One is, of course, that there is a truth and it can be known and understood. Two, they assume it is thee most logical of positions. That is, the truth is solid and understanding it provides a kind of confidence that needs not personally insult any opposition. The truth generates or is accompanied by a distinct character level that recognizes insults but doesn’t insult back. Three, those seek the Truth aren’t afraid to question their own position but search the scriptures to see if these things be so. These kinds of believers are rare.

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Explain what one's service to the gospel has to do with salvation.
