What does the Scriptures state concerning antichrist? What is mere speculation concerning antichrist? Theories of what antichrist is supposed to do.

Appear during the final seven years of the Christian era.
Rule for 3 ½ years as a one who brings peace.
Following the 3 ½ year of peace; he will rule for 3 ½ years as a corrupt evil leader.
He will help the Jewish people to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.
He will reinstate the Mosaic sacrificial system in the temple.
He will destroy the temple in the last 3 ½ years of his corrupt reign.
He will stop the temple sacrifices in Jerusalem in the middle of the 7 years.
He will cause everyone to worship him as God.
He will betray the Jewish people turning from them.
He will begin the battle of Armageddon.
He will persecute the “saints†during a seven year tribulation
He will be Satan in human form.
Miscellaneous other legends including 666.

Not one of those ideas can be directly supported from Scripture. Most of those ideas came from a misinterpretation of Daniel’s seventieth week as a seven year tribulation period.

There are only four actual verses in Scripture which speak directly of antichrist.

I John 2:18-19 “Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. (19) They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.†(NASB)

I John 2:22-23 “Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. (23) Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.â€Â

I John 4:2-3 “By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, (3) and ever spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.â€Â

2 John 7 “For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.â€Â

I John 2:22 and 2 John 7: The definite article (te) appears in the Greek text and is translated in the NASB. Consequently, this is “THE†(te) antichrist. The New American Standard is a little clearer than the King James Version. In the NASB, the definite article (te) is translated. All those persons who deny Jesus are not merely “an†antichrist but are “THE†antichrist!
Furthermore, “you have heard†is not a declaration of a fact.

Who is THE (te) antichrist?

It is the last hour (
John is making this declaration of HIS time.) You have heard that antichrist is coming (addressed to the believers in John’s time.) Even now (John’s time) many antichrists have appeared. They went out from us (John’s time). John used the plural pronoun “they†five times in I John 2:19

1.They went out from us, but
2.they were not really of us;
3.for if they had been of us,
4.they would have remained with us;
5.but they went out, so that it would be shown that
6.they all are not of us.â€Â

1.Antichrist is anyone who denies that Jesus is the Christ.
2.Anyone who denies the Son does not have the Father.
3.Consequently, antichrist denies the Father and the Son.
4.Every “spirit†that does not confess Jesus is not from God and is antichrist.
5.Every spirit who does not confess Jesus is the spirit of antichrist.
6.You have heard that antichrist is coming but is already in the world.
7.Hence the spirit of antichrist existed in John’s time!
8.Many deceivers have gone out into the world.
9.Those deceivers who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh are THE deceivers and THE antichrist.

THE antichrist is anyone who denies that Jesus has come in the flesh and is the Christ.

I John 2:18 and I John 4:3 both declare ‘you have heard, you have heard’. The Holy Spirit speaking through the Apostle John does not state that a specific antichrist is coming. He is declaring that “You have heard†that one is coming! Nor is the Holy Spirit declaring that “the antichrist†is coming in the future! Actually, he is using the same figure of speech, “You have heard,†to deny it.

Consequently, He is declaring, “Church you have a false doctrine. Anyone who denies that Jesus is the Christ or that He has come in the flesh is THE antichrist. “The antichrist†is already in the world during John’s time!

Pseudo-prophets utilizing numerology of Greek and Roman calendars have attempted to decode “666†found in Revelation 13:14. They announce a pope, potentate, king, conqueror or guru as “The antichrist.†The Christian’s battle is a spiritual battle! Satan is a spirit and is fighting spiritual warfare for the souls of men and women. Revelation 18:8-13.

Satan’s real officers are: Nero, Kant, Hume, Spinoza, Freud, Darwin, Voltaire, Paine, Jung, an, Moon and the adherents to the New Age are antichrist. The Bible speaks of “the antichrist†because God sees each person individually. Every person who rejects God’s son Jesus and turning from him is “the†person who has rejected Jesus. Consequently, he or she is “the antichrist.â€Â

Why do people assume that if you think Satan; or "the antichrist†will appear on Earth, you are automatically grouped with "the rapture" and "Left Behind" crew. Any halfway decent Bible scholar knows the entire pre-trib rapture scenario is not Biblical. Painting with a broad brush is condescending and presumptuous. As far as “the antichrist†is concerned, how about we not use the word “antichrist†and cut to the chase; and instead use the lamb-like beast’s actual names.

Revelation 12:9 “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.â€Â

Isaiah 14:12 “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdomsâ€Â

2 Thessalonians 2:3 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.â€Â

Revelation 17: 8 "The beast (lamb-like beast) that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet will be."

Revelation 9:1 “And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.â€Â
11And they (locusts) had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Also, by your definition, how do you account for:

Revelation 13: 3 “And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.â€Â

And:

Revelation 12:9 “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world..â€Â

If he is already here, why is it that over a third of the world’s population is Christian, and does not deny Christ as coming in the flesh? That doesn’t sound like the whole world is deceived to me. Whether your definition of “antichrist†is correct or not, one thing is certain. “One†is coming that will deceive the whole world, and that one is Lucifer. What “name†you decide to call him - the antichrist, that old serpent, the devil, Satan, the dragon, Lucifer, son of perdition, man of sin, morning star, horn power, king of Tyre, adversary, accuser, false prophet, angel of light, angel of the bottomless pit, Beelzebub, deceiver, Abaddon, Apollyon, the beast, little horn, stern-faced king, prince of the power of the air, the false messiah, lawless one, wicked one, destroyer, or Homer Simpson - he’s coming and he will deceiveth the whole world.

PS - As for the title of the thread; no, I don’t believe he’s a man either, because Satan is not a man.

You have inserted '(lamb-like beast)' incorrectly. This would be apparent to you if you would read the preceding verse, Revelation 17:7, as well as all of Revelation Chapter 13. :study

The beast that once was, then was not and is again is in the land of Israel.
It wasnt for about 2000 years but now all the sudden ,there it is.
Jews from all over the world have wonderd after it .Those whos names are not written in the Lambs book of life shall worship the beast if they dont already.

Ofcorse if your name is written in the Lambs book of life, the beast aint no big deal.

ps
The saints in the land of Israel where that beast is shall be deliverd up to the synagogues but I dont think we have to worry about that in the US.
Luke 21;12
But before all these ,they shall lay thier hands on you,and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

Now if I lived in the land of Israel,I probably would consider what is there but since I dont,I should think like most who dont live there. But I dont think that way.

The Beast and the "man of sin," etc. all belong in the first-century, pre-A.D. 70!

John was shown those things which were to SHORTLY take place--the time was THEN near. These statements are found in both the first and the last chapters!

You will NOT understand the Revelation until you put it in its proper historical setting!

And please study 2 Thessalonians in its entirety? The audience relevance must not be overlooked. Those very Thessalonians knew what restrained the man of sin. If they knew that, then they knew HIM! Also, consider the first chapter. THEY and Paul expected to experience rest and to have THEIR enemies punished AT HIS APPEARING. It was those of the that first-century day, pre-A. D. 70 who are the primary participants in these events.

What did Paul's words mean to THOSE very Thessalonians when they read them? We must begin there. It troubles me greatly that so little is ever made of the context of such passages. Everything is TO us and ABOUT us. It is this wrong approach that results in the errors we see today!

Sincerely, Preterist

The Temple of God

John 2:19-22 “Jesus answered, and said to them, “Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up again. (20) Then said the Jews, “Forty and six years was this Temple a building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?†(21) But he spake of the temple of his body.†(22) As soon therefore as he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he thus said unto them; and they believed the Scriptures, and the word which Jesus had said.â€Â

Jesus "temple" rose from the grave in three days as he prophesied.

The following quote suggests that the Temple of God is the corporate body of Christ.

Ephesians 2:19-22 “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners: but citizens with the Saints, and of the household of God. (20) And are built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone, (21) In whom all the building coupled together, growth unto an holy Temple of the Lord. (22) In who ye also are built together to be the habitation of God by the Spirit.â€Â
Through this clause: “ye also are built together to be the habitation of God by the Spirit†in Ephesians we understand I Corinthians 6:19

I Corinthians 6:19 “Know ye not, that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, whom ye have of God? And ye are nor your own.â€Â

Hence, the “temple of God†of which the Scripture speaks is the corporate body of Christ. The corporate body of Christ is composed of the regenerate individual people redeemed through the Holy Spirit.

Here is a list of verses in which the phrase “Temple of God†is found.

Matthew 21:12 refers to the literal material temple that Jesus prophesied would be torn down.

Matthew 21:12 “And Jesus went into the Temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the Temple, and overthrew the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves.â€Â
Matthew 26:61 “And said, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the Temple of God, and build it in three days.â€Â

The following verses declare and confirm that the Temple of God is corporate body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 “Know he not that ye are the Temple of God. (17) If any man destroy the Temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the Temple of God is holy, which ye are.â€Â
2 Corinthians 6:16 “And what agreement hath the Temple of God with idols? For ye are the Temple of the living God: as God hath said, ‘I dwell among them, and walk there; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.â€Â

The Scriptures which I have quoted above clearly indicate that the corporate body of Christ is the Temple of God. Hence, it is apparent and not open to interpretation that the corporate body of Christ is the Temple of God.

The Revelation in which John records his vision is in figurative language. We find two verses speaking of the “temple of God†in Revelation.

Revelation 11:1 “Then was given me a reed like unto a rod, and the Angel stood by, saying, ‘Rise and mete the Temple of God, and the Altar, and them that worship therein.â€Â
Revelation 11:19 “Then the Temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in the Temple the Ark of his covenant; and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and earthquake, and much hail.â€Â

The verses I have quoted are ALL of the verses using the phrase “temple of God.â€Â

The accounts in Revelation locate the temple of God in the heavenlies and corresponds to Ezekiel’s description.

Ezekiel 43:7 “Which said unto me, ‘Son of man this place is my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, whereas I will dwell among the children of Israel forever, and the house of Israel shall no more defile mine holy Name, neither they, nor their kings in their high places.â€Â
The Scriptures clearly indicate that God does not dwell in buildings made with hands.

Acts 17:24 “God that hath made the world, and all things that are therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands.â€Â

Any future literal physical temple built with hands would be desolate before its creation.

Hebrews 8:1 “Now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum, that we have such an High Priest, that sitteth at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heavens. (2) And is a minister of the Sanctuary, and of the true Tabernacle which the Lord pitched, and not man.â€Â

Now we can begin to understand the “man of sin†found in 2 Thessalonians.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a departing first, and that man of sin be disclosed, even the son of perdition. (4) Which is an adversary, and exalteth himself against all that is called God, or that is worshipped: so that he doth sit as God in the Temple of God, showing himself that he is God.â€Â

The “man of sin†will “exalteth himself against all that is called God.â€Â

John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and that Word was with God, and that Word was God.â€Â

Scripture indicates that the “Temple of God†which exists in the Christian era is the human heart.

Consequently, "he" that takes his seat in the human heart is not a human being but a spirit, the same "spirit of antichrist" mentioned in 1st and 2nd John.

It is much easier to detect Antichrists than “the son of perdition.â€Â

Antichrist “denies that Jesus is the Christ;†he “denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father.†“…every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God…†“…those who do not acknowledge that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is THE deceiver and the antichrist.â€Â

Judas Iscariot was described as “the son of perdition†and was among the most trusted disciples. “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first…â€Â

Apparently, “that man of sin†is a spirit in persons within the church “which is an adversary, and exalteth himself against all that is called God, or that is worshipped: so that he doth sit as God in the Temple of God, showing himself that he is God.â€Â

Who is the “man of sin†if it isn't Satan?

I Timothy 4: 1-2 “Now the Spirit speaketh evidently, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, and shall give heed unto spirits of error, and doctrines of devils. (2) Which speak lies through hypocrisy, and have their consciences burned with an hot iron.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time will come when they will not suffer wholesome doctrine: but having their ears itching, shall after their own lusts get them an heap of teachers. (4) And shall turn their ears from the truth, and shall be given unto fables.â€Â

It is currently fashionable to suggest that the rebuilding a physical “temple of God†on the temple mount in Jerusalem is scriptural. To believe so would require Christians to believe that the finished work of redemption of Jesus Christ is incomplete nd unfinished.

Jesus gave the Pharisees the following warning.

Mark 7:13 “Making the word of God of none authority, by your tradition which ye have ordained; and ye do many such things.â€Â

Hebrews 8:13 “In that he saith a New Testament, he hath abrogated the old: now that which is disannulled and waxed old, is ready to vanish away.â€Â

Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth, to the Jew first and also to the Grecian.â€Â

the antichrist spirit became incarnate about 400-500 a.d. for the book of revelations speaks of the antichrist as being given a crown and only one man in all christiandom wears a crown, the bishop of rome-the pope

If the beast is the Antichrist, then you are wrong.

Revelation 13:18

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

He is "called" a "MAN", and he may look like a man, talk like a man, and act like a man; but the Scriptures are VERY CLEAR to who this "MAN" actually is - Lucifer, the great dragon, that old serpent, the devil, Satan, THE MAN that made the earth to tremble, THE MAN of sin. The Bible is very clear on this, there is no need to look elsewhere.

Scripture is Clear.
antichrist was a first century spirit that affected MANY, not a 21st century singular Despot.

Any attempt to conflate the Beast of Revelation and Paul's Man of Sin with antichrist of 1 & 2 John is without scriptural merit and rests only on baseless speculation and previously held bias.

OK, What of those men?

No I didn't see 1 & 2 John quoted anywhere, which is why i posted what I posted.

1 & 2 John contain the Bible's ONLY teaching on antichrist.

Whatever the man or men in Isaiah 14 and 2 Thess are, they are not antichrist because they fail to meet the specifications for antichrist set out in 1 & 2 John.

The 'man' in Isaiah 14 is a personified Babylon circa 539BC.
The 'man' in 2 Thessalonians is a personified Zealot Israel circa 70AD.

So we should be looking for another Virgin Birth?
Another Crusifixion?

Is Christ's cross work merely a forshadow of some future, greater redemption from sin?

As long as you first understand what originally hath been, it doesn't hurt to look for current parallels. But don't make the mistake of vainly thinking Isaiah 14 or 2 Thessalonians are directly addressing our current era.

1. The Anti-Christ will be a man - Daniel 7:24-25

2. He will confirm a covenant for 7 years - Daniel 9:27

The Anti-Christ will strengthen a covenant for a 7 year time span. Now this could be an existing covenant (like the Jerusalem Covenant) or a new covenant drawn up at that time.

3. He will rise among 10 kings - Daniel 7:8

4. This 10 nation union will be a revived Holy Roman Empire - Daniel 2:44

5. He will uproot 3 kings from the original 10 kings to gain political power - Daniel 7:8

6. His 10 nation union will merge into a world government which he will dominate - Revelations 13:1-2

Now this also, could refer to several things. First, the 10 nations could merge into an existing world government or a new world government.

7. He will ascend to power on a platform of peace. By peace, he will destroy many - Daniel 8:25

8. He will be promoted and exalted by a miracle working religious partner (false prophet) - Revelations 13:11-12

9. He was, and is not, and yet is - Revelations 17:8

More than likely this is referring to political power. The antichrist will have ruled, but then be taken out of power. Only to rise back up again to power as the head of the One World Government.

10. The world government over which he rules will be a red (communistic or socialistic) government - Revelations 17:14

11. The antichrist will be preceded by 7 kings or rulers. He will be the 8th king. He will also be "of" the 7 - Revelations 17:11

Now this scripture has many different ways it can be viewed. The word "goeth" in the scripture is 5217 hupago (hoop-ag'-o); from 5259 and 71; to lead (oneself) under, i.e. withdraw or retire (as if sinking out of sight), literally or figuratively: KJV-- depart, get hence, go (a-) way.

So we see that he will withdraw or retire from sight. But will rise back up again to power. Now this could be taken as to mean 7 kings. Or this could be taken as 7 World Governments that have ruled. So far there have been 6. 1. Egypt. 2. Assyria. 3. Babylon. 4. Medo-Persia. 5. Greece. 6. Rome

12. He will have a mouth speaking great things. Very boastful - Daniel 7:8

13. His look will be more stout than his fellows - Daniel 7:20

The word "stout" means 7227 rab (rab); by contracted from 7231; abundant (in quantity, size, age, number, rank, quality): KJV-- (in) abound (-undance, -ant, -antly), captain, elder, enough, exceedingly, full, great (-ly, man, one), increase, long (enough, [time]), (do, have) many (-ifold, things, a time), ([ship-]) master, mighty, more, (too, very) much, multiply (-tude), officer, often [-times], plenteous, populous, prince, process [of time], suffice (-lent). So this can have several meanings. It could mean one of the following: the antichrist will be larger in size than everybody else, will be older than everybody else, will have more of a "following" than anybody else, is a higher military or political rank than anybody else, or is more qualified than anybody else. What ever this verse is speaking about, it is obvious when you look at him.

14. He will have a fierce countenance - Daniel 8:23

15. He will understand puzzling things - Daniel 8:23

16. He will cause craft to prosper - Daniel 8:25

It is interesting to note the definition of the word "craft" . It is 4820 mirmah (meer-maw'); from 7411 in the sense of deceiving; fraud: KJV-- craft, deceit (-ful, -fully), false, feigned, guile, subtilly, treachery. No wonder, for the Bible says that he is the father of lies. So his policy or his success will make it possible for his deception of the world to prosper. God said that if you do not believe the truth, that he would send strong delusion that you should believe a lie.

17. He apparently assumes world dominating power 3 1/2 years after he confirms the covenant. He then will continue to reign for 42 months - Revelations 13:5

18. The Abomination of Desolation is the event that signals the beginning of this final 42 months - Daniel 9:27

It is interesting to note, that many scholars believe that at the Abomination of Desolation is when Revelations 12:7-10 occurs. At which point the Antichrist becomes "possessed" by Satan himself and then forces the Mark or death upon everybody.

19. He opposes God - 2 Thessalonians 2:4

20. He will speak marvellous things against the God of gods - Daniel 11:36

21. He will exalt himself above all that is called God - 2 Thessalonians 2:4

24. He will take away the daily sacrifices from the temple - Daniel 11:31

25. He will plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain - Daniel 11:45

The Antichrist will setup small "fortifications" in between the sea and Jerusalem, to help keep control over things in distant areas away from the main offices.

26. He will have power to make war with the saints and to overcome them - Revelations 13:7

27. He will continue this war with the saints for 3 1/2 years - Daniel 7:21, 25

28. This time of Great Tribulation is launched upon the Earth by the antichrist at the Abomination of Desolation. - Matthew 24:15,21.

Up until this time, it would seem that he is a man of peace and not war. But now he shows his true colors. Perhaps is possessed by Satan himself at this point as well. Which would account for the false front being dropped at this time.

29. During this time, the antichrist will scatter the power of the holy people - Daniel 12:7

30. He will rule a mighty and strong kingdom - Daniel 7:7

31. He was given power over all kindreds, tongues and nations - Revelations 13:7

32. His kingdom will devour the whole earth - Daniel 7:23

35. He will give great honor to the God of forces, with gold, silver, jewels, etc - Daniel 11:38

36. He will prosper in everything that he does - Daniel 8:24

37. He will not regard the God of his fathers - Daniel 11:37

38. He will not regard the desire of women - Daniel 11:37

It is interesting to note here that most people think that he will be a homosexual, which could be. But rather I think that he will place limitations upon children being born. Similar to what is being done in China now. Why? Because it is the natural desire of a woman, that God has given to them, to be a mother. By not regarding this natural desire, he would cause a "forced" limit on the amount of children a woman was "allowed" to have.

39. The mark of the beast will be the amount of his name - Revelations 14:11

40. All that dwell upon the Earth will worship him, except those who's names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life - Revelations 15:2

41. He will have an image made after him - Revelations 15:2

This could also be in reference to his kingdom's logo or insignia.

42. His coming will be after the workings of Satan - 2 Thessalonians 2:8

43. He will fight against Jesus Christ at Armageddon - Revelations 17:14

44. He will stand against the Prince of princes - Daniel 8:25

45. The Lord will consume him with the spirit of his mouth (which is the Word of God) - 2 Thessalonians 2:8
