Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:15
- Whoever hates his brother
Whoever = one brother
his brother = another brother
How could you “not see” two different brothers are being mentioned here.
Secondly, this verse involves brothers, not random people.
- Whoever hates his brother
“his”
brother is clearly referring to two “brothers”.
his = a brother
brother = his brother
Finally, we know John is referring
to brothers in Christ, because these are instructions to Christians, not people of the world who are lost and do not have the ability to love, which refers to keeping His commandments.
Why would you imagine that people of the world are instructed by apostles of Christ to obey the instructions of Jesus Christ if their lord s Satan?
Context for 1 John 3:15 —
John is writing to Christians, brothers in Christ —
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. 1 John 3:1-3
John continues his instructions to brothers in Christ and contextually refers to “brothers in Christ” in verse 15 —
Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life,
because we love the brethren. He who
does not love his brother abides in death.
Whoever
hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us.
And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1 John 3:13-16
How can anyone read the contextual framework surrounding verse 15 and not “see” that John is referring to “
brothers in Christ”, or “
the brethren”.
Do you believe
the brethren refers to the unsaved?
