Chapter 25 I find it interesting that a guilty man of a crime had to face a certain number of lashes to meet the crime, but no more because it would degrade a brother.

There was great importance in Israel to carry on the family name if a husband died being without a son.

A wife has to be very careful when trying to rescue her husband from a fight with another man.

For selling and buying, there had to be honest weights for each.

King David took care of Amalek, who was a thorn in the side of Israel. King David defeated them.

I believe there's more to it than that, but like I said, it would derail the thread to go into it in detail. I think I'll wait til Deborah13 starts her new thread before I say more. I hope you'll take part there too.

The TOG
It seems stalled over there right now.

If you can get it going again with this line of thought maybe I'll find a place to jump in.

The point I think being that the woman becomes defiled by remarrying, not by simply being divorced. The husband who sends her away does what Jesus says divorce does....it causes the person you divorce to commit adultery. Whether God gave room for that in the first covenant or not, it's still adultery.

Yes, no fair grabbing on to just any available 'handle' to end the fight.

That gives the true meaning to 'hitting below the belt'.

Chapter 25
Deu 25:17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;
Deu 25:18 How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.
Deu 25:19 Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.

God will have vengeance on them who slayed the innocent, the weak, whether that weakness was caused by age or because they are unable to defend themselves, such as a mother protecting her children from their attack. The Amalek were cowards and lacked morals that they would do this thing.

Look at how God's welfare system works:

"19 “When you reap your harvest in your field and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow, in order that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.20 When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow.

21 “When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow." (Deuteronomy 24:19-21 NASB)

What a good plan. Able bodied people work for what they receive.

Chapter 26 There is a holy theme that runs thru the Bible and our response to our generous Almighty God. If we are to receive from His mighty "outstretched Arm", we must demonstrate to Him our gratitude for what He has done. The origin of all things good is Jehovah our God, not us! So that we demonstrate our thankfulness to Yahweh, we return a portion (first fruits) to Him and to those He sees as needy, and depend upon Jehovah our God for our very lives.

Not only do we show our thankfulness to Yahweh for our dependance on Him, but we show to the world that all we have and obtain in the future is the work and blessing of the great Almighty God that we serve....IN GOD WE TRUST!

Deu 27:1 And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandments which I command you this day.
Deu 27:2 And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaister them with plaister:
Deu 27:3 And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over, that thou mayest go in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, a land that floweth with milk and honey; as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee.
Deu 27:4 Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount Ebal, and thou shalt plaister them with plaister.
Deu 27:5 And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
Deu 27:6 Thou shalt build the altar of the LORD thy God of whole stones: and thou shalt offer burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD thy God:
Deu 27:7 And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and shalt eat there, and rejoice before the LORD thy God.

Chapter 27
Deu 27:15 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.
Jer 23:23 Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?
Jer 23:24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

Eph 1:19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
Eph 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
Eph 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Eph 1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
Eph 1:23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

This pictures an interesting form of communication to me. Half of the Tribes of Israel would be on Mt. Gerizim to bless the people, and the other half on Mt. Ebal to pronounce curses.

In my study of the commentary by Jamison, Fausset, & Brown, my favorite, it gave me this picture: The levitical Priests were in the valley between the two mounts around the Ark, they would face the Tribes on Mt. Gerizim and shout "Blessed is the man who does not move his neighbor's landmark", and then they would turn and face the Tribes on Mt. Ebal and shout "Cursed is the man who moves his neighbors landmark". At the end of each statement, all would agree with "amen" meaning "so be it."

The Law would be inscribed on uncut large stones placed on Mt. Ebal, that were whitewashed with lime so that the letters could be seen.

It's a shame that Israel received more curses than blessings as history reveals.

May I never become "stiffnecked" or rebellious toward the commands of my God Jehovah or His Son, Jesus the Christ.

Nice explanation of what is going on here. The historical explanations give insight into the verses.
Thanks Chopper. :)

Chapter 28 For some reason I am terribly grieved while reading this Chapter because of the great and wonderful heart of Jehovah our Elohim in His abundant provision for His people, knowing that they refused to follow His Statues and Commandments. They in turn received His curses and didn't wake up.

Chapter 29 There appears to be two Covenants, one at Mt. Sinai and one at Moab. "Many interpreters", according to Dr. John MacArthur, favor this Covenant as a renewal of the Sinai Covenant. But in V.1 the word "besides" which means "in addition to" the previous Covenant explains Dr. MacArthur.

It was this Covenant that was meant to change Israel's heart. Instead of assigning land, this Covenant was made with the intent that Israel would submit with all their heart to obey God's rules.

NOTE: In my posts you will see "Jehovah our Elohim" instead of the "Lord our God" because I have gone back to using my "Newberry Reference Edition" of the KJV. It is out of print. I purchased almost the last edition. It has symbols telling me the presence or absence of the Hebrew Articles, Divine titles distinguished, and just a whole lot of symbols that explain Hebrew and Greek meaning.

V.29 reveals an important perspective for all of us. There are "secret things that belong unto Jehovah our Elohim". The revealed things should prompt obedience to God so that the secret things will become apparent.

Chapter 30 Here we have a promise from Jehovah our Elohim that if Israel would return to obeying Him, He would gather them from the places of captivity, circumcise their heart to love anf follow Him.

V.12 makes it real simple, "Hear it and do it"

V. 19 & 20 are a famous portion of God's Word for all people in all generations. "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: that thou mayest love Jehovah thy Elohim and that thou mayest obey His voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto Him: for HE is thy life, and the length of thy days".

And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail (Deu. 28:13 ESV)
I don't know how many times I've heard Christians claim that this promise is for them. It seems that many think that all Christians should automatically be the head and not the tail, just because they are Christians. But I have not once heard a preacher read that verse in it's proper context. It starts by saying...

And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today (Deu. 28:1 ESV)

If you keep the commandments, then you shall be the head. The curses for not obeying the commandments start in verse 15. One of them is being the tail and your enemies being the head (v. 44). We are so quick to take all of God's promises and demand them for ourselves, but we forget that sometimes God wants something in return. Many of God's promises are unconditional, but not all of them are.

Sorry if I'm a couple of chapters late, but the misapplication of that verse bothers me.

The TOG

Misapplication or different? We are all one in Him... I dont see a division from Adam to The TOG...We all look to the Cross of Christ some forward some back... those about 2000 years ago straight out... :)
