We are to forgive anyone, however the subject and context of the verse I gave involves two brothers in Christ, which by default mean are two brothers who love and have eternal life abiding in them.

If one of them hates, he is not a brother in Christ.

Finally, we know John is referring to brothers in Christ, because these are instructions to Christians, not people of the world who are lost and do not have the ability to love, which refers to keeping His commandments.

Why would you imagine that people of the world are instructed by apostles of Christ to obey the instructions of Jesus Christ if their lord s Satan?

John continues his instructions to brothers in Christ and contextually refers to “brothers in Christ” in verse 15 —

Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.

Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1 John 3:13-16


How can anyone read the contextual framework surrounding verse 15 and not “see” that John is referring to “brothers in Christ”, or “the brethren”.

John juxtaposes those who walk in darkness-sin against those who walk in the light-God.
He uses alternating verses that apply to only one side or the other.
Those walking in darkness cannot say they have fellowship with God, (v6), and they cannot say they have no sin, (v8), and they cannot say they have never sinned, (v10).
If those who walk in darkness-sin are actually in the light-God, then sin is in God.
That just can't happen.

You're mixing the old and new covenants. Romans was written after Jesus' sacrifice and the giving of the Holy Spirit. Matthew's gospel was written before Jesus' sacrifice and the giving of the Holy Spirit. Because of Jesus' sacrifice, all sins have been forgiven.
