It was bi-metal that gave it away to me. That's how thermocouples work, energy (a flame) heats the bi-metal strip and that generates a dc current, which is used to hold open an electro-mechanical valve. If the flame goes out, you lose the needed voltage to hold the pilot valve open so it closes the valve under spring pressure.

But I have no clue what a quark is. Never heard the term before.
